  1. after taking on board all the advise i can now say im pullin them in loads better, havent been loosing any off and the sound of my reel screaming for the first time was enough to make me almost **** me pants. went over to aldin grange yesterday in the **** rain, was there on me own all day and it was as if the fish knew none of the old blokes come out in the rain and the fish were taking everything, but the elk hair caddis was the pick of the day. could spot a fish come up, cast out to it and bang, fish on almost every time, best days fishing ive had in a long time. heres one from another day...cheers for the help fellas
  2. i was under the impression that the lighter rods where for smaller rivers. I have a 8lb tippet with 8 main line on a 7-8 rod so maybe its the big one just having me life and stealing all me good flies haha. Had a good one played for a few minutes and got it all the way to the bank to scare it with me net and it got off after all that. Gutted i was but ill keep trying. Whats the best place to buy flies from cause i need some more? I live in darlington, work in newcastle and in to durham a fags bit so im open to places. Cheers again
  3. being new to the fly rod ive had a few 6lbers or so and one 8 but ive heard the record for the lake is 16. Im wanting to know whats the best way to get them in. How long to play them and what not. I dont want to knacker the fish out so it dies when i get it in, if thats possible? Any help would be ideal as ive been loosing a fair few cause im not too sure how to play them. Cheers
  4. Well after lots of looking around i couldnt really find a instructor at my price range so i opted for aldin grange and had a 4 hour lesson with the old bloke called ronnie and caught one in me third hour. I had pretty much given up on catching anything and whack, i almost muckd me pants. Haha. The fight of a decent trout is now the best type me fishing ive ever had and that beats fishing for pollock spinning a lure. Since my first lesson ive been back three days on the run and hooked 4 fish, one being a 8 lber! Holy cow did i have the shakes after landing that one.haha Im cooking one of me catches tonight so im chuffed to bits. Trout fishing is now etched into me brain. I love the fact that you have minimal gear and you get to change places if its not fishing very well with ease. 99% fly fishing for me from now on. Cheers for the help fellas.
  5. ahh, im living at my nanas house in darlo at the minute, in redhall estate, its lovely, haha. im from durham originally. ive been up to aldin grange and had a chat with the old bloke who runs the fishing tackle shop, he said he does tuition so i was thinking about starting there. any ideas if this bloke knows a thing or two, or hes just getting some extra beer tokens? lol ill be honest im new to it, as in i just had a go today in a field casting my new rod and found it quite hard to keep a good rhythm up to get the line out further then say 45 foot, but then again i didnt have a fly on the end of me line. dont know how much of a difference that would make though, so yeah i think i need some lessons lol any people you know of that are good at teaching fly fishing? cheers for the info about the license, im glad to have cleared that up.
  6. im new to fly fishing and wanted to know if there was anyone of the forum that was from the area and could direct me to a few good spots. also if anyone knows of anyone who does tuition on the fine art of fly fishing as i seem to be in a bit over my head. who would have thought there was so much to fly fishing! im also going to lake garda in italy for my friends wedding and im making a bit of a holiday of it and by going for a week. ive read a few things about the rivers that flow into the lake being good for trout but other than that i cant seem to find out anymore. can someone clear up one more question for me regarding a fishing license for england, am i correct in thinking i need a separate license for fly fishing, one of my friends seems to think i need a gaming license? i have my normal fishing license. hope someone can help as im really keen on getting going with my new rod.
  7. aye. I thought it would be a good idea to get some tuition to get me pointing in the right direction so i found a bloke who does lessons and he seems keen so ill give that a go. I got a little money saved up and found a new tackle shop so i have bother nice old bloke help me out with choosing a rod. I ended up with a diawa lockmor rod for 40 pounds. After getting me reel, some greys line, backing line and the other last bit of line all put on it came to just over 65 pounds. Think ive done ok. Find out if its any good in a few days haha. Cheers for your help though
  8. im new to fly fishing and want to know what the craic is with rods and wot not, so here goes another one of those threads youve seen all to often. after going carp fishing with my dad in france its brought back memories from fishing for pollock in scotland, so i decided to pinch a few of me dads old rods and started on with the lakes and rivers course fishing. im getting bored of sitting round waiting for the bites and the float to bob and like the idea of being a bit more active with me fishing, similar to the memories i have of spinning for pollock. i mentioned to me dad that i wanted to get into fly fishing and he told me he had two rods, one his personal and expensive one which i clearly wasn't getting my hands on and my grandads old split cane A E rudge fly rod. now cause my grandads past away and im already using his other rods i dont feel the need to use this and want to keep it for very special days here and there so ive opted to buy a new set up. ill mainly be fishinging larger rivers, the river wear in durham, lakes and reservoirs. ive read a fair few of these "im new to this fly fishing" threads and wanted a bit more of an opinion on the rod ive got me eye on, the dawia true flight rod. i chose dawia cause from what i remember my grandad banged on about dawia like mad and i have his old dawia bag and i thought it be canny if they matched haha. is it still the same good quality as it used to be? going for the cheap and simple shakespear alpha large arbor reel. line wise i haven't a clue, all these gargets im guessing are tracers, i haven't really got a clue but i was going to ask in the local shop as their local knowledge may be of more use. if anyone has any info on the rod or dawia then im all ears, cheers
