  1. My neighbour has a small wooden (it may be fiberglass) dinghy, big enough for two people with oars that I could borrow. I've always wanted to fish from a boat on a lake or river but I dont know what may be required such as licensing, etc. I realise that if I want to fish on a lake I need the lake owners permission but I am unsure whats required if fishing on a river, specifically The River Nene outside of Peterborough. Do I need a license, permission, etc? Do I have to use a slipway or just a convenient location (with landowners permission) to launch from? I will put this on the coarse fishing forum as well if thats ok? Any help much appreciated.

  3. If you need some wonderfully limp, knotable and thin (but strong) wire trace then try this online store called AGM Products. I bought the Surfstrand Micro Supreme 7x7 and its really good stuff. The owner of the website is really helpful as well as I was not sure whether to use a knot or crimps. Instead of trying to sell me crimps and a crimping tool he recommended the half blood knot which works a treat. He even refunded part of my postage because it didnt cost as much as it said on the website!
  4. My brother in-law would dearly love to catch a river barbel (still water barbel is just WRONG!). He lives in Braintree, Essex and not being familiar with local rivers and such I dont know what to recommend. Any ideas?
  5. Thanks guys! I could have sworn I checked their special buys earlier this week but maybe they hadnt updated it. I'm gonne buy two of 'em!! Cheers.
  6. I gave my mother my Aldi rod bag/holdall and I really miss it! Does anyone know when they'll be doing their fishing tackle Sunday thing again? If not...does anyone have an Aldi rod bag I can buy?
  7. Based on your comments (thank you for your honest feedback) I have reduced the price to £5.99. This does cut down on the profit but I may as well sell what I have already! I think I'll try a mix and match idea where people can choose what they put on it. Cheers.
  8. Fishermans cottage in Kent up for sale for £247,000. Described as "Exceptional" and "Not to be missed!". But there is one thing they didnt mention... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/8282368.stm {link fixed}
  9. I really did consider that! Putting a bait needle and boilie drill on this was a consideration but I discarded that idea when I realised that carpies never move from one spot for days at a time so they have no opportunity to lose their gear! Now how do I paint it camo...
  10. Sorry, I should also mention that I added a feature on my website on making your own DIY line stripper. Click the "Ideas" tab on the website link above. I'll also post it on Anglers Net as well.
  11. If you pop over to THIS WEBSITE you can get a full explanation of my own product I am trying to sell. Its called The FishQuick (because it makes your fishing quick and easy) and its an item I have been using personally for over three years now. I am selling it on the website and on eBay but had no punters yet. Elton has allowed me to have a go at flogging it on here but I am also looking for any tips, advice, recommendations or what you think about The FishQuick. Good idea, bad idea, etc. If anyone from this forum would like to trial this product for me and write a review I will sell it to them for £7.50 including postage. Usual price is currently £9.99. Its one of those items thats a bit difficult to sell because its merits are not obvious. Its something I havent even considered selling for three years because I just clip it to my belt and I know its always there when I need it. As I like to roam around on the river bank or stalking around the lakes I know I will not need to look in pockets, unzip the bag or fumble around for a disgorger or line cutter. So...what do you think? Cheers.
  12. For my float fishing I swapped over to Berkley Vanish Transition Flourocarbon as its sinks better than mono lines. One thing that really wound me up was trying to get the bloody mono line to sink, even with constant washing up liquid added it would last a few casts and then start floating again. Floroucarbon is practically invisible under water, its limper and less prone to coiling up and it sinks. Obviously its no good for trotting but I have used a 10lb floroucarbon line for surface baits quite successfully. I just add some vaseline to the line. I've been buying it from THIS SELLER on ebay as its a bit hit and miss whether its stocked at my local tackle shop. There is a difference between Berkley Vanish and Berkley Trilene though. I found the Trilene to coil up like a bugger on the reel and it didnt matter how it was spooled. Another word of warning - DONT BUY CHEAP LINE! The only thing cheap line is good for is to use as a backing line to fill the spool halfway so you can put a better line on.
  13. I decided to go fishing Saturday and as I set up on the bank it was obvious that the weather was going to make ledgering or float fishing difficult. I could already see carp on the surface aimlessly cruising around like zombies! After an hours ledgering I decided to make up a 10 foot spinning rod which was powerful but still soft and flexible, 10lb line (there's a fair few snags here) and a size 8 hook on the end. I stuffed my pockets with dog biscuits, floating hookable pellets, hooks, vaseline (to make the line float), disgorger, forceps, etc. Grabbed my landing net and went for a walk. There was only one other angler on this particular lake so I crept around the other side and flicked in a couple of biscuits. there were a couple of nice size carp less than a rod length out and they were quite hungry! When they heard the "Plop" of free offerings go in they turned around and headed straight for them. A couple more biscuits went in for good measure and were also confidentaly taken so I gently lowered my floating hookbait in... ...One gentle suck and after a few terrifying minutes of holding on for dear life and steering him away from the snags I landed a 10lb common. I went off to the other lake and had one side all to myself. Lots of carp milling around and it was almost easy pickings. Almost every swim there were obvious targets and many of them accepted my baited hook. I didnt land all of them obviously, some managed to get away in the reeds and sometimes the hook pulled and a few times I had to reel in quick and sppok the fish to avoid those bloody greedy swans. On Saturday I came away with a smile on my face after landing 4 fish with the smallest at 6lb. On Sunday I spent the morning doing my chores. I have to keep the missus happy dont I?! But at 1pm I chucked the same rod in the car and drove over to the same place again. The sun was out in full strength and many of the carp anglers were sitting around their bite alarms sunbathing and wondering why they werent catching anything. I crept around on the bank away from them and spotted a small group of carp on the surface. I didnt even bother with free offerings this time, I just cast in. Within 20 seconds I was into another powerful carp who took me for a tour of the lake for a while until I got him in the net. A nice 7lb mirror. 40 minutes later I was into another surface cruiser, this time a 7.5lb common. I spent some time on another swim trying my best to get them to take my bait but they steered away from it or sucked it in and spit it out. I gave up and walked to another lake and quickly hooked into another good fish but lost him when the hook pulled. I gave up at this spot when a charming angler sent his kids round to to me "Go and see the man over there and watch him catch a fish, I'm sure he wont mind". I did mind when they started playing silly buggers on the bank next to me! Why do people with kids think that everyone else likes kids? Its the same with dogs! With the exception that I like dogs. Anyway, I went to another lake and after half an hour of charming the carp with dog biscuits I hook into the biggest at 13lb. I cheekily asked the chap fishing around the corner to take a picture as he had come over to see what I had hooked onto anyway. I apologise for the hat! Most surprising were the amount of people who were watching the carp swim out in front of them but did nothing about it, then complained they hadnt caught anything all day! I had a fantastic time!
  14. Perhaps hook it as you would some luncheon meat and then put it in a small PVA stocking and cast it out? I'm not sure if the banana would melt the PVA though. To be frank it seems like an awful lot of hassle to go through! I guess you could also pole fish with it.
  15. That fishing rod bag is the best I have ever had! For the price it is exceptional and holds all my rods, an 8m pole, landing net pole, bank sticks, umbrella and 4 reels + spare spools. It has room to carry 3 made up rods in seperate compartments. Seriously good!
  16. I think for the price its worth a go. I've just bought it so (if I remember) I'll let you know how I get on.
  17. Some fisheries have a website, even a basic one but many dont. I think generally it all comes down to the IT knowledge and business acumen of the fishery owner. If he is an old fashioned kind of person then the idea of a website (what is this web thingy anyways?!) has never crossed his mind. I could even generalise/stereotype and perhaps upset a few people by saying that many of these owners are farmers and could be VERY old fashioned! There are several lakes near me which dont have their own website but someone has at least included them in a local fisheries directory with information on prices, rules, opening times, etc. My advice is, if you have some knowledge of how to build a website then why not ask your local fishery manager if he would like a free site in exchange for free fishing for a year? Thats what I intend to do! But just like in any business, if you dont keep up with the times, latest technology and business practise then you may lose out. However...some fishery owners may not want any more people fishing on their water!
  18. Can I ask you regular "Rakers" if this would be a good rake head to use if I try to make another one? Wolf Garden Soil Rake It looks like it two of these could be fixed quite easily and securly to each other with cable ties and a rope attached to the whole at the end of the handle.
  19. I have tried to make one with poor results so I am keen to just buy one that I know will work. The only place I have found one is on eBay but is is an auction so it could go for any amount. I have seen another with extending rods but its quite expensive. Do any suppliers out there manufacture and sell them? I cant say I have ever looked at my local tackle shops for them.
  20. IS there anything to do other than fishing? For me its just unnecessary time spent earning money until I can get on the bank!
  21. Picture the scene...your stalking carp in the margins. You've got some nice dark, clothing on with some of it camouflaged material. Your settled in position quietly without making any vibrations or quick movements. You lower your rod and get your bait in position. You slowly scatter a few freebies around your float and just quietly sit and wait for some action. Can anyone guess what heppens next?? "ANY LUCK MATE?" You grimace as you watch a wave created by the double figure carp as they flee the scene. This is a public area and one of the things you just have to deal with. I wouldnt have minded so much if it was a kid shouting it out but this was bellowed out to me from a full grown (VERY full grown!) adult who was looking for a spot to fish. If there was an emoticon for Ar5ehole I would use it!
  22. Cant they recruit some more intersting positions? Like being a full time angler...paid £40,000 a year to go fishing at various places? Please???
  23. I thought I would give a report on the fishing at Yarwell Mill in case someone else searches through the forum for info on it. They have 1 lake of about 2 acres and an approximate stretch of 1/3rd of a mile of the River Nene. There is a problem though. They have many static caravans and regular caravans there which are situated on the banks of the lake and river and you can only fish in an empty spot. You must have the caravan owners permission to fish behind their caravan. There's not many spots to fish on the lake otherwise but I did find a nice spot next to some lily pads on the lake. They have the lock as well which was a good spot for perch. If you follow the river further down it goes into a field which seems to be part of a nature walk. I dont know who owns the rights to fish in this stretch but there are some nice spots there. Further down there is a small footbridge where it meets a smaller cut of the river. We dangled our rods and legs of this bridge and had a cracking time catching small bleak and perch. I had a perch of about a pound on worm. It was like being a kid again! We then watched 3 good size tench browse around for a few seconds before they saw our legs dangling over the side and took off. I fished the lake in the morning at sunrise and again in the late evening. There were lots of tench bubbles rising around the lily pads but there was a lot of weed on the lake bed which made presenting a bait very difficult. On the four occasions when I hooked a fish it dove into the lily pads and the soft action float rod couldnt get them out. 3 times the hook pulled and one snapped the hooklink. I changed to a stronger float rod and at 11pm also changed to worm. I hooked into a fish almost straight away and the stronger rod gave me enough muscle to pull it out of the lilies. I should have know better to use worm at night when I got the 1.5lb eel into the net! I have asked the site if I could rake the swim next time as I am positive this will improve the situation. Many of the others fishing had no luck either and the warden laughed at my unhooking mat as he was sure I would not be using it! He did say that there are many carp and tench in the lake but its very difficult to catch them. According to some of the regular caravan owners (some of them seem to be residential?) the whole lake bed is covered in this weed. I think the weed may be called Milfoil. I did manage to take a lovely picture of the lake at sunrise on Saturday morning: The campsite was well run, toilets and showers good and a nice place to go fishing but good spots are hard to find.
  24. I have a 5m telescopic whip and the first time I used it I struck into a 6lb carp! I almost had a toilet accident on the bank! I then used my dads 8m pole off the front of a cruiser on the Norfolk Broads and caught a 1lb perch. I had mostly seen poles as a match fishing must have but now I can see that in certain situations a pole may be quite fun. I am looking to spend around £50 on my first pole. Probably 8 metres would be suitable as a cheap long pole would be quite heavy. One that it already elasticated so I can enjoy bringing in tench and bream but also be able to land a larger carp if I'm lucky. I cant say I will use it all the time so I dont want to spend too much money on it. I have looked around some online shops and found an 8 metre Shakespeare pole with spare top tip and pre-elasticated on eBay. eBay 8m pole I have been to my local tackle shop but they usually cater for the serious pole angler and I dont have several hundred pound to spend! Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated.
  25. I thoroughly enjoyed my first overnight session, although I felt absolutely knackered when I got home! I went straight to the lake on Friday after work and got setup, I probably started fishing at about 3:30pm. Oddly enough this is the same lake that I was a member of last season and never caught a single fish there in three attempts, not even a perch! I was a bit sceptical about going there but it is a very nice place set well away from any roads and with a locked gate preventing access to non-members. Its not an easy place to find anyway so you do feel very secure there. After an hours fishing I didn’t get anything on the feeder, I think the splashing of the feeder was scaring them away so I swapped to a float rod and immediately got a nice perch of about half a pound on worm. I also cast my carp rod out into a weedy area with a floating pellet on it so it would pop up above the weed. After a couple of hours a 4lb Tench took hold of it but as the lake is quite weedy I had a struggle to get it out. I tried live baiting for a larger perch but nothing took it so I went back to worm and fished with a starlite on the float until 11:30pm. It looked like it was going to rain so I reeled in, moved the carp rod up the bank so if I did have to run out of the tent to pick it up when the bite alarm went off I wouldn’t fall in the lake! After your advice here I knew I should get everything out of the "Gangway" between my bivvy opening and the rod to prevent accidents. It was lovely laying there propped up on the camp bed just looking out and listening to the rain on the tent and the sound of distant thunder. I soon started to drift off to sleep but then there was a single blip on the bite alarm, I jumped up waiting for a run…adrenalin pumping through me…but nothing happened. I settled back down and was just drifting off again when there came a couple of blips on the alarm…heart pounding, I sat up and waited…nothing. This carried on for another 2 hours until I decided to remove the tension in the line and fish it slack to avoid these little line bites. Because of the excessive weed I could not sink the line so even small fish could set it off. At about 3am I had a run…Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppppp…I was up and out of bed and within seconds I had lifted the rod, wound the handle to tighten up to…nothing. I just went back to sleep, I didn’t cast back out again. At about 5am I woke up to a foggy, misty morning. I made some coffee and had a think about how I was going to fish today. Tony (who I went there with) said he tried corn the day before but didn’t get anything so I decided to try feeding the area with more hemp seed and also keep trickling in some corn every few minutes. The idea was to get them confidently feeding on sweetcorn without putting any on a hook. My gamble paid off, after about three quarters of an hour of feeding them corn I put a large kernel on a size 12 and cast in. Just as the float had settled it sunk under and I had my first tench of the day. It was a hell of a job to steer them around the weed and lilly pads though and occasionally they would get stuck. All told I had 6 tench that day until 1pm when we started packing up. I lost 2 on the carp rod which I had cast out as a sleeper rod, hoping for a large carp. Each run on this I hooked a tench and had almost got them to the bank when they came off in the weed. 6 Tench, 3 Rudd and several Perch. Needless to say I am now a member of this lake!
