  1. Some good points there I agree a lot of commercials are grossly overstocked but it still doesn't stop the same old pasties being caught over and over again.....but i suppose that is a different issue. I live very close to the Avon so it is a bit of a shame when the close season comes round but that's just the way it is.
  2. I always like to travel as light as possible On a usual session I take Rucksack - containing all my deadbaits, reel, tackle boxes weighing sling, unhooking equipment etc One rod for river & roving tactics Pair of banksticks Landing net Brolly (when necessary) On some river sessions I'll dispense with the banksticks as well.....never take a seat either.
  3. Good point....I suppose they get used to kilos of every pellet/seed under the sun being put in and would struggle without it. I have no problem with the close season myself...I suppose I should think myself lucky as queing for a swim on a river sounds madness!
  4. Indeed.....30lb pike are pretty rare
  5. I totally agree with your comments on stillwaters...if there is waters that needs a break the most it's the small commercials that get hammered every weekend throughout the year.....some of the poor carp in these places look worse for wear.
  6. I tend to agree with you....hardly anyone fishes the rivers around my way, most people are more insterested in catching carp at commercials.
  7. I'm going to try out Cheddar Reservoir for the pike which isn't that far from Bristol....supposed to be good for tench as well. Bathampton AA own a couple of good lakes if your into carp which aren't far from Bristol either....one is at Newton Park in the Bath Spa grounds and the other is at Hunstrete....Newton in the summer is busy but if you can brave the crowds the catching is guaranteed.
  8. I have been cut but that was in my early days of pike fishing....no one told me about the teeth/spines at the back near the gill rakers, I was more bothered about avoiding the business end (mouth)! I suppose if I could find a glove that was thin enough without compromising feel then I may give it a go.

    pike

What methods have you been trying in these lakes....pike in different waters often respond to different baits and live/deads. You've also got to ask the question of how heavily fished the water is.....I've heard that in pressured waters move away from the bank which will require the use of ballooning, drifer floats of beachcasters to get the baits out to where they are.
  10. Never use gloves but prefer to feel my way round the gil cover to the front where you can hold the fish securley without getting cut. Takes a bit of practice but once you've got it sussed there's no need to use gloves.
  11. Cheers for the replies Glad to hear there are some Pike enthusiasts on here.....as always, I'm always looking for advice on methods and new rigs to try out so I'm sure I'll learn a bit on here. Has anyone fished Cheddar reservoir for pike?....Like to do Chew valley but getting on there is pretty difficult as times are restricted so I thought Cheddar may be worth a shot. I also hear that it's a trout fishery which usually means fat pike!
  12. I always use Daiwa Sensor (15lbs BS) in brown and I find it pretty good. I don't fish many lakes that are gin clear though plus the pike I'm after probably aren't as clever/wary as your carp.
  13. Just thought I'd introduce myself as I've just joined up to forum Used to fish quite a bit when I was younger on commercials but gave up for quite a few years.....just got back into it again and am so glad I did. Started again around a couple of years ago fishing pretty much anything from rivers for chub & roach to commercials for the carp and had a fair amount of success as I think my patience had improved since I was younger! For the last 8 months or so though I have ditched the multiple rods & bivvy and specialised 100% in Pike fishing which I really love. So far I've had 5 doubles up to 17lb and numerous fish from river and stillwater. Next goal for myself is breaking the 20lb mark but catching pike of any size is always great so as long as my rods bending I'm happy. Be good to hear from Pikers down south in the Bristol/Bath areas wtih tips for good venues locally. Neil
