  1. I might buy a ZT Pro hook tyer. I've tried the matchman and can't do it, I can't tie spade hooks manually either but I do want to use them. Problem is once I've made dozens of hooklengths I'll need to pop them in a small wallet of some sort - but no, I have to buy a fooking hooklength storage system which isn't going to fit in my creel. Where have all these angling 'systems' come from?
  2. Thanks a lot for that John, levels are low at the moment so I'm hoping for rain in the next few weeks otherwise it'll be a lot of walking searching for the deeper holes. Steve - I'll be fishing on day tickets, a couple of days to begin with (staying in a nearby B& and I'll see how it goes after that. Fully intend to join LAA next season though
  3. With the end of the season looming I’m in the fortunate position of being able to take a month off work from 20th Feb to 20th March. As with last year I want to try some new venues and this time The Avon at Britford is top of the list. I’ve spoken to the head bailiff and have some info from the web but nothing too recent. I understand that winter is the best time to fish it and that good sized roach are still a real possibility. Although I’ll be spending a couple of days there it’s a huge fishery and forming a plan is a bit daunting, the weirpools will be my starting point but after that I’m stumped. Any help from people who’ve fished it recently in narrowing down options would be much appreciated, not specific swims just general guidance on areas, whether to focus on the carriers or main river that sort of stuff. Thank you
  4. Exactly what I did, great fun if a little testing at times; http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/2298916-my-rod-restoration-project/?hl=refurb
  5. Not as far as I'm aware, at least in terms of mass production. New you either buy ready made from Harrison's dealer network or commission a custom build from one of their recommended rod builders. Used would be your best bet but it'll still be badged & sold as Harrison so won't be silly cheap.
  6. Why thank you, a sprightly 57.
  7. http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/80905-anglers-net-centrepin/?hl=%20anglersnet%20%20centrepin Sold for £140 at that time.
  8. Another Thames session today before the rains come tomorrow. Took a while to build up the swim but eventually the roach came, all of a good stamp again with this one being the best at 1-06.
  9. A great video John, I wish the Kennet could still produce such roach in numbers. I had a trotting session on the Thames yesterday which brought back childhood memories of when they could be found in most rivers and lakes, though they always seemed to be bigger back then. 6 hours, 40 odd fish and none below 8 ounces the best being 1lb 2oz, a couple of pike anglers kept pestering me for livebaits but there was no way any of these roach were finding their way onto the end of a trace. I could spend days doing that.
  10. Problem solved, I found an old Argos Leeda Specialist suit I bought a few years ago on the recommendation of Anderoo. I’d forgotten about this and don’t know why I stopped wearing it but a trip out yesterday saw me toastie warm even when the sun disappeared later in the day. It’s one piece so not what I was after but it does the job and at £50 IIRC very good value. Pity Argos don’t sell them anymore. Thanks for the replies.
  11. The second show was poor, having previously said they could get away with no car content...they didn't this time. I watched the third this morning and they were back to their best though I think it's time to drop the star getting mauled/drowned/bitten by a snake on the way to the studio slot, it was funny once but boring now. Still think it's brilliant entertainment overall.
  12. Nothing like a recommendation thread to generate some activity. My old army surplus gear is fine at keeping the rain out but not very warm, not designed for anglers and to be honest I feel a bit silly in the camo gear. I haven’t fished much since the cold snap because my clothing isn’t up to it. I’m looking for a two piece set up (preferably salopettes with braces) which is waterproof, practical (hand warmer pockets) and warm – budget up to £150 but willing to spend more for something exceptional. I want to be able to roam about in it so nothing designed for static fishing if there are such things. I’ve only had a quick look around at these suits, the pro-logic doesn’t get good reviews http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/westlake-superwarm6-suit-p356716 http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/trakker-core-multi-suit-p400288 http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/trakker-f32-combi-suit-p286817 http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/pl-comfort-thermal-suit-p182322 Any ideas?
  13. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38012655 Absolutely brilliant, a little lacking in the number of cars on the show but the three presenters could get away with no cars I reckon, the chemistry is still there and the opening sequence was sheer genius. I feel for the BBC, they had to do the right thing but in the commercial world booting Clarkson is going to backfire massively. They don't have the resource to compete.
  14. I'd spend some time with the flake/feeder/mash approach John. Once the roach become confident in taking the bread bites will be as regular as when using maggots and in my opinion a better stamp of fish will be the result. I'm new to it but plan to try the upstream ledgering method with bread a lot more over the coming winter. On Sunday the Thames roach were feeding very enthusiastically and it took me back to the days of my youth when you could find them in most waters, the prospect of a 2lb'er is every bit as exciting as a 7lb chub or 4lb perch. Forgot to mention that I found a size 16 hook with a small piece of flake pinched around it to be about right. I had another rod out with a much larger hook/flake combination for chub but nothing was interested in that.
  15. I tried it today though not in its purest form, I was after roach. I started downstream ledgering with mash in the feeder and flake on the hook, bites were regular but again I couldn’t connect. I tried everything from different hook lengths to punched bread instead of flake but no joy (and I spent three hours trying). In desperation I cast upstream, the flow wasn’t much so I wouldn’t call it true upstream ledgering but it made a difference. I caught some lovely chunky roach to 12oz and wish I’d started with that method, fading light stopped play. I need to spend some time perfecting the method but from what I learned today I would use it when targeting roach with bread in a flow which doesn’t need 2 ounces to hold bottom.
  16. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-37910431 They will "operate respectfully towards the local policies, even accepting to introduce typical local products in our offer, as requested from the local commerce regulation". That's nice of them, we can look forward to; McLiver crostini and sliced salamis, McPappardelle, McFlorentine steak with McCantucci for desert all washed down with a paper cup of Vinsanto shake. They then go on to say; “……but we cannot accept discriminatory regulations that damage the freedom of private initiative without being advantageous to anyone," Sorry, but having lunch in a one of Italy’s most historic piazzas without a McDonalds in the corner is advantageous to everybody.
  17. JV44 uses that site a lot and I think he bought some of that braid but in yellow. The stuff he has is super buoyant and very thin & smooth. He also bought a little camping stove and wind shield for a lot less than they cost in the UK, very good it is too; https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20161107232239&SearchText=cooker
  18. Blimey, this takes me back to a time when I was buying all sorts of centrepins to try them out, thankfully I've settled on just two now. I still have the Dave Swallow reel, don't have a use for it but like the way it's put together.
  19. I didn't try that Chesters, a feeder full of liquidised bread but no hookbait might have told me a lot. I'm certain the 'bites' were from fish but other than the first roach I couldn't be sure what species, may have been small bleak but they tend to disappear from that stretch after summer.
  20. I started at a foot long tail then shortened to six inches but still the same result. Tried casting with an empty feeder when I realised that I was getting through the liquidised bread too quickly, no change, still plenty of too-fast-for-me bites. I'll try the punched bread next time, I did try maggots which caught the smaller roach but I think they hooked themselves, it attracted perch too and I was trying to avoid them. Yes thinking back a more solid piece of bread may have worked.
  21. I had exactly this experience on Sunday. I was fishing the other side of a Thames lock cut with liquidised bread in an open feeder and flake on the hook, I was able to gently cast directly downstream and position the rod perpendicular to the flow. I thought this was the ideal setup and caught a 12oz roach first cast but after that I spent the rest of the day missing constant rattles and taps, bite indication was great but I just couldn’t hit them.
  22. Great picture Rich, really shouts autumn. I was on the K&A Canal this afternoon with a float rod, lobs and absolutely perfect conditions but even fishing into dark produced just two small perch. On the Thames tomorrow after chub with bread.
  23. Very mild and overcast with light winds from the south..ish. The past couple of weekends I've fished the Thames in bright conditions with a northerly breeze, a bit chilly when the sun went in but the smaller perch were still feeding. Hopefully the change will entice the larger fish, I might even manage to get up early enough for a dawn raid.
  24. John, I haven’t fished the canals for zander but spend a lot of time fishing them for perch and although tactics might be different I don’t think the watercraft is. Lock cuts are good because the boat traffic oxygenates the water but a boat going through a lock also creates flow which in my experience the perch don’t like. In my favourite swim I stop fishing when a lock is being emptied and only start again once the water has settled. So dawn is best because there has been a long period of overnight slack water and you’re fishing in low light levels. Dusk is second best in my opinion but it does have the advantage of conditions coming ‘to you’ so I quite like the two hours before dark. I’m not an early riser either.
  25. I agree, today would've been a brilliant fishing day and given the choice I would've been out targeting anything during daylight hours but I'd make sure I had lobworms with me and come dusk I'd be in my favorite perch swims.
