More grayling...and some roach.
River Lambourn, Saturday 10th November 2012
A short session on the Lambourn with Steve, we only fished from 10:00am to 3:00pm but in that time we tried most of the free section. We bumped into Mr Plumb at Shaw who was bemoaning the fact that he’d left his chest waders at home, not normally a problem on this river but the level was up five or six inches so his thigh waders were in danger of not coping…we offered sympathy….and then sniggered a lot when he’d left.
We caught our usual morning ration of grayling and trout but it was in the afternoon when things became interesting. The water was crystal clear and it was while I was on my way to a particular swim that I noticed a shoal of roach holed up in some slack water. A few of them looked to be getting on for a pound so I spent most of my time there trying to pick out the larger ones and avoid the infuriating minnows.
The minnows were too quick but I did manage a couple of reasonable roach, the first one was netted although I probably could’ve swung it in;
The better specimens eluded me but it was nice to know that they do exist in that river and a nice change from grayling. The day was a good pre-cursor to Wednesday’s Barton Court trip, the forecast is for mild, overcast weather and the Kennet will be flowing very healthily, I’m really looking forward to it.
