  3. if you have to break the ice the temperature is usually freezing ,repeated casting will cause ice to form in your rings and can cause great annoyance ,try a local river ,you keep warm by travelling light from swim to swim and the icy ring problem is less pronounced

  8. those oil incubaters are a pest to use i had one that had a "thermostat" that wound the wick up and down to adjust the temperature worked ok with a new wick and a full tank but in an effort to turn the heat up on an almost empty tank it wound the wick up out of the fuel give me electric anytime (except in a power cut)
  9. weve always been x directory ,we occasionally get a call when they use consectutive calling but choice words (the second being "off") usually clears the line does anyone know if its possible to alert you to an incoming call when on the internet ,anyone calling gets the message " the customer knows your calling" or words to that effect ,we have a modern phone with call waiting but being on the net stops the phone from alerting us of another call and also stops the phone collecting their number ,i have been getting told of for ignoring calls
  10. "However, a word of warning - birds that stab (herons, egrets, cranes and storks - and great crested grebes too) are VERY BAD NEWS at close quarters - you could lose an eye if you try to rescue one. I would only attempt to tackle one if I happened to be carrying a fencer's mask with me (as you do [[smile]] )and a pair of stout leather gloves." my son worked for a while at birdworld (a bird park locally) he was pecked by a secetary???? bird on the head and was ill for a time with poisoning luckily lots of antibiotics cured it and on returning to work he refused to go into the pen alone (they eventually made it mandatory to be accompanid) he left when they suggested he went into the ostridge pen they are now under new management and hopefully more sense is used with dangerouse birds a club pond is just across the road and the dawn chorus is out of this world [ 06. 11. the chap next door`s son decided he wanted a pond in a boggy bit of ground on his farm ,the spot was in a secluded wood next to a field ,one day he asked if i could pull his landrover out of the bog ,i had a capstan winch on mine and i had never played with it and agreed .on arriving it was possible to see the `rover from the field so he cut a path from the field to the landy ,we attached a chain to a hitch on the front bumper and he produced a rope 1 1/2" thick we put the rope round the winch and started winching instead of the landy pulling out the rope got thinner untill it broke he then went home and got a poly rope (not ideal) 2" thick ,we started winching the landy started moving but suddenly the bumper ripped off and landed a few feet infront of my landy the rope was then taken completly round the other landy and finally i pulled it free enough for it to escape ,four wheel drive is ok but when it sinks IT SINKS and it wasnt even down to the axels
  12. the local garages were the first places i tried quite a few had pumps but all were non functioning ,seems the need for paraffin for heating is no more i suppose the old tractors that used it are now garden ornaments there used to be 3 grades at one time pink, blue and green ,one for lamps, one for heating the other for fuel and boilers

  17. are swans migratory ? ,maybe they are "importing" lead from abroad and showing the symptoms overhere maybe the rings should be checked to see where these swans frequent [ 05. November 2002, 10:37 PM: Message edited by: chesters1 ]

  20. having had a few power cuts and its not even winter yet i thought i`d buy some paraffin (kerosene) for our lamps ,having scoured the area for a source of unpackaged ( fill your own container) to no avail ,i went into a well known "merchants" and bought a 4 litre container ,on presenting it at the till i was outraged to find it was £4.99 THATS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN PETROL  i wish i hadnt sold my coleman at least it ran on cheap petrol
  21. when we had our boat (many years ago) we had drying moorings (2 hrs each side of h tide)in pompey harbour it cost us £80 per year suddenly the authorities put the rate up by 50% we couldnt afford that so it was back to landrover and trailer ,i couldnt amagine the cost today all that money for a bit of mud
