  1. Thats a roach i would be more than happy with. The grayling Arbocop showed with battle scars is I swear identical to the one I caught on friday! I would prefer mine was over 2lb though like that one. Best check my pic when I can upload it Yep its different! Think these are cormorant attack scars
  2. had our day down there today and the river is quite good but more coloured than you might think it would be after all the dry weather. Even so there were a lot of happy anglers. The strange thing is that around the small salmon hut it was corn that seemed to do the trick with the usual smaller grayling and the trout whilst maggots produced lots of salmon parr. It was a different story at the top end where 3 red maggots produced some very good fish. The very last swim produced a pb for me and another grayling of 1lb 13oz. The pb unfortunately will never have a known weight as it slipped to freedom before weighing but it was 3 or 4 inches longer than the smaller fish and a great deal thicker so probably a mid 2. All in all a good day with plenty of fish showing. Good luck to all going and i think you will have a good visit
  3. You may be ok on some river banks but I like to use a dog exercise ground spike with some rope tied to it and the other end tied to me in case I slip in. If you have ever tried to climb out of a river you will get a good idea why!
  4. On no account ever used unsoaked and uncooked chick peas or similar. They are particularly good at taking on flavours but small ones in natural flavour are sometimes good bait for big roach
  5. Yes of course that is so and I have accidentaly caught a good tench on floating crust but surely this thread is about how you would target them. I hope our friend Steve Burke will not mind me mentioning his name but he suggested recently it sometimes pays to zig rig for tench and bream in deep water if nothing is doing on the bottom and this of course will mean the bait can be at all knids of depths and still be picked up but generally my advice would still have to be to fish a well raked lake bed close to lillies or other vegetation and keep the presentation as fine as possible without risking tackle loss
  6. Whilst you will definitely succeed in cathing tench in daylight all my better specimens have come after dark right in a vegetation covered margin or close to lillies. Well balanced tackle presented in a way that would trick even a crucian seems to do well although in carp waters they will pick up boilies etc and not be shy at all. Best bait I have found so far is a good sized bit of paste made from special g groundbait or green koi swim stim pellets
  7. never used ham but bacon grill might be ok. Cheapest chopped pork and ham by miles is from Lidl and a damn fine barbel bait it is too!
  8. Depends whether you want a net head, the pole or both but dragon carp may be worth a try. Some makers like ABU make an all in one net and handle that folds down and when LIDL do fishing tackle they also have a good strong cheap folding net with pole that all fits into a short bag
  9. The only comparison I have is the twin tip barbel version I bought recently during my problems with Greys. I have had quite a few battles so far with the rod and it is faultless. At £70 it was good value too especially considering Greys want £40 per section to replace them and I needed at least 2 sections. If your carp rods have the same qualities as my rod you have a good deal going
  10. Nothing sounds bettern than a V8 especially running on blown nitromethane! Roughly 10 gallons to the mile rather than miles to the gallon
  11. I have averaged 44 MPG over the last 950 miles most of which have been travelling to and from work and the car has not been in 6th for long. Mapping has improved the MPG as well as the performance. My son's 2 wheel drive car with the same engine and box does around 50 MPG as does my Mondy 2.0 TDCi
  12. I think I am right in saying that perch have their hearts much closer to the throat than most fish which I think explains why they bleed when a hook goes in deep. All you can do is make the whole set up as sensitive as possible and that way bite indications are so much faster. An alternative which seems to go against that advice is something I do when I trot a worm down the river in the slacks for perch and that is to use a carp controller instead of a float. What seems to happen is the perch tugs away at the worm biting bits off until it reaches the bit with the hook in and when it does so it self hooks against the weight of the controller.
  13. He he definitely thirstier unless the Evo does at least 40 mpg. Doubt whether the Audi is as quick in a straight line either
  14. I have really enjoyed the banter on this one Scoobies are masters at 4WD and the new Elton fishing wagon should prove excellent if a little thirsty. My 4WD, an Audi A3 TDi Quattro that has been mapped on top of the huge amount of power it left the factory with is rapid on the road but more than a tad too low to the ground for anything more than a bowling green Glyn, I have to agree your wagon is excellent!
  15. Among my excessive stock I own one of those cheap shadowlanda reels but with a 6 inch drum there is only one sensible way to have the line and that is coming off the top oyherwise the line is at quite an angle to the butt ring. However for a normal 3 0r 4 inch reel I would prefer line coming from the bottom.
  16. Grrrrr I was really tempted to use bad language on the forum to express my sheer annoyance that I have to breath the same air as these lowlife scum. I would love to see them punished if caught by attaching about 50 hooks to nylon in various regions of their bodies and the other end to my dogs collar. I could then throw a ball for her and make her really pull on the lines! Does anyone have another idea how to treat these scrotes?
  17. Much depends on what else in the water is likely to compromise your line because neither bream or crucians will put much strain and the lighter the set up the better during daylight. make sujre most of all that the float has a fine sensitive tip, is well shotted and will go under effortlessly. If you can use a fast sinking flourocarbon so the line behind your float does not get time to float and pull your rig around in the wind or drift you will have a distinct advantage The most successful crucian session I had 5 over 2lb and all fell to soft pellet fished an inch over depth and very close in to the edge of the marginal shelf. I also fed hard pellets each time the fizzing began to slow down. I felt at the time I would have done even better for the crucians had it not been for the very welcome big tench that forced me to up the line strength as 3 of these were over 5lb. Oddly the disturbance caused by the tench did not seem to affect the feeding and bites adversely.
  18. I am lucky enough to have visited Dave and got a signed copy. The book is extra special to me as being local I am familiar with some of the areas mentioned. Dave if you are reading this the book is very good indeed and will entertain almost anyone not just anglers. Thankyou for taking the time to write it.
  19. There is no definitive answer to the question as much depends on thye type of river. One answer I prefer to give is keep it simple and I think I can achieve that without any problem. I am not so good with the pc and giving a diagram but hopefully my description will be enough. Firstly get a pack of Drennan Grippa Stops. Cut a 8 inch length of line of a fairly high breaking strain just for stiffness(I usually use 10lb for most of my river ledger) and lay it alongside your main line with the 2 ends together. Next join the lines by slipping them together through the wire loop that holds the Grippa Stops and pull a stop off the wire and over the lines. You should now have a tag of line attached to your mainline. Pull enough of the short bit of line back through the stop and tie an overhand knot in it this should now leave you with a good link emerging upwards on the mainline which you can pull up to the stopper. This will prevent tangles as the line is stiff enough to stay away from the mainline. next wet the mainline and slide the stopper up the line as far as you want it (I usually make this about 18 inches) and tie on your hook. The link line can now be looped to attach leads loop to loop if you wish and if you leave a long enough tag a drilled bullet can be slid on to it and be retained by the tag. Alternatively some shot can be pinched on to the link. Either way if you become snagged the link will pull free of the stopper and you have a fully adjustable ledger system. You can use the same idea with a swivel and hook length if you wish . Tensioning the line till resistance is felt ensures the fish has twice the length of the link to pull the bait before the weight is felt by which time the rod gets wrenched round
  20. Do you know what scottca the size of fish only matters to some of us and the sheer joy of catching is much more important to even more. I fish mainly for barbel in a place that has few of them and to increase the stealth and reduce being snagged I don't very often have a bare hook which means sometimes I get a huge wrap round bite but the fish does not get hooked. I simply can't tell you how pleasing it is to see a 1.5lb test rod hoop round in a 3 foot bend especially at night and the isotope is in place! Even nicer when the fish is connected but not always neccessary just like it is not neccessary to have a big fish to bring a grin to the face. The main thing is you caught a new species and it won't be the last one
  21. I think another reason for hair rigs is they almost always hook the fish in the lips and avoid deep hooking. Most deep hooking takes place when the line is too slack and the bite develops for too long before an angler strikes and with a properly set up hair rig system the fish hooks itself before the bait is taken too far down the mouth
  22. I still have some dragon carp stuff from way back when I simply could not afford much else. Things have changed and the carp rod is now a mackerel feather rod but absolutely fine so providing the quality has stayed at least as good I would go for it
  23. Never found a powder better than chinese five spice for covering meat
  24. Ooh wish it was simples like that where I fish!
  25. Just can't resist staying too late on the river, even the dog thinks I am a stranger but it is not my fault she injured herself and is not allowed out for walks
