  1. As a postscript to this now old post, went down to the lyne a few times last year, some decent brown trout exist, had a good one of 2lb 4oz end of august, never had a sniff from a sea trout, never heard of anybody catching any either. There is a stretch i know very well, ive fished it since i was little, the last school hollidays i had was 1975, i used to go down and see dozens of chub sunning themselves in the shallows, i used to catch them with bread crust, it was great fun, i used to keep a record of chub catches back then, i caught 97 chub between 1975 and 1982, it may not sound a lot to some of you but they were all over 3 and a half pounds, including 9 over 5 pounds, best 5lb 10oz in 1978, havent caught any chub since 1982 Best dace was 12oz also in 1978, havent caught one since let alone seen one. Back to the present, looking at part of the stretch i could see quite a few small brownies and every so often a small shoal of other fish mabye a dozen or so would swim through them, i think they are chub, so just mabye they are starting to make a comeback. Lots of fry in the river last year. Back in the day eels were very common, dont hear of many people catching them now, even flatties up my way, plus a small run of salmon wonder what 2011 will be like

Thanks for the reply Hopefully an 8 will do the trick
  3. If you can, drop into john norris at penrith, game shop i know but they should be able to tell you all you need to know, the eden is full of grayling , there are chub, perch and dace, though there isent as many dace as there used to be.
  4. The chub and dace went from our river years ago, coz somebody wanted it to be a posh trout fishery for the nobs, people around here call them skellys and consider them vermin, the trout aint doing too well either, and i havent seen any sea trout this year, unless they got sneaky, man interferes, so chub and dace will do for me, good british fish and no forign rubbish, look what they did with zander, mind you sticking some piranhas or asp in with the zander would make things interesting

Hi I have a shakespeare trion 9.5ft 7/8, i have existing 7 floating line, the rod dosent like it very much, i have read reports that they are exellent rods but the line rating is a little out, to save a lot of time and money with experimentation, does anybody have or know anybody with the same rod and what they run it with, i fish rivers for brown and sea trout and the odd shot for grayling Any clues would be appreciated
  6. You need local knowledge mate, and that would be me, the sark, like the esk, liddle, lyne, kirtle, annan, eden was one of those rivers back in the 1970's that would have the british record chub swimming in it, in the 60's a guy called jack cairns, who, was my english teacher at school caught 2 7lb chub in the kirtle which is next door to the sark and similar in size etc, like the other local rivers around here it suffered some problems in the 80's and 90's and the chub and dace almost dissapeared, personally i think a lot were electro fished out to please the posh trout angler, silly move as the trout havent done too well without them, the natural ecology and all that. There are chub and dace in the sark and its making a recovery I know the lyne better, ive lived beside it most of my life, in the 70's it was brilliant, brown trout, sea trout, salmon, chub, dace, eels , flounders and the odd grayling, it was match fished in the 70's, the lyne today is a shadow of its former self, being marketed off as a posh trout fishery, granted there a few good ones in there, but not as many as when the chub and dace were there, and believe it or not there was roach at the old railway bridge near westlinton on the lyne, i know guys that caught them, that was back in the day, you can make a fair comparison between the sark and the lyne to what has happened over the last 25 years. I saw a site with a map at westlinton it said chub, grayling, perch and gudgeon, i dont know where he got that info from, chub - yes, grayling - possible, perch and gudgeon, no chance. The sooner the ea restocks it with chub and dace the better, and mabye some grayling too and that goes for the other rivers around here
  7. A lot of trout fishermen and fisheries and locals in my area regard coarse fish as vermin, it means nothing to them to wipe them out, they dont understand the natural ecology of our waterways, they are only interested in trout and salmon, they like to catch them to eat. Its a great shame, but thats life.
  8. Many thanks fo that will give it a go
  9. I dont know if this is exactly the right part of the forum, but here goes I came to live near the river lyne in cumbria in 1968, i started to fish it in 1974, at that time the lyne had large stocks of brown trout, chub, dace, some grayling, the summer sea trout runs, the odd salmon, eels and flounders, it was hailed as one of the best chub rivers in the country, ive had 9 over 5lbs but none after 1982, and thats where the horror story starts, a huge food in the winter of 81/82 was the start in the mid eighties it was cyamag'd hard, and silage effluent got in, the chub and dace etc dissapeared, and were only left with trout and not many of them, people said it was cormerants, imagine cormerants with 4 and 5lb chub, er i dont think so, i think it was electro fished to remove the coarse fish, now the local still waters have chub in them, i wonder where they came from, so basically who ever did that has changed the river from the way god created it, narrow minded peeople that think that trout are the bee all and end all. They never think that the coarse fish actually help the trout stocks, and regard them as vermin because they cannot eat them, the dace would have been the natural target for cormerants because there was shuch a lot. We only wait for the sea trout nowadays, unlike back in the 70's when i used to see dozens of chub sunning themselves in the shallows, recent walks along the river show to me its pretty clean, with minnows showing. which leads me to the big question, i sent the ea an e mail with the same title 2 years ago and they were not really interested ,how can i get the enviroment agency to put back the chub, dace, grayling and turn the lyne back to how god made it Any suggestions would be appreciated
