  1. Im having ID problems myself this season! Catching a lot of small Chub/Dace on the Thames and despite checking to see if the Dorsal has a concave or convex trailing edge still cant tell?
  2. Same as Steve I would like to see the mouth but the dorsal and general body say Rudd to me initialy as well. Being such a hardcore specimen hunter I would be gutted if the 10ozs chublets Im catching are MONSTER Dace!
  3. Ive got several available. Email me at bass-online@hotmail.com and I will take some photos to send you with prices tomorrow. All run well but some have more paint than others! Prices from £85 to £125
  4. Paul Ive miss laid my mobile have you got Jo's house phone number? if so give me a bell on that mate. If not PM me yours.
  5. Great stuff! Another plug for Guides and Blanks from me as well and yes avoid Fish Hawk as well! Ive still got a life times supply of finer grade threads left from my rod building days (don't do many now just repairs/modifications) But I am low on the rthicker grades I prefer (both for speed and my failing eyesight) for carp and sea rods. You can ocaissionally pick it up on Ebay but I suppose I really should spend some time sourcing an alterrnative
  6. Managed to grab an afternoon on the River Thames at Canbury Gardens, Kingston. Planning to try for one of the infamous Thames catfish here this summer! Thought I would ease in to it though and have a few feeder and float fishing sessions just to get a feel for it. Was very slow but after 4 hours of banging a groundbait feeder out got a shoal of bream to move in. Had a dozen or so between 1 1/2 lb and 1 1/2lb then as quick as the showed they disappeared!
  7. Well I had intended to pack up and come home on Wednesday but decided to call it quits after all the guests had left Monday a a few last minute chores done. I started on Thursday night as I was delayed by being sent the wrong prop shaft for the wagon and after getting stuck in the ford twice last week wasn't going to take any chances for the weekend! As most know despite having little interest ion our carp lake I usually go on it on the Fish In to make a bit more room on the Coarse Lake. No longer being that interested in Carp I usually target the Eels as in previous years weve had some remarkable results with most fish being a good size (3lb+) Sadly not a single eel and every morning totally intact works coming back. Only time the alarms sounded was when the off bottom rigs were wiped out by half asleep Mudpigs banging into them! Dint even have the decency to take the worms and fool me into thinking I had a lump of an eel like previous years! Lots of my eel mates were offering suggestions by FB and Text suggesting that they were preoccupied with moping spawn up....but sadly the carp havnt even started thinking about it yet let alone having done it! Kind of underlined it when Dales arrived and put in his nights as well. Andrew was targeting the carp this year but took a kind of 50/50 approach with his maggot tactics and he never had one either. Right might sound very arrogant (ie I couldn't catch them so they cant be there!) but Im afraid Im now very worried that the Carp lakes eels (all much the same size so most likely same year class) have upped and gone swim about to the Sargasso! Was a full moon period (which in my experience trashes most fishing) but it was just so dead for so long. Be a great shame if I am right but hey this is the nature of eels and as such nothing can be done other than feel very grateful I had the opportunity while it lasted. Second week of blanks on the trot (other than two small eels I blanked whilst Tench fishing on the week before the fish in!) so Winghams not quite so magical for me as normal at the moment! LOL But hey other than my inability to catch anything I enjoyed the Fish In despite the work. Always good to see old faces and meet new. We don't seem to be having the AN Fish Ins like we used to so think we should kick start the whole thing again. Remember ANYONE can arrange a Fish In its hasn't got to be on a top syndicate like Wingham just a venue you know well and can sort the details on. Preferably something a bit different or themed.
  8. "Best cheap big lures" don't think such exists to be honest. But what do you call cheap?
  9. "What is wrong with decent mixed fisheries?" Kind of somes up my view...... but sadly I am very much in the minority these days. The modern angler is quite simply a "carp angler" easy as that . Anyone who cant see this either doesn't ever visit a tackle shop,go to a variety of waters or simply leave his house after taking his head out of a 1960's edition of Anglers Mail! To the vast majority carp angling is angling. So once this is realised the answers to the question are- Other fish take your bait intended for carp Other fish eat the food intended for carp Other fish stop your fishery being such an "exclusive" fishery and therefore limiting how much you can charge So that is "What is wrong with decent mixed fisheries?" in the mid of modern "angling" Regarding highly managed "specialist" Coarse fishing waters....well I've never seen any yet! Wingham was the only one ever that I know of but as indeed Wingham shows such a fishery in todays "angling" is simply not viable long term. Simple economics and market forces not allowing this type of venture. Sadly I think Wingham (unless another one of us "allrounders" wins the Lottery and has the balls and total disregard to personal gain that Steve Burke did to run such a project) will be a very unique one off that wont be there for ever and certainly not repeated. Yes to a degree the "Carp Machine" (be it big carp, match carp or the carp mags or carp companies) is to blame but ultimately it is US the non carp blinded all rounders or non carp specialists or just general "pleasure anglers" (a very rare beast these days) that's to blame simply because we are not prepared to pay the same price to persue our chosen way of fishing as they are theirs. So maybe rallying the troops to defend "angling" against Danny's Carp Machine (as well as being totally pointless) is simply not the way? maybe we need to simply just put our hands in our pockets a bit deeper? But I fear its now to late the Carp Machine is now so much in power we are now such a minority that we simply wont have enough like minded people to compete financially. I see the likes of myself (hopefully not in my life time) being reduced (or should I say "returning"?) to the little farm ponds and dissuaded stretches of canal and river to fish. Doesn't sound to bad does it maybe....but of course others will be forced to do this as well and not like minded anglers but carp anglers who cant afford to fish "carp waters"! and they them selves will try to turn our sanctuaries into their own "carp waters" by illegal stocking/removal of fish! we (the general/all round.non carp specialist angler) just wont win.......but hey its a mute point because by this stage "we" wont even exists! EDIT: By WE I mean the non carp only angler not just us ourselves.
  10. I was over on Plantation most of last week Den and there was a very vocal cuckoo! Will never fail to amaze me how "noisey" such a "quiet" place is. As it seems Im no longer able to catch any Tench let alone a big one Im quite glad Im over on the Carp lake targeting the eels! Didn't do a great deal after them last year (in fact with everything didn't do a great deal of anything!) If those pesky Mud Pigs leave me alone it will be interesting to see if they are still there (I say that as they are all around the same size, if not a bit bigger than their mates in the Coarse Lake were when they did the off!) Be nice to try and up the record to 6 (which I thinks possible and around the top mark) but that would just be a bonus. For me the AN fishing is more about the catching up with old friends and meeting new. Its a VERY busy time for us but also a most enjoyable one .I was going over the lake today but still awaiting a new front prop shaft for the car so soon as here (hopefully today) and fitted I will be on my way. See you all Sat morning for a cuppa and bacon sarnie. Anyone whose arranged to come down on the Friday night and sleep in the club house my mobile number is 07944722835 if theres anything you need.
  11. Take a look at this U turn then on none other than our own AN Face book page!- https://www.facebook.com/AnglersNet/posts/10152929122441758?notif_t=notify_me
  12. Still playing the "otter card" though I see. Shame he has dropped the nuscence (im never going to be able to spell this word!) fish as it showed the true colours. Fishery managers are getting very nervous about this and none carpers on "fallow waters" starting to worry as well. Like I initially said (first thread) Mr F has the ability to give such a project a very realistic chance of succeeding. I wish he was just a numpty but clearly hes not
  13. And there's me thinking that 50 was the new 80 Steve! Newt "clean living" ! sorry just doesn't register in my brain mate! Im doomed! Despite my (nearly a year now ) "new life style" (NO Kebabs or Diet Coke!) Im still addicted to bread! just that I can only manage two Sandwich Thins at most now else Im extremely ill! Having no stomach has certainly helped the weight (hit a bit of a platau and been stuck around 19 1/2 stone for several months now but never felt so good in years! Diabeties totally controlled and the ME although still present is no where near so deabillitating on a bad day, just the water works and cataracts to get done and they will have completely re built me! Not quite the 6 Billion Dollar man though! But don't fret mate Im not going any where till I can get you and Bobby over here for some GOOD English fishing, and if your not up to it me and bruv will have to jump in those highly uncomfortable Business Class seats again! Despite monster heavy work hours though Im getting out more than I have been able to for several years and the absence and definite lack of fish seems to have revitalised my drive a bit! Ive allways been keener to fish when I cant catch! But I must admit (despite heavily taking the **** out of them) the likes of Dave, Den and Leon have always left me feeling the utmost respect, not just health or fitness issues but the keenness and drive they still show for our game.... mind you old Newt (once mistaken by a checkout girl in Brass Pro for my father! ) aint no spring chicken and he's still living the "Huckleberry Finn" life style to the full! Yeagh weve got it wrong all round 80 aint the new 50 or 50 the new 80...................its 70 that's the new 14! As Ive always said "growing old aint optional but growing up is!
  14. All I can hope is that Im still as keen and active as you Dave when Im 60 yet alone 80! Good on you mate, see you at the weekend.
  15. Got to agree with Dave it was Maddocks "kiss and tell" book Carp Fever that really kick started the modern era of "Instant Carp Fishing" It enabled people to go straight into carping thus negating the old learning curve. This learning curve not only taught you the very basics of ALL angling but in turn gave you a RESPECT for other fish and ways of catching them. Without Maddocks we wouldn't have had the likes of Fairbrass.
  16. Thanks Dave made me chuckle! Allways been a favourite JW moment of mine. Always liked the guys (Ive always presumed his film crew?) laughing in the back ground! The guys had a lot of stick over the years but Ive allways thought the fact this was shown is testament to his sense of humour and that he don't really take himself to seriously at all! Yes we had Jack Hargreaves,Terry Thomas and Jack Charlton before him but undoubtedly the accolade of "Mr TV Angling" has to go to Wilson. Despite the heavy panning from anglers it was the style of the Go Fishing programmes (ie the looking at the flowers, local places of interest etc etc as well as the fishing action) that appealed to the wider public and as such opened the door for more TV fishing. People nocked it (anglers) but I wonder what they now prefer, the hardcore, technical, product promotion type stuff (such as Thinking Tackle) or Wilsons old style? either way without him blazing the way the modern stuff would never have made main screen viewing.
  17. If he ended up with a Lake in every county I'd be amazed. Budgie, out of interest what was your reply to his mates comments about the Coarse Lake at Wingham? Afraid my reply is unprintable! Normally I would have gone into full "lecture" mode and pointed out the basic principles of good fishery management and cited examples etc, would have probably stopped short at actually telling him about the size that some of the few Carp in the course lake actually go to but simply decided it was pointless continuing the conversation as frankly I wasn't interested in him or he interested in me, my views or anything I had to bring to the discussion as he knew it all any way! Im turning into a miserable very unsociable (when it comes to angling) old fart Im afraid! (in fact taking a leaf out of my life long angling hero's book! eh Den ) In all fairness though I wonder how many times people (as in "known"/ "celebrity" anglers) actually get "bad press" thanks to their "friends" actions rather than what they have actually done them selves? As in this case Mr F coping the back lash at my displeasure about his "mates" attitude/comments? Quite a lot I wouldn't mind betting.
  18. Topical as ever John! Lol its going to be on my doorstep for the next 12-18 months and heard rumours of big eels (not that I imagine anyone fishes for them) Never even new it existed till today. Was run by CALPAC at one time so hoping to get some background from guys who fished it then as apparently the syndicate on it more recently was pretty hush hush and the "local lake for local people" Roysten Vassey attitude has all ready cropped up during my brief investigations so far!
  19. Does any body have any info on a lake called Barwell Lake also known as Winny Hill syndicate, it's next to the a3 near chessinton world of adventures,
  20. Aint that about right though! The official body is quite happy and can see the sense but the tin pot local commitee man cant!
  21. I think that's a fair reply Andy. I can understand why Den has moaned as it does seem to be the in thing to nock Mr Fairbrass ,his crew, company and its products. However is people have got a genuine reason to do so then that's equally fine in my book. Like I said though for me its pretty irellevant if his motives are well meant or not I would be worried about ANY person who wanted to take over the control of waters en block and turn them into a single species venue regardless of what that species was! What happened to the days when anglers could "share" waters and run them for the general good of angling? and in my book angling means all fish and all anglers. Ive seen it on both sides! First the match anglers had control (as in general they were in the majority, well kind of as all though there was allways more general/"pleasure" anglers the matchmen were the biggest "united"/ represented group) they insisted on having every thing and running it to suit their own needs (note NOT running it well but running it to THEIR needs) Carp/Specimen hunters got a pretty raw deal. Now the Carper is in the majority and we se the same ie everything has to be their way and for their benefit! Weve simply just exchanged selfish (short sighted) control freaks who wanted cannalised banks and flat pegs every 15m, all predators killed, all carp removed because when hooked by accident they took to long to land in a match, and tons of small silver fish put in to selfish (short sighted) control freaks who want enourmous flat gravelled/wood barked swims every 25m, all predators removed/shot/killed, all non Carp removed as they are a nucence and tons of the fattest bloated Mudpigs possible stocked! So weve got no where! Mark my words in Mr Fairbrass had been born 30 years earlier he wopuld have been a hardcore match angler and running a campaign to turn every "fallow water" into a match lake! Why cant people just enjoy and respect all forms of angling? surely the variety of it is what keeps people in the game long term? (our Den being a perfect example of this) All this "specialisation" just leads to a very blinkered approach. Again as Mr Fairbrass has proved he knows his onions I think its quite frightening that such a capable man is behind this move (again regardless of motives). Simply as he would be more than capable of making this happen. Andy's "so who decides what a fallow lake" comment is very pertinent. We've sadly seen the loss of many other good non carp waters as they've been "turned" into specialist carp waters (same as in the "match days" we saw great specimen/predator venues trashed) How many of the waters that non carpers (I use that term but accept that there are many ,like my self and Den who fish for carp as just another of the many species) love will be deemed as "fallow" simply because they aint already carp waters but would be good ones? Not Mr Fairbrass himself admittedly but one of his business associates/friends/gang told me once (and recently) that Wingham Coarse lake was "a waste" as it would make a great carp water....I ask all of you who have fished it /are be going to have a crack at it this month to tell me if its a "waste" or not! (yes I know its a bit different but Im just trying to give an example of what so many "carpers" would regard as "wasted" water) I actually think its quite a good carp water as it is! Again why cant we have a balance/a mixture which then allows people both variety and choice? all this "saviour scheme" will do is eat away at that variety and choice. Like the whole commercial issue I have NO PROBLEM with people taking on run down, poorly managed, understocked waters and turning them into fisheries (and to a degree would even be happy if they were single species waters as although I don't think these make for the best fisheries and again its sad they are so narrowly focussed BUT better than a stagnant over run empty pond) But the issue is these "deserving waters" wont be taken over/developed it will be ready established (but non carp orientated ones) that are. Den you commented on the daft name calling and seemingly "Korda Bashing" but didn't say a lot about the actual proposed plans? be interested in your views on my genuine concerns. Would you as an Allrounder like to see a bit more variation? a bit more "angling unity" or do you think those days have gone and anglings only future is the way of carp? A genuine question as I respect your experience and do worry myself that even though I don't personally like it the modern carp scene (where practically every angler you meet is a carp angler) is the closest angling has ever actually been to being "united"?
  22. Dam you man cant stop singing it now!
  23. John many many thanks for brightening up an otherwise very dull morning! That tickled I that did! (as Peter Stone used to say!)
  24. The worrying thing Keith is that he is a very influential "nut" with a lot of business acumen and bit of dough behind him !
  25. Oh hope you all noted the way this has been "lead" with the Saving angling from Otters thing and in the whole video only the brief mention of them! Definitely playing on anglings insecurities or what!
