  1. Hi there ,I Kayak fished Crummok last year for Pike and done allright, although access aint great, mainly fish Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite and the sea off the Yak, from what i can gather theres a few of us in cumbria who kayak fish though im still to see one in the flesh,Windemear and Coniston seem to get a few fellas kayak fishing.

  2. firstly when i mentioned mackeral being badly handeled i also said that this was something that both sea and course anglers do ,again please bother to read the thread in full if you feel you have to give an opinion, and secondly i also stated that i took budgies point as being a newcomer to pike fishing i would have to take his word on wether pike mercy killings never take place ,if you guys say thats the case fair enough, the problem arised after i offered some advice witch was straight away dissmissed as rubbish and as u can see for yourself was good and sound advice ,thanks to the guy who posted the link.seems to me theres a bit of a click on this forum as there are with a lot of them and if this is how new posters are treated then people will look elsewhere ,look whats happened to the kayak forum.ps after reading some of the past pike related topics on here it seems the majority of pike anglers cant have a reasonble debate without falling out with each other so this has come as no great supprise.

  3. No, what led this thread to degenerate was your unwillingness to be told that when you kill pike "for humane reasons" you are doing it because you can't be bothered to learn how to unhook them. If you can't, then don't fish for them.
can someone please show me where i showed my unwillingness to be bothered to learn how to unhook pike?as ive allready mentioned ive spent plenty of time learning how to do this correctly reading various different material and watched lots of video fottage on the subject, all i asked is if the worst thing happened and the pike was seriously injured ,hopefully of no fault of my own ide know how to kill the fish quickly and effecintly to save it anymore suffering ,sorry if the thought of this happening is to emotive a subject for the majority of people on here to dicuss rationaly but it must be something that could happen ,again hopefully not.

My gammy leg is telling me there's a ban coming. Well it's that or it's going to rain. One of the two.
i think your right foul and abbusive lanuge shouldnt be tolerated ,and if i moderated on this forum ide ban that budgie fella straight away.
  4. what a load of total bollaks ,it was your arsey responce that led this thread to degenerate to this noncence in the first place by assuming ide done no homework on the subject ,by the way i have no intention of killing pike or any other fish for that matter knowingly or not, unlike urself who still thinks it aint a problem to handel mackeral poorly and then when shown the error of your ways dismiss the info out of hand if theres any problem with this web site its whoppers like u.

  5. cant be arsed with this ive asked for some info and took it on board unlike youself on the other hand ,obviously u think u know it all and wont take some advice when offered ,go ahead and google relesing mackeral and youl find the heat from your hands burns the fish killing them, and as i said before as it seems u have problems reading that the best way is to shake them off the hook and a damp cloth is much better than a bear hand .ps theres even a link on this very forum sumwhere with this info u whopper.

  6. `No you were asking how to humanely kill a pike because it hads been damaged by an angler deep hgooking it.I thought you would be glad to here that there was no need to think along these lines as with the proper knowledge and equipment the situation need never arise.Instead of trying to find out about this knowledge you were still not prepared to change your belief and went off on one about how carining to fish you are and how terrible pike and course anglers treat mackeral.A species that I (as a sea angler as well as a pike and course angler) hold in high esteem as both a sporting fish and a bait fish.Didnt know they were under threat mind you  Not to sure how we are meant to hold them either as I for the last 43 years of angling have always thought bare wet hands was the reccomended way?

You inadvertanyly did raise a good topic but seem to have not liked the reply. My comments re learning /finding out how to handle/unhook pike before trying to catch then and thus ending up in the predicament you raise werent aimed at you specificly but any of the other hundreds of people looking in who might not have thought about it.

So do you still feel a pike "expert" needs to tell you and everyoner else looking in how best to kill a pike you (not you specificly) have mortally wounded by catching it or better to be told/shown how to avoid it in the first place?

sorry but i cant imagin there never being a time where a mercy killing isnt the best thing to do for the fish but as a novice pike angler ile take your word on that.as for finding out about propper unhooking and handeling i think your presuming that i havent bothered to find out as much info as possible witch i can assure u i have i mearly wanted an answere on something ide never heard disscused or writen about .and by the way if you have indeed been sea fishing for the last 40 odd years then i can only assume that youve been fishing with your eyes closed if you havent noticed the huge decline in mackeral mainly due to large factory ships witch incendently dont even bother to fish my area any more due to the decline of stocks .ps the best way to unhook mackeral is if posible to shake them off the hook and if that dont work then handel them with a damp cloth ,never handel with bear hands wet or otherwise as the heat from your hands burns the skin eventually killing them hope this info is somthing the hundreds of people looking in may take in to account next time they fish for them.
  7. no agenda at all mate sorry u think that ,just thought ur post witch included somthing along the lines off cant be bothered to find out somewhat condessendin as by asking these questions thats surley what im doing .the point i made about mackeral is only put there to asure u that i do take fish consevation seriously and thought it would be a good peice of info for a course fishing forum thats all as they seem to be the worst offenders .

  8. The point I was trying to make marko is that by using good angling practices, having the correct equipment and above all the correct knowledge the need to "mercy kill" shouldnt arise.

The only time Ive ever needed to kill a pike is when its been taken for dissection or to be eaten. In other words when the whole intention is to catch to kill.Ive used an oversized "priest" made from a heavy section of oar handle.LIke all fish a good sharp rap on the back of the head at the base of the skull does the job.

Not sure how to minimise deep hooking or deal with it when it occurs then you really need to learn how to.Cant be bothered to learn then simply dont pike fish and thats the only way you will garantee to not ever deep hooking one.

ok mate i take your point but even if prepared as much as humanly possible ,and belive me i take great care towards fish handling and im also fully equiped with revelent tools for the job **** happens sometimes and it would also be good to be prepared for this eventually ,belive me sumtimes i despair at pike anglers who during the summer stock up on mackerall for bait whos populations under sever threat ,dont mind them being caught for the pan or bait but it realy pisses me off to see course or sea fisherman after getting their fill returning fish using bear hands and without doubt leaving the fish to a slow and painfull death, thought this might be some usufull info for all u pike experts out there who never seem bothered to ask simelar questions when as u put it ur stocking up on mackerall for the winter ,mark
  9. hi again ,dont suppose any of u experts fancy answering my question about dispatching pike would u or is this somthing thats frowned upon in fresh water fishing do u leave injured fish to die a slow painful death?

  10. Hi all ,first post in this section of the forum having turned to the drinking water from the salt water variety of angling recently, and as a novice pike angler im glad this question has come up.one thing i noticed in the artical is it says never return a pike that still has hooks in it so does this meen dispatch the fish quickly and efficiently as possible and if so how?ive done this on numeras occasions with sea fish when iv'e doubted their chance of survival and for instance know that various technics apply to different species for instance the quickest way to kill a mackeral is to inseret your finger in its mouth and snap its neck(not bash its head on the peir wall like some numptys i regular see).So is there a technique for pike ?Please note this would only be a last reasort and only taken on in the belife that the fish wouldnt survive and in so saving it from slow lingering death. PS are treble hooks realy nessercery when pike -pearch fishing and do single hooks result in less hook ups? if possible ide like to use only singles and barbless to aid unhooking . Mark

  11. Thanks for all the help.

I've checked out some US reviews too and all went for the Manta Ray over the Tarpon too.

  12. The 2008 version of TidePlotter has a new feature that shows the direction and strength of the tide at each hour for a given location. It's a bit clucky but does the job and at £10 a pop for a year, cheaper for 3 years I think its total value. Comes with a version that works on Windows Mobile to.

    JRT

thanks jtr looked in to that and it looks a great bit of kit .

  13. No problem mate i will have a better idea tomorrow though, high tides are around midday give or take an hour. so depending on the weather..........fingers crossed!!!! will let you know.

    cheers

    dingle

  14. Ouch - thanks for sharing David - will make doubly sure I don't leave rigs lying around now.

had a dog pick up my bait off the peir once david ,luckily it only hooked in the mouth although it required a vet to remove it couldve been worse ,also caught me cat sniffing round my gear a couple of times lucky escape me thinks ,hope cassie recovers well she looks quite old .all the best mark.

  15. sounds good.

should be out over the weekend if the weather holds out.

by the way a good site to look at for the weather at st bees is xc weather it gives you the wind speeds which is dead useful.

    cheers

    dingle

cheers dingle cant make it out for a paddel this weekend but can make it through for a chat if yer stll headed out would be great to come through and check out your yak and pick your brains a bit , if your out yust let me know what time you plan on setting off and from where and ile come through if thats allright with you thaanks mark.
  16. What you need is a Tidal Race book for your area. This gives you the direction of run, and speed in knots (usually given in Thick arrows for Maximum Knots for Spring and Thin arrows for Minimum Knots for Neap), for every hour from Low to High and Back down to Low again, for both Spring and Neap tides.

This will enable you to plan your trips and to use the run of tide to your advantage, rather than be paddling against it. Most good chandlers should sell Tidal Race books, should be around a tenner.

    Enjoy.

thanks for the good advice guys much appreciated.

  17. allright fellas read a few times on here about the speed of the tide just wondered how you know how fast there going to be ?is there information out there avalible to determin this or am i wrong in thinking the bigger the tide the quicker it is and even then how do you know how fast, any info for a newbie would be much appreciated .thanks mark.

  18. Hi Marko, SDD, Martin.

    Yep its been a while!!!!!!

    Marko,

    SDD,

nice to see your still at it and with a bit of success too!!!

    Cheers

    Dingle

hello there David,Martin,Dingle, and marra Rodg just had me first paddle today seems im an expert in going round in circles lol , never mind sure ile get the hang of it soon enough.would be great if we could all get a meet organised some time ,anyway ile try to keep posting and let u know how im doing Mark.

  19. completely agree jeff, atm i'm a bit of a fair weather kayaker, i use shorts when its hot and my flotation suit when its cold, not ideal, especially if you end up getting wet, but i haven't yet picked up a dry suit though its on my, to purchase list.

in the summer i'd have thought a wet suit would be perfect though.

i use a surfboard leash so i don't end up drifting away from my kayak so time in the sea is minimal, and i also wear my pfd other than when anchored up in good conditions, but i do carry a sleeping bag, large towel and a flask of tea in the hull as i know from years of shore and boat fishing, just how quick hypothermia can set in, but in the summer months hyperthermia is also an issue, especially if you are overdressed. The amount of city folk, (sry about the stereotype, me living in devon an all) i have seen taken by ambulance after a day in the sun is shocking, ppl just don't realise how dangerous it is and when you are at sea with the suns reflection and paddling can all raise your temperature very quickly.

thanks for the addvice guy ,mark.

  20. sorry jeff was your last point addressed to me or the naked guy ?if to me is a wetsuit not dressing for the water temp ?or is it the idea of fleses and cheap cagole that your refering to ,relise the fleses would have to be quick wicking garments cheeres mark.

  21. hi as a newbie to yak fishing, yak arrives in 10 days now :D can i ask what u fellas wear mainly in the summer ,was thinking of going for a long jhon wet suit with a flease top witch i can remove if it gets to hot not much chance of thet happening i know, and over that some sort of light wind breaker pants and top and on me feet a pair of wet boots 5 ml crewsavers i think and a hat what u think too much too little?am i gonna roast on hot days or freez in our more usuall summer days bear in mind im in cumbria witch hasent had a summer for 4 years ;) any advice appreacted ps great forum this cheers mark.

  22. Hows ta deurn lad?Bass Lake is a good place to start-its quiet so nobody can see you if you make a d*ck of yourself!!!Tickets are available from the Pheasant Inn. £6-00 per day or £68-50 for a season. This covers you for your boat as well. The easiest spot to launch is at Piel Wyke, its got a good slipway and tha can git t'motor reet doon to t'watter.Fishing is generally good for pike and perch but the size of the pike has declined in recent years, with a 10 pounder being a good fish now. But as SeaDooDavid was saying about Coniston, they go like stink!!!Most of the boat men troll lures, flies or deadbaits, and on good days I've had 8 or 10 pike, and loads of decent perch.See you there sometime MarraRoger , Hows ta deurn lad?Bass Lake is a good place to start-its quiet so nobody can see you if you make a d*ck of yourself!!!Tickets are available from the Pheasant Inn. £6-00 per day or £68-50 for a season. 23. Hi Marra :D

No problem, good to see another yakker in gods county!!

No problems on Bassenthwaite as far as I know but I prefer Coniston as I have sussed where the pike are ha ha (Thanks to Nifty)

There is a guy who looks on this site now and again originally from St Bees and will be able to give you some good advice on that area (he may see this and reply)

I have had some nice Pollock from St Bees, close in around the rocks of the head so you should do well!. The surf can be problematic at St Bees getting in / out but calm settled weather is fine! I intend to hit Coniston and Windermere a fair bit this summer so if you wanna meet up then no problem (or indeed our coast line!!) Safety in numbers and all that

My pike fishing skills are limited but I have had some great instruction from another site user and am more than happy to pass it on!

You will be able to send Private Messages (PM's) after 15 / 16 posts, so keep posting questions and letting us know how you do to get the numbers in! (I will PM you my mobile!) Also if you are at all unsure about your first few paddles out than let me know and will see if I can make it up there (if I am off wuk!!) :yucky:

I was out Sat and Sunday and have a frezer full now mate  Corking weekend although am kerry packered now ha ha! Keep in touch and let us know how you do if you do get out!
