Hi all. purchased a 5m whip today from a car boot for £3.00, its telescopic, with an eye ring at the top. what i would like to know, is how i set it up, with what poundage line and hook length, and do i just tie line straight to the eye ring. also, would i just use normal pole floats for the location. I have never used one, and would like to give it a go on the canal i fish regulary. many thanks and regards smac

I think you should take notice of what has been said about the margins. very good advice. now i would think along the lines that you have 2 weeks now. get to your tackle shop, but think what method are you going to fish., some one said swet corn which is a great idea. catches most things, and might keep you pottering along and keeping your net full while others wait for the big one.. anyway, i would take most baits with you, maggots, sweetcorn, casters, boilies, sweet corn, bread, if they have not put a ban on you visiting the venue, i then would start to feed the margins, for the next couple of weeks. every other day if you can. get them used to what your going to fish, and hopely they will come looking on the day you fish,, how many rods you fishing as a matter of thought. smac

Maybe they did, i agree with healthy eating for children and all. I come froma background of unemploymemnt, from the north east where unemployment was at a high and over 3 mill unemployed. limited money on benefit, you buy the best you can for your children just to feed them, economy packs, 20 burgers for a 2 pound that sort of thing. half our children dont know good food, and be suddenly told at school this is what your going to eat, no way. they rebel, teens rebel, on top of that, they really dont know whats good for them. unless you come from the south, with your family in good jobs, and you are brought up on the nicer things in life. i know the north south devide, have lived both sides for 20 years, 15 in the north and 5 in the south. i live in london and am doning better than i ever could if i went north again. at least they are eating fish and not a burger, got to be better. i dilever battered cod to nursing homes every week.. which will be fried for them. is that also bad, should we start crying out to stop our parents from eating what our children are eating. smac

I fish a canal, which has next to no current. roach can take sweet corn no problem, getting all sizes on it, i must admit, you have to give the bite a little time, no so easy on a river i know. genrally have to go on the third bob of the float. smac

Thats totaly true about the environment fish come from. Im a manager of a fish mongers selling over 70 types of fish from around the world. 67 types are sea fish and 3 types are fresh water. My biggest seeler is a fresh water fished called tilapia, which is now farmed all over the world, i sell around a 100 boxes a week, containig 10 fish to a box. if i buy from its origins, which is africa, i cant sell it. if i buy from thailand, i can sell all i can get. fresh water fish tastes like the river it comes from. smac

Im catching gudgeon every day, i fish the grand union week days. and sometimes you think you got a nice roach, till it pops its head up, but i would catch them all day long on light gear. sometimes i think the odd one is on steroids lol. as for my preff, i dont really have one. i will sit from dawn to dusk catching skimmers, roach, perch, of any size. smac

throw the poachers in, it will get the police out quicker than you calling because they are stealling fish lol

They will only say they cant read. I see it everyday where they take a liberty, they say they can read. they did not see the sign. wont tell you what the sign is lol, thats another can of worms as they say. i will leave that topic for non fishing chat one day, smac

Just a thought on this subject and another post i was reading last week, about the EA no longer doing night visits to waters. I know we all pay are licenses and are happy to do so. and the EA have had cuts in there budget from what i can gather. My point is, when someone is prosecuted, where do the fines go, do they go to the EA or to the state. I was thinking that maybe there would be a motivation, to get out and catch these people, and have them fined and put that revenue back to the EA and visit waters, it would be a snowball effect, as more where caught, more EA people could be employed to visit. bit like the speed cameras paying for themselfs, i live in london, and so many polish and the likes fish everyday, and take fish from the waters, its become a problem to an extent. so catching these would bring in revenue, so better protection for all. i would like to hear your views smac

I have been a shop manager for 10 years and have had many staff. and i cant speek on the stats mentioned, but as someone said its a case of oppertunity. take away the oppertunity, and you take away the chance for some one to be disshonest. i have not had disshonest staff, because i took away the oppertunity through regular checks. but gave them another oppertunity instead, and it works. well up to now. For example, you have a smoker who has run out of fags, day before payday, but his craving is bad. whats he likely to do, he will be thinking his whole shift, how he can get away with it, to get a packet, his mind wont really be on the job, but he needs his fags. so i allow all my staff to sub money from wages, or a packet of fags, he now does not need to take a packet. i gave him another oppertunity, now he has his fags, and most of all, his mind on the job. smac
