  1. Lovely, brings back memories of fishing with my Dad and similar tackle, Clayton swing tips, Intrepid reels and aluminium maggot tins.
  2. I see it more for a 'Black Widow' and marbles, more stealthy!
  3. They don't turn to casters very easily............. Always found reds to freeze and thaw out more naturally than whites (which look most unappetising). I wonder why, maybe something in the red feed?
  4. This site may be off interest if looking for ideas.. http://www.defiantmps.com/indicators.htm

    Flow speed

You’re right, but I did say simplistically. The restrictions are similar, bath = floodplain, outlet =river channel, head pressure = depth above or below normal river level. Increase in pressure = increase in flow.

    Flow speed

Simplistically, is it not like an emptying bath tub where by the restriction of the outlet pipe (in a river the outlet through weir/ gates etc) controls the flow? There would be an increase of flow on a ‘rising’ level (leave the taps running !) due to an increase in head pressure.

    Dredging

Interesting comments and views from some experts, echoing what seems a commonsense opinion. http://www.sciencemediacentre.org/?p=22582&upm_export=print

    bioline

It’s got to be a step in the right direction. Any doubts about premature deterioration would be no greater than nicks or abrasions guiding us to change lines annually. Maybe in years to come line will be good for say two years, then start changing colour as it quickly breaks down within months.
  9. Wild looking place. Don’t suppose the world will end over one fish. I feed maggots to robins….
  10. I don’t see anyone playing a real role in protecting the coarse fish here. Game, now that’s totally different. A Judge who is a Salmon fisher make an amazing deterrent…
  11. Sound advice with the rubber band but for the an oldie with cold numb fingers I find it easier to us a wide red rubber band, cut the band to make one longer length, after impaling the worm pass the hook through one end of the band and cut the band off at required length. Mine end up around 4mm square, I can’t cope with fiddly bits all ready pre cut.
  12. Go to your local tackle shop, try and pick a quiet time and they should talk for ever !! Tell them you’re not buying today but want advice as to what to buy in the near future. Get the info and if unsure check back here.
  13. Same as you Dale, can’t see any reason why fish would be attracted to the commotion of repeatedly throwing a rake in. Yet I keep on reading of raking attracting Tench and catching as soon as a bait goes in. Never been brave enough to try though, only raked as a means to clear weed away then fished some time later (days). Also amazes me that ‘matchmen’ make so much noise with dumping gear down, setting up, shouting to each other and runners between pegs, yet still manage good catches….
  14. Ahh never, It just hasn't worked for me though, maybe I need to grow a beard.
  15. I guess, don't knock it till you try it !!
  16. Thanks for the info. hadn’t realised that it was a marketing company associated with the site. Hmm, could be fun making up a misspelled sentence and see where it takes me !!
  17. As a Luddite can someone tell me why there is a link on the word senario in the last sentence and what is skim words ?
  18. Recently over the hot weather period I’ve noticed groups of small fish, (Roach or Bream) hanging head down in the top layers of water. They don't seem stressed or in discomfort, more of a plaything or socialising, (hanging out together). Any thoughts on the reason why or purpose?
  19. Medwaygreen. “Please do not take that stupid article as a serious piece of journalism, “ I don’t, but it is in a national news paper and will be read and believed by thousands. “to castigate Kirisute about lead poisoning in relationship to shooters is plain indefensible “ You’re right. I didn’t read the last line which makes the paragraph humorous to some. Until then I took it as flippant. “please Google lead poisoning from diesel fuel London.” Diesel fuel does not contain lead, you may be thinking of carbon particulates and aromatic carcinogens. We need fuel and at the moment it’s a carbon based pollutant, we just have to keep improving it until an alternative widely available. “An outright ban on what, lead shoot that has not broken the law or the shooter that have, I think that in this country it is the person that breaks the law who is prosecuted and not the product”. There is NO reason to use lead shot, take away the ambiguity of regulations and just stop the production of a toxic shot being spread over the country side and water ways. Can’t follow your reasoning to your last comment, I think logically you stop the production of faulty or dangerous items rather than prosecuting the supplier or user. Which is very much the case with lead in petrol, lead water pipes, pesticides, chemicals and drugs etc. You cannot trust everyone to abide by restrictions of use, so when there is a perfectly good alternative, ban the toxic product, it’s a no brainer………. We seem to be drifting well away from fishing, so if the ‘mods’ allow this post you can have the last reply. Regards.
  20. Sorry there is nothing in this article of any substance to justify the use of lead shot and please don’t forget I am a shooter to. I’ll highlight a few of the misconception in the article, it would be tiresome to point them all out.. Risk of barrel exploding is no more or less than using lead, which is nearly nil chance in a half decent ‘proofed’ barrel. If it’s that old it’s less than half decent it should be scrapped. Quote “Mr Pierre White, a keen shooter, said: 'People have been shooting with lead for generations, why would you want to change it?” because it’s been found to be highly toxic that’s why, take your head out of the sand. Quote “it is also illegal to kill ducks and geese with lead shot. But the charity has conducted research on wild ducks on sale in Britain and found that almost half are being illicitly shot with lead” Point proved that the bans are failing. Jeezus you’d think they were trying to ban ‘shooting’. It’s just a sensible change from some toxic to something relatively safe. Kirisute You might want to google the effects of lead poisoning, the number of deaths and the mental problems associated with it, to realise what a serious problem it is. It takes an awful lot of muscle to move the motor industry and oil corporations to change to low lead fuel, it wasn’t easy and it was expensive. That muscle was medical evidence.
  21. Which could be used in my defence, I remember having lead water pipes in the house as a child. There shouldn’t be bans or regulations that can be twisted, ignored and defied, just make the production of lead ‘shot’ illegal. How much easier could it be ?
  22. Scattering lead shot all over the countryside is absolutely ludicrous in any guise. Stop the thinly veiled excuses of, expense, unclean kills, barrel damage. For pity’s sake just ban it. I appreciate Sportmans is only ‘telling it as it is’ but intense farming of any sort, be it ducks, chickens, or livestock can all suffer from the indirect contamination and the same threatens wildlife . Its like DTD in that what’s already there is dangerous and each year its added to, after a complete stop it will be a number of years before its effects dissipate. Anglers complied with the compulsory ban, shooters should have the same principle applied. I too rough shoot and wildfowl and I’m not anti blood sport just wanting to protect what little we do have left.
  23. Dale 'The catch reports highlight that two thirds of reported captures were in daylight', so my point is to illustrate that the study conclusion that (a) tench is a species with a strictly nocturnal behaviour” is totally flawed if applied to mature fish. From my own 24 and 48 hr. sessions, conveniently ! ! 60% of the Tench captures were in daylight. As for the tenchfishers I would guess a good percentage, maybe even a majority of their members are session men. As for the rest of the country, who knows? I’d like to think that ‘serious’ Tenchers would be savvy enough to go at the most productive times and not be led by assumption or speculation. Phone, Re The collation of 2/3 - 1/3 day and night. What would you say is the ratio of lines in the water day vs night? I’d guess, and that’s all it is, at 60% day light fishing within that club but a lot higher in the general fishing population though. It’s the explicit conclusions of ‘strictly nocturnal behaviour’ I have a problem with, not who determines the "nocturnal behaviour" or if It was first citated then observed.
