That sounds like it could be just west of Latchford locks. There is a large steel railway bridge that crosses the canal there, it's quite a way up in the air mind so, if it is that bridge your mate would have to have good eyesight.
If your looking for underrated waters you may want to look at Pennington flash, it has bream over 10lb not seen very often as it's a damned big puddle. One was taken about two years ago reputed to be 15lb 10oz. Carp also reside in there and they be beasts, the trouble is no one seems able to pin them down to a specific area of the flash. The brook leading away from the flash is in the press regular for it's roach, possibly the best roach fishing in the country in winter. You can take fish over two pound every chuck when they're up for it and just below them are pike to 30lb. Not a bad water at all for a tenner a year.
