  1. further to the largemouth bass thread, ive done a bit of research as to the species available in the dams in cyprus, its well worth taking a rod, these species listed were as per 1989, some things have changed slightely due to people transferring species from dam to dam etc, and certainly, there are a few dams containing trout that are not listed here. the catfish listed are not the 'wells' variety uk is familiar with, but are a full tailed version. Prodhromos trout, mosquito fish Palekhori trout, mosquito fish Kalopanayiotis trout, mosquito fish Xyliatos trout, mosquito fish Lefkara trout, carp, roach, bleak, grey mullet, mosquito fish, eel, crayfish Kafizes trout, carp, mosquito fish Lefka trout, eel, carp, black bass, roach, perch, mosquito fish Lymbia carp, catfish, black bass, perch tilapia, eel, mosquito fish, crayfish Athalassa carp, goldfish, tilapia, mosquito fish, catfish, eel, crayfish Kouris roach, pike-perch, carp, mosquito fish Dhypotamos tench, mosquito fish Kalavasos carp, black bass, mosquito fish Ayia Marina carp, mosquito fish Evretou Tilapia, carp, mosquito fish Polemidhia carp, catfish, eel, perch, bass, mosquito fish, roach Pomos carp, mosquito fish Mavrokolymbos carp, roach, mosquito fish Argaka carp, roach, mosquito fish Yermasoyia carp, roach, bass, bleak, grey mullet, silver bream, perch, mosquito fish Asprokremmos carp, bass, mosquito fish Akhna carp, Tilapia, tench, mosquito fish, crayfish
  2. which dam did you get this one in, and on what bait ?? did you know there are also double figure mullet in yermasoyia dam, they show occasionally on bread, they are a sea fish that can live in fresh water, and ive seen a double caught from there, hell of a fish, massive tail. they were stocked in there in the 70's i think. maybe the 60's.
  3. none in UK as far as i know but if you want to fish for them but cant be bothered to go stateside then take a rod with you next time you go to cyprus, the dams over there are stocked with them and the sport is tremendous, livebait, spinning or floatfished worm bring the best results. yermasoyia dam used to be crammed with them, people caught doubles figure ones in the 80's there, there are some monsters.
  4. a couple of free waters near where i live in sleaford in lincolnshire, both still waters, im about 50 mins east of nottingham. you are welcome to come along one day when the weather picks up.
  5. we cant complain too much about the cost anyway, 20 odd quid is good value for the year, although i do think the rod licence should last for 1 calendar year after it was purchased.
  6. not too many obstructions, the river in its swollen state is only about 7 metres across. come on guys, i need more advice on the deep blue/chocolate water factor !!
  7. a small river near to my home is very swollen at the moment, with various tributaries entering copious amounts of water to lift the depth and width of this river to perhaps 3 times its normal. what effect does the colouration of the water have on the fishing potential. today i fished just 5 yards upstream of a tributary that entered chocolate coloured water into the river, where i was fishing was almost a deep blue/green colouration, but slightly downstream was the chocolate inwash which had coloured all of the river downstream of that point with the brown thick colouring. i caught some fish where i was fishing and had a few bites that i missed, but i did not let the float enter the chocolate water.... was i right in doing this? the fish i caught were either dace or small chub. how do i tell the difference, as they are a fish i dont catch often i was not sure what they were, they only went up to about 4oz (the ones that i caught did anyway). i was using single or double maggot on a size 18. what other baits would have given me a better advantage, depending on what the fish were of course. i presume i was fishing about 3/4 depth, was this the right thing to do? sorry about all of the questions, cheers in anticipation of some solid advice.
  8. i catch a lot of pike and looked at it and thought 14lb-16lb without looking at anyone elses guess, but hey, i might be wrong.
  9. i thread the line through one hole, then through the bubble itself, then through the hole on the other side, replace the bungs and then you have a float that holds firm on the line without any shot or swivels etc. great for floating crust, squeeze a bit of well moulded bread paste onto the float, it attracts the fish (mullet?) and then they will pick up your hook bait about 3 feet away!!
  10. i was hoping the pike would bite her 'snatch' and rip her bikini bottoms off...
  11. its somewhere between 4 and a half and 5 lb id guess..
  12. my pb is 41 secs, its a bit addictive isnt it
  13. hey, i guess you must watch ray mears survival too !!
  14. guess you must be divorced like me then....had the same problem, but i loved my boss (RAF Nursing officer), loved my neighbour, and when in the army loved my subordinate. still..you only live once eh mate.
  15. not sure where you are in the country, but there is no licence required, so long as you dont interfere with other waterway users. the basingstoke canal is absolutely riddled with them, places like ash lock you can see the things climbing up the lock walls.
  16. nice to see that political correctness is running strong in spalding yogi.. ive got some 'love thy neighbour' dvds from the 70's. they are great..
  17. bloody hell...you are more controversial than when i mentioned 'barbed ' trebles for pike ! you will have all of the fellas after you on here. as for the pikeless stillwater, it funny. my local pike water (where only i fish it seems) is teeming with big pike as it used to be a trout lake. crystal clear water, loads of snags, not a deep lake but the size of about 4 football pitches (about 6 acres i guess). i spoke to an old boy there who was throwing a stick in for his dog. 'no pike in here mate' ha was heard to say... 'we stunned them all when it was a trout lake' i ignored the old codger, and went to my usual swim in a wooded area, and in a pleasant hour on a november afternoon, took four doubles to 22lb 7oz. stunned them all my foot !!!
  18. the most knackered fish i have seen after spawning are male tench, they are in a right state, all torn and battered from trying to get near to the eggs through rushes and twigs and snags etc...
  19. if you read the thread then you will see there is no suggestion of not leaving them in peace, just my ignorance about their spawning habits and wanting more info. but i do understand your concern.... but pregnant women turn some blokes on, obviously not you..
  20. do they all spawn at the same time hence making mid feb onwards a complete waste of time for piking?
  21. when ? where in the lakes ? feeding activity during this period ? thanks guys, bit of an open post but should be an informative one as i think that time of year is approaching.
  22. i caught the same 2 lb jack pike 3 days running, it had a mouth defect so was easy to recognise... better than blanking.... )
  23. go to 'pets at home' (the big shop with the green logo) you will get free advice there and some books and booklets will be available. also look on line, there will be articles somewhere, plus the guys on here have steered you in the right direction. best of luck
  24. im about 35 miles north of peterboro, and there are a few reasonable perch venues near to me..
  25. i was fishing in a lake, crystal clear water, windy conditions but got it in a sheltered area. sky was grey cloudy but with blue patches, but it was blowing a gale
