Any fish is just that a fish. They are a renewable resource as long as it's managed like other fisheries are. Media feeds the hysteria here in Massachusetts where great whites are spotted all the time. More seals more sharks. The commercial boys want to see more sharks to eat up the quickly growing seal colonies on Monamoy Island.

We have been having a good time with cod and other ground fish this year. Have been using my own home made jigs and they are doing great. Best haddock bait has been frozen uncooked and unpeeled 30 to a pound shrimp. No dogfish on the shrimp. See our stories here. Carp tourneys in Sept. Big one is the Bite Me Bait Co Carp Cup

Cod season opened 4/15/2010 here. got some pollock too.

Cod season opened April 15 and first trip we caught cod and pollock.

I have a double and took out the front seat. It allows me to carry more fishing stuff, including the cooler. Down side is it catches the wind more readily than a single. When we go on the ocean we keep the tides in mind going out with it and returning on the flow.

Cod fishing in the New England area is regulated for the aveage person like this. April till November 1, fish anywhere, you can keep only ten fish any weight but they must be 24 inches in length. After Nov. 1, you must only fish for cod within 3 miles of shore and each person can only keep two fish. But the total weight of the boat's catch cannot exceed 75 pounds. It may be restrictive but we catch our quota everytime out in the past few years since it has been in effect. My photographer Jimdogg with a nice eating sized fish. We got these fish in the last couple of weeks. WE agree that commercial fishermen waste too many fish. The by-catch as we call it.
