No holiday snaps, just fishing and eating

River Kennet, Speen Moors, Monday 1st October 2012

Eager to continue the chubbing theme I thought I‘d have a good crack at the Kelly Kettle swim today. It’s on my usual circuit at this venue but I don’t often sit it out there for any length of time, today though a concerted effort was in order. Two loaves of bread were stashed in the airing cupboard overnight and in the morning they were suitably dried out for bread mash making.

I won’t dwell on the fishing too much because you’ve read most of this before but the quiver tipping flake method produced a PB chub for this venue at 4lb 10z, a perfect looking fish at that;

I also managed another chub of 3lb 4oz and a tiddler at about a pound, a pic of the larger one;

So although rivers and swims change over the years some places remain as holding spots, at least this one has for two decades. I’ve trotted maggot through here on numerous occasions and caught nothing but drop in some bread flake and the fish suddenly appear.

On the way home I decided to stop by Barton Court to see how the wet summer has helped it along. Good news, a party of anglers reported lots of grayling to “about 2lb” (that’s a pound then) and the river looked pretty healthy. Not quite as full as I’d hoped but not too bad for the end of summer;

The evening entertainment was well worth the wait. Steve and I play Top Trumps Dinner and I trounced him last Saturday when he was barbel fishing on the Thames, he played “a cup of tea and not much else” for dinner. I, on the other hand, was perusing the menu in the Honiton Wine Bar and came up with a starter of seared scallops and black pudding, a main course of sea bass with a bottle of Chablis to help it all down. Game over.

His efforts in tonight’s re-match were admirable, roast chicken with stuffing and all the trimmings would normally win the game but he lost points on two counts. Firstly he claimed that he was cooking it for Alex and it’d be ready as she walked through the door, clearly this was untrue. Secondly he turned over a chocolate pudding and custard for afters but quickly retracted it so again the Cheating Rule 36 applied.

I played the game with a straight bat as usual and won with the following recipe. It actually looked something like the picture;

Ok ok next time I’ll use corn....but if I blank there’ll be a Sun exposé of the CPAAS (Chris Plumb Angling Advisory Service).

PS: I’ll need a cane rod though.
