  1. I was in a boat one day when the reel (a borrowed one) dropped off the rod bounced on the edge of the boat and then sank out of sight, no problem just pull in the line and the reel will follow. But then he pulled in the last of the line all he was left with was the line end and no reel (that will teach him to put a secure knot on the line when first putting the line on).
  2. Supposed to be paying attention on a long conference call, suppliers going on and on about their problems .... yea yea yea Friday afternoon give me a break !!!!!!!
  3. Well thanks to everyone for all the replies, I guess I could give Salar's tin a go just to get me up and running, but the two dustbins sounds interesting Jeepster and I would appreciate those drawings when you get a chance (oh boy is she not going to be happy with biscuit tins and dustbins all over the back garden bad enough with hooks weights and rods all over the kitchen table). Jabee I agree with you about the boiled mackerel we were out of Ballycotton in east Cork 2 years ago when the skipper offered us boiled mackerel and we found much to our surprise how lovely it was, we fought over the last few scraps, maybe we were just hungry. 6. Can't blame a guy for trying, and you wouldn't have needed the vest as I could have organised the local gun club to escort you in and out of Limerick safely.
  7. Greg, I would have to get off my backside and build a pond in the garden first, unless you have a spare weekend to come down to Limerick and show me how its done ....
  8. I began sea fishing along the coast of Co. Clare. it was all to infrequent and all this time there was a small river running through my home town which held trout and I decided to give it a go and fly fishing appealed to me so I got a loan of a rod and reel off my brother-in-law and I spent ages training myself on the lawn
  9. OK ... So you have to pick 10 or 12 flies to do you for the full year, what do you pick???
  10. Have any of you lads read the new regulations in Ireland for licensing of sea fishing boats Whats in it as I haven't had a chance to read it yet myself ????? http://www.marine.gov.ie/display.asp?type=...7|361CB4|18F75D
  11. Have a look at this then http://www.nofishing.net/proactiv.html
  12. In July my 7yr old son caught his first mackerel off of the bridges of ross on the west coast of Clare up to that it had only been blenny's (or as we called them when we were young "cobblers") using small barbless hooks. He was using a 7ft rod and a fixed spool reel and trace of feathers cut down to just one hook, he seemed to have no problem with the casting, it was the height he was up which caused him a little concern. 14. How about "eve" (as in "adam and ")the slogan would read "It's the mother of all reels"
  15. Tuesday evening I took the opportunity to fish the local river (morning star), I took it into my head to go further up river than normal and I got my old man to drop me just 3 miles (by road) aprox further on. It was a lovely evening enjoying the fishing. 1/2 a mile along the river I spotted a number of trout rising in and around some over hanging trees. I spent much to long trying to tease one of them to take what I had to offer. next thing I knew it was getting dark and I had a hell of a long way to walk yet..... To make a long story short the 5 or 6 mile hike back (by twisty river) in the dark often through waist high grass and reeds gave me some grief (how fit am I). First a heavy fog came down blotting out anything more than 30 or 40 yards away. Being a little unsure of the lay of the land I ended up (thanks to brambles and barbed wire) with hands and arm that look like I was trying to fill a slot in a horror movie a fine rip in my net. I walked into an electric fence, got charged down by some mad cattle. Also I lost somewhere along the way a box of flies and a few other bits and pieces (probably in my own mini version of "Running with the bulls in Pamplona"). The next day the lads in work had a great laugh at the state of me and the story I had to tell and so I won't be doing that again .... Oh I will be going back there fishing again I just won't tell the lads in work about it.
  16. well done Alan great article, only once did I go fishing for skate, I spent 45 rod bending, back breaking, sweat pumping, blood draining minutes only for the line to eventually give up and break. I often talk about that afternoon but never took the opportunity to go back and have another go. I might..... just might have a rethink ......
  17. Thanks Leon for all that info (plus links). Now a little bit of reading to do (so long as the boss doesn't catch me).
  18. Any one in and around the Munster area, myself and a few lads are going for a day's sea fishing this Saturday . We have chartered a boat out of Ballycotton Co. Cork. There is one place left in the boat give me a shout if you are up for it. Make it fast, time is running out ........
  19. On Monday a couple of us went for a walk along a beach just outside Tralee Co. Kerry. On our way back to the caravan park we walked along a sandbar which had a small stream running along the back of it which came down from the hills nearby. When we came to cross the stream the tide was on the way in and the level of the stream had risen a foot and a half or so and rising... When we got across I noticed 3 guys fishing (spinning) but not catching anything. The father-in-law said that there were mullet in the stream when the tide was running in. I sat and watched the river for a while and sure enough there were fish in it and they were clearly taking something from the surface. What were do you thing they taking? What is used to catch these and has anyone tried to fly fish them (using what)....??? [ 06. August 2002, 01:21 PM: Message edited by: Lewis from Limerick ]
  20. Yes Alan, when I hear the outcome into the investigation I will let you know its findings. Yep how many time have we been out and the skipper lets you know that there are life jackets stowed away over there somewhere and nobody even goes to look to see where they are. We are due to go out of Ballycotton on the 10th of Aug, it will interesting to see the attitude of both the skipper and the lads fishing this time around. I would like to think it might have some positive effect. www.marine.gov.ie/ [ 31 July 2002, 02:20 PM: Message edited by: Lewis from Limerick ]
  21. I don't know if you are aware that at the weekend 5 anglers were drowned just a mile off the Wexford coast here in Ireland. A tragic loss ....... My condolences to all involved both family and friends. I was just wondering if anyone new if the boat that sank was a charter boat or not? It looks as if it was a faulty pump which caused the boat to sink.... It makes you think........ doesn't it.... [ 30 July 2002, 02:40 PM: Message edited by: Lewis from Limerick ]
  22. I have a son aged 7yrs and he caught his first mackerel a week and a half ago off the bridges of Ross on the Clare coast line. Now he is talking to me about going out fly fishing is he to young ????????? If so what is the ideal age to start fly fishing ??
  23. Well I was talking to one guy who we charter a boat with out of Kilrush and he told us only this week to leave it until the second half of August as he felt that the fishing was slow enough due to the water temp. But talking to two others (one in Ballycotton and one in Doonbeg just up the coast from Kilrush) and they both said that they were seeing improvements in catches. Then again its in their interest to tell us that and as always us fishermen are optimistic by nature anyway.
  24. Sounds great John S when can we expect this to start ?????
