River Kennet - nr. Thatcham ;)

1830 - 2330

Mainly overcast and quite breezey. AT54ºF, WT52ºF and both rising. Positively balmy compared to last Monday evening, despite the wind!

4 Barbel: 10lb 7oz, 9lb 5oz, 7lb 4oz, 5lb 15oz

Cracking evening in a swim not a million miles from where John, Chris & Steve have been in the last 72 hours! :P 9lber first cast - all be it ¾hr after casting out and the double right at the end of the session. Biggest barbel for 3 years. All on hair-rigged halibuts.

9lb 5oz

I said to myself 'what is the right strategy on a bright sunny day like this?' Now I know! And we don't hate you, of course!! (Can't get the smilies to work)

Not quite hatred but sort of bordering on intense dislike, a few more blogs like that might tip me over the edge though ;) . Well done again Chris, I have a horrible feeling that I may have walked past these fish too on Sunday.

Right place - and probably more importantly - right time. Do tend to get most of my bigger barbel in the dark theses days. If you look back through my blog - its the only time I seriously fish for them on the lead....

Yes I've noticed that for a while. I've caught enough of them on the float now to realise that trotting is likely to result in smaller fish and while I'm fishing during the day feeding and tempting them is going to take time (and sometimes doesn't work). It's still a method that I enjoy above all else and the smaller ones are still good fun so I'm not tempted yet to pitch up in darkness.

Agreed, Rusty barbel on the pin are a whole lot of fun - though my biggest float caught is 'only' 8lb - a fish that caused me a very merry dance a few years back!!! Summer/autumn eveings by the river have there own attractions however - been privileged to see barn owls on 2 parts of the Kennet this summer. I usually stop after the clocks go back as it does mean arriving and setting up in the dark. If I do (as in this week) it will be to swims I know really well - not just the bank but somewhere I know I'll be able to cast to in the dark (so usually near bank swims)....
