  1. I think the last time I fished in a style other than lure fishing was probably last year at Wingham as I've mostly been moving away from this type of fishing..... But with that said Wingham is so special I'm still tempted this year :-). I hope the tench are feeding for everyone this year, it has been a bit of a struggle the last couple if I remember correctly :-(

    Chubbing

When lure fishing for Perch I have found that the rod I use (Rating 0-5g) hasn't got enough back bone to set the hooks when the chub hits the lure, they seem to hit the lure hard I feel the hit and they let go, when I switch to a 5-20g rod when they hit the lure the strength of the rod seem to set the hooks better and it feels like your lure just got hit by a train.

    Chubbing

Congratulations :-). Slightly off topic, have you ever tried fishing for them during the summer with lures? A 5-6lb chub on a lure would be great fun :-)
  4. I use a 6ft 3in rod for this style of fishing, I personally wouldn't go any shorter but depending on the river/canal then I think it would be fine.
  5. What weight lures are you casting with the 20lb braid? I have gone down to 8-10lb to get a much improved casting distance but maybe it doesn't affect it as much as I think it does.
  6. Regarding the using bigger lures for perch statement then yes it is completely true that perch will hit huge lures but in my limited experience I would say that it depends on what you are after if you want to catch a lot of perch (30-40 in a few hours than you need a much smaller spinner as you will get much better hook up ratios with smaller perch and they are more likely to hit it, if you are happy catching a smaller amount and more even ration of jacks to perch than a larger spinner is that way to go.
  7. Hi, I have a similar setup for river fishing for perch. Savage Gear Troutizimo 0-5g Spro Micro Reel 8lb Braid Lures, I generally use mepps as well. Currently I am using the smallest Mepps Red Comet you can get (Size#00) which I think is about 1.5g so maybe a bit light for you setup you are considering unless you go for a much lighter line which I wouldn't recommend. The reason I use such a small spinner is because I'm generally going out to just have fun and catch as many perch as I can and I don't really care about the size :-). Try and get some light wire as well because the canal will probably contain pike and it's not possible to avoid them all the time but try and get a thin/supple wire something like Drennan Soft Strand 10lb which can be knotted onto you snaps and swivels easily, the only problem with it is that it kinks quite easily so you need to be careful when handling it. Let me know how you get one and if you find any good ultra light lures :-)
  8. Hi, I've used frog lures for the first time this season, I have been using spro bronze eye hollow body frogs and found that although the hook up ratio isn't great (maybe 50% at best) they are great fun, it amazin seeing pike launch themselves out lily pads or watching them torpedo across the surface at the lure. Make sure you use strong line as you might be fishing close to lily pads and weed and need strong line to hold the fish, use a long supple wire trace, long because pike quite often miss the lure and you risk them cutting the line if you have a short trace and a supple trace because they will let go of the frog before you can set the hooks if the trace is too inflexible. When you get a bite, don't strike straight away.... This will sometimes result in the lure coming flying back a you :-). Wind down until you feel the fish and then if you feel it strike straight away and hard. If you don't feel it keep twitching the lure as the pike quite often hit the lure and then turn and properly take it. This is where I buy mine from. http://www.thepikeshop.co.uk/lures/frogs Good luck if you give it a go, if you do then you better be quick, I think you will start to struggle with frog lures as we move into Autumn.
  9. Not a great season for me, having just bought a house and having crazy amounts of work on to finish a project at work (7 days a week, 80h+) I haven't been able to fish as much as I hoped. Highlights for this season New PB tench - 10lb 2oz (Wingham Fish-in) Mostly ultra light lure fishing for perch and a lot of fun had but nothing over about 8oz I think in the last couple of weeks I've finally figured out catching chub on lures in the summer, I'm hoping for a few more sunny days to test it all out though First ever pike on top water lures Definitely not a terrible season but it would have been better without work :-)
  10. I Agree! My ones have out lasted my Korum rover bag which was 3 times the price!!
  11. Hi, I have found that dog biscuits do lose the boyancy over time but it is greatly exagerated when drilling into them which allows water to get inside the biscuit quicker, this combined with the weight of the hook means that they sink after a while. To get around this I used to fish with two mixers on the hook which would give me a more time before they sank. Now I would either thread a floating artificial caster/maggot on the hook to negate the weight of the hook (although I'm not sure what this would do to the hooking efficiency) or I would use a pop-up boilie. The approach I would favour out of these would be the pop-up boilie but I would choose one with a similar colour/smell to the mixers if possible (Tiger nut pop-up seems quite good) and cur it down to be shaped more like a mixer. As far as the mixer getting close to the controller, I have experienced this for two reason. The first is that it is just an illusion when fishing at distance and it's difficult to tell how far the mixer is behind the controller so you only see the sideways difference. The second is when using a line which for what ever reason isn't floating, this would cause the line to sink and drag them together. You can buy sprays used for fly fishing which get the line to float better. I would have thought your line for surface fishing would have this property anyway so I would suggest you test it in the margin and watch what is happening. Good luck and hopefully someone the more experienced fishermen can help. Cheers Neil
  12. Like Andrew I don't have an issue with people fishing in any specific way. But my issue I would like to put into 'Room 101' some the lack of respect 'some' anglers show to the lake, area surrounding the lake and the other people using the lake for fishing or other recreational activities.
  13. Sorry to hear about your rod. I lost my current favourite lure this weekend (only about £8 to replace from Poland) and I thought I had a bad weekend! It's not a mid-top end rod but I use a Abu Garcia Vendetta 6ft 5g-20g for that casting range, it's not an amazing rod but definately good value for the price and easily handles all the lure caught chub I've hooked and any pike when I've bothered to fish for them. http://www.harrissportsmail.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18048 Let me know if you want any further information.
  14. I know nothing about the River Yare or fishing for Catfish but I know they have been caught on lures, if the water is clear enough is it worth targeting them with large lures and essentially fishing for a 'follow' to potentially give you a sighting of where they are and then concentrate on that area with baits. Plus you would catch some pike at the same time :-).
  15. I fish for Pike during the summer sometimes and the only time I have had to hold pike upright when releasing them is when the unhooking has been difficult due to deep hooking or a weird hook position. I always carry long wire cutters designed for pike fishing with me so I can cut the hooks and unhook it easily and quickly. Also a landing net designed with a rubber mesh should mean that if a pike spins in the net it is easier to untangle everything and you don't spend 5 minutes untangling the fish and then another few minutes unhooking it will also help keeping it out the water for a much longer time than required. If you are struggling with the hooks rest the fish back in the net in the water and sort out your unhooking tools and have a think how best to unhook it while the fish gets some oxygen back into it.
  16. I spent the day lure fishing for Perch with my new Savage Gear Troutizmo, lost 3-4 perch and a few follows from others and landed 4-5 jacks including one of about 8oz. Looking at the hooks towards the end of the session and realised the hooks were blunt which would explain the perch all coming off! I'll make sure to take a hook sharpener next time and get all the hooks sharp, the river was slightly weird, the big fish seemed to have moved and there was no indication of any fry so I'm guessing the fish either have only just spawned and are still in the spawning grounds or are yet to spawn so it may take a while for it to sort itself out or to find the fish.
  17. Amazing fish, well done Steve and the captor. It is actually bigger in length and girth than the fish I caught but mine was prettier :-). Well done again :-). Maybe an 11 this year? :-)
  18. The carp have just started spawning in Cambridge this week at the lake I've been fishing. The bailif who lied and claimed he caught a 40lb pike claims it was carrying spawn which would mean the pike have probably just spawned as well but I don't think we can take his word with much certainty :-)
  19. Watching the footage and having time to rethink my approach I think in similar conditions I would be trying to intercept single fish while they are moving around. I would probably fix the most efficient rig I could that I would be confident would give me the best chance of a hook up if it was picked up, for me this is a KD or if in heavy weed a Pop-Up Rig and either bait with a small PVA bag or scatter some pellets around. Both the PVA bag and scattered pellets should mean that either the pellets have broken down by the time the bait is found or there is only a mouth full of bait to take and you should hopefully get a pickup. As has already been said though when the conditions get better the tench may feed better again.
  20. A lots more weed than normal, basically the whole lake bed apart from the bars have been covered in weed. Also I think there was less wind than previous years which should have impoved visibility a bit and reduced the undertow.
  21. That was my thought as well, how close does the fish get to the rig/line? I couldn't see the rig when I watched the video.
  22. Thanks guys, I could probably not catch another fish all season and be happy. I'm also really lucky in the I've had 5 new PBs in 4 years (3 different Tench PBs, 1 Perch and 1 Pike). This is in no way reflective of my fishing ability but more so in the amazing fishery Steve has created and the help of the syndicate members that come around and help us every year.
  23. Some slightly different pictures of the Tench. (Steve I've emailed you the raw version of these pictures so you can edit/crop them if you want)
  24. lol thanks, that was actually Steve that let out that shout of joy.... it scared all the fish out of my swim for the rest of the weekend!! ;-) (This is my story and I'm sticking to it ;-))
  25. Thanks Steve, I'm sure the pictures are great. I'm just happy someone was around a willing to come over and take some pictures of an special fish for me. I've always had a dream of a double figure tench in the back of my head and had started doing research over the last year to find places where I would have a chance of one but to catch one at Wingham made it even more special :-). Thanks again Steve.
