  1. peter, Well, I thought you were going to say take them back to the Artic and give the polar bears a second chance. Phone
  2. Barry, I didn't recognize the fish at all. I don't sea fish since I'm nearly a 1000 miles from any ocean. I looked at fishbase.org. Unbeknownst to me there are two distinctively different fish commonly called "red mullet" around the UK. Yours looks like the second one, Mullus surmuletus (maybe?). The other "red mullet" is Mullus barbatus barbatus . You have any idea? Anyway, nice photo and post. Congrats. Phone
  3. All, I don't think physics has changed my life near to the degree as a good physic. Phone
  4. All, I've been mulling this question over from the beginning of post #1. Very dangerous for Phone to mull. It seems "public waters" and "free waters" is intertwined in the responses. In the US we have no such thing as "free" waters ZERO. The execptions are as chesters stated; children; senior citizens, lads and lass' in active military service and maybe a couple I've missed. At a minimum State fishing licenses are mandatory and the cost varies widely. However, 99% of all freshwateris "public water" and is also Federally controlled in some fashion. (You may fish on your own land without license or permission if the water begins and ends on your land). Often there is an access fee at certain handy points to about any major venue where improvements have been made to waters edge (same as a day ticket I believe). This fee applies even for having a picnic without fishing. Such a fee can be assessed at the Federal, State or private level and/or all three expenses will/may apply. When you fish "whatever you're calling private water" do you have to have government permission (licenses) as well as a private membership? Is everyone elgible a majority of the time? What is this thread "bytching" about? Phone
  5. All, BISH, ain't near as fast as I can set a hook. Phone
  6. Colin, Our fav holiday is Thanksgiving. That's when we give thanks for slipping the King. Ohh wait?? That's the fourth of July. ?Maybe we are two fold happy. As for Xmas, I am like Ken, I sudder and tremble like a baby at the thought. I get the 'gift' that keeps on giving, - - - the bills. Phone
  7. Emma two, Not a wind up. We were using small "fish colored pudggy looking lures with a lip on them. I've seen them, or something similar a million times in the tackle shops but don't know exactly what to call them. The lip had a homemade (?) hairpin or sliding clip affair and the midge larva slid under it and trailed backwards toward the lure (does that make sense?). I'm not even sure the hairpin or clip was homemade(?). These fish, maybe eight or a dozen, were caught about 15 - 20 ft deep so the lure was either diving or sank of it's own. I'm afraid I wasn't the best of students or paying the best of attention. If there are specifics you would like to know just ask. If I remember I'll try (?). Time of year was early Oct. We were in a boat. Water was "coolish" although I don't know exactly how cool. I used a 5.5 ft UglyStik rod, spincast reel, 8 lb Trielene line. The midge larva look like and may be bloodworms. He always referred to them as "midge larva". Word was "perch were hot right now". I hired this really nice guy ($40 for 4 hrs, boat and bait) at the marina while I was biding my time waiting for another guy the next day to do some real fishing - carp! Phone Edit: Just thought, I guess for presentation it looked like the midge larva were or nearly were in the lure's mouth if it was a predator. I don't know what else to say? Ohh, I did think of something else to say. These were Yellow Perch and looked like the photos on AN of perch. I'm only assuming they are the same. Somone who's fished over here needs to confirm Yellow Perch and perch are the same fish.
  8. All, Once again, I am not a perch expert so I have a question. I have fished for perch with the help of an expert (guide) who used frozen midge larva (attached to the lure). Are you allowed to use midge larva (especially live)? He said he would not where I was fishing in NJ. Never knew exactly why. FWIW, they were, on average, two and a half - three pounds ea. Probably don't know how lucky I was do I? Phone
  9. Emma, I'm being lighthearted. I have no IDEA what this thread is about. Any post that begins "I Think" is probably art anyway. I would just like to say ice fishing does have a "season" - - - - don't you think? Phone Edit: corrected spelling
  10. Sportsman, should original posters have any say in the way that threads develop? - - - - - - - no should moderators be employed to manage off topic excursions? - - - - - - - - - - -no does it matter? - - - - - - - - - - - no I do think there is a bit of responsibility without ownership for post#1. To the extent he started the thread he has a say - but no ownership for the direction. "There's a train at 4:04," said Miss Jenny. "Four tickets I'll take; have you any?" Said the man at the door, "Not four for 4:04, For four for 4:04 is too many." Phone IMO two dimensions and "power of the pen" are the main culprit to "off topic".
  11. Newt It's also "impossible" if it is true. We only have to dispose of 40 - 50 nano seconds. That shouldn't be to difficult. Phone
  12. This isn't really non-fishing, it is about fishing. Just didn't know where else to ask the question. You do harvest sea fresh salmon don't you? I mean they are not a C&R species are they? Phone
  13. Elton, I took your advice to jasont and looked at the article offerings. "SNAG FISHING FOR CARP" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (gulp!!) This is the scariest title in the history of UK/European carp angling should an unsuspecting Yank read it. We do that you know? Snag carp (with a snagging hook). jasont, As a species common carp most often will FIRST select some combination of the attractant capsicum (often available as a hot sauce) and fishmeal (usually from powder of 70% protein if possible) which is their most natural instinctive food source. As for presentation, rod and reel, etc. I haven't a clue for what the watercraft on your lake(s) might be. Capsicum is most effective if only one angler is using it as it is a very long range attractant and carp can become confused it it is coming (available) from more than one direction. Phone BTW, the very best source of natural betaine is baby puke. I 100% PROMISE you will catch carp on any bait made with baby puke. And it doesn't take much. (I don't use the word "best" loosely). Betaine is rarely available in its natural state and never commercially. Edit: corrected spelling (I hope)
  14. Les's see? Two lbs even plus the tea cup or two of water I alway add (after zeroing the sling) for safety's sake would make that a loverly two and a quarter pounder if I caught it. Good fish!! Phone Emma, I know I know (and I'm the only noddy who doesn't know)
  15. Ken, Cool, and sorry for the thought. I admit, I'm a bit knee jerky right now from recent prior critics. Accept my appoligies for that is indeed what I was thinking - MY BAD Phone
  16. Androo, And to think I stuck my nose in here earlier. Seems like the only time you Englishmen are in unison is when a Yank interfers and comments. Can I help? Certainly this thread is "different" than the other one you notated. Phone Wish I could do smiley faces.
  17. davedave, Ha Ha - My mother said that also. Probably not. Phone
  18. Ken, My comment wasn't meant to be critical. Phone
  19. Androo, I, on the other hand, rarely have had occasion to fish a "pay" venue. All sound so weird? It is much more common to pay for "advice" in the form of a guide fishing for unfamiliar species or on unfamiliar venues. Phone If you accept government assistance in building, maintaining or stocking you must allow free public access. Even on private land. Most new ponds are built as part of some sort of "watershed" project to prevent erosion and are paid for by a majority from government funds.
  20. Watatoad, I see where you're coming from. Especially since I am an international guest on AN. I have to use the "view new post" feature then sort out the topics even withing "coarse fishing". Maybe the heading should be "of course fishing". Never-the-less Gozzer has a point. After all, "politics is "the practice of conducting political affairs" (in this case coarse fishing affairs). Phone
  21. Ken, Garmin's newest, latest greatest, will have satilite map viewing down to "X"? sq/yd (I forget, or never knew). Save your pennys. Cory, The "big boys" gotta be bigger than the US military then. Phone
  22. All, I have a novel idea. Since entitlements are so politically hot right now. Why not tell the hooligans they are entitled to apply for entry level jobs? How about this - - create entry level jobs equal to welfare income? Probably wouldn't work. I don't see why it has to be such a convoluted complex fix. There's not a child alive I would not take fishing - once. More if aptitude warranted. I'm not giving them my (collective) river, they don't know how to use it. Phone
