  1. Spring here in East Central Florida means the return of coastal migratory fish species that have spent the winter further south on the eastern seaboard, waiting for rising water temperatures to signal their northward spring migration. Along the intracoastal waterway and the beach, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano, also bait fish Glass Minnows, Mullet, Pilchards and Sardines begin the annual cycle, swimming north in spring. Game fish striking bait on the surface make for great sight fishing, casting a lure, fly or bait right into the white water strikes can be an instant hookup, in spring , shrimp are also on the move here especially on a dropping tide in the morning and nighttime. Resident fish also become more active with warming water and more food, Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Black Drum and others, recently Ella was out with me along with her family, catching many different species including a few nice Black Drum ………………. Kristin from Alaska was out again with me throwing the fly, catching several species in the backcountry, including a few fun Ladyfish, spring can be good for flyfishing here with the schooling gamefish and surface activity …… FUN FRIENDLY LIGHT TACKLE FISHING ADVENTURES Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Backcountry and Flats Fishing CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES Near Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Orlando, East Central Florida CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 See my website https://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com Capt. 2. Winter fishing patterns are only around for a couple months here in East Central Florida, water temperatures drop in December, the fish and wildlife settle in for winter after all year of warm Florida, most fish school up together into bigger congregations in the deeper channels and holes, on a cloudy chilly day, some of the fish stay deep where to water temp stays stable, on a sunny winter day, some of the fish will come shallower, some up to the fringes of the deep spots, on the lagoon schools of Reds, Trout, Drum, Mullet go on to the flats where sun shine raises water temps a few degrees. Our inshore intracoastal water is the clearest of the year in winter, with visibility of 5 feet or even more during cold periods. Seeing the bottom here in many feet of water allows for learning whats down there as the water is more cloudy most all of the year. Redfish and Black Drum are a couple of our usual winter catches, young Everett here visiting from Texas on a family trip with me recently caught and released the best Drum of the trip ………… Nate from New Jersey with another fun size Black Drum on a recent trip, lots of other different species always caught on my variety mixed bag backcountry trips …………... 3. Florida winter is knocking at the door, cool fronts finally getting this far south, nice cool mornings, water temperatures creeping downward, with the prevailing north east winds in the fall, our intracoastal waterway is at flood levels with nice clean ocean water filtering in for weeks now. Cool water fish as starting to appear on the hook, Sheepshead and Bluefish, rarely caught in summer are usual catches during the cool half of the year. Mosquito Lagoon seagrass beds have been regrowing themselves after an absence of several years following chronic algae blooms of years past, giving a better opportunity again for grass flat sight fishing primarily for Redfish and Seatrout. On a recent scouting trip onto the Lagoon grass flats we caught a few Redfish, here me with the best one close to 30” before photo and release …………… My usual backcountry variety mixed bag trips see lots of different species on most every trip, the usual catches include Seatrout, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Mangrove Snapper, Whiting and always others too, here Jim with a fun little Snook ………... 5. Summer 2023 is winding down in August, school starts again, summer vacation season ends, the intracoastal waterway gets quieter with less boats, fall is right around the corner. Changes will take place in the water too, temps will not drop for a month or two yet, but baitfish , mullet and pilchard schools are thick, the beach run of mullet starts to migrate south by months end, along with inshore migratory gamefish, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, big fall Ladyfish, also Tarpon and Pompano schools passing along the coast heading south. 6. Summer 2023 is in full bloom, lots of variety is the normal here in the backcountry and Intracoastal Waterway at New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon, catching is most active in early mornings as normal for summer, lots of schools of bait fish throughout the area. Fish in the backwaters become more scattered in summer, some on shallower drop offs and channels, as well as in the deeper spots. Along the drop offs can be Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper, Redfish, Snook also Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish, along the bottom more likely Black Drum, Whiting, Silver Trout and others. In summer can always have surprise fish come aboard, I’ve had fish like small size Bonefish, Permit, baby Cobia, Cutlassfish, Scorpionfish caught as a surprise not expecting them to be in this area usually. Black Drum are however one of the usual catches here James from Daytona with a nice Drum ………….. Spotted Seatrout are always a welcomed catch in our inshore saltwaters here in East Central Florida, Tom from South Carolina caught several recently out with me on the lagoon …………. Adrian and family here all the way from Oregon went fishing with me, had a great time catching many species including a nice Black Drum we released to swim off and hopefully make more Drum for next time ……………. Some fish in the upper water levels like Seatrout, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, others along the bottom and close to structure like Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper, Snook, Redfish, Whiting and others. 8. It will be summer fishing before we know it here in East Central Florida, water is warming after a fun spring of backcountry saltwater catching here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. Summer patterns come in gradually over a month or two as spring comes to an end, open water game fish scatter out through the intracoastal waterway after the schooling pattern ends, fun Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish are widespread and regular rod benders through the summer. Bottom fish on the regular catch list include Whiting Pompano, Black Drum and more, Seatrout, Redfish and Snook are always a possibility too in the backwaters. Surprise fish are a usual event on some trips, like this “small” Tarpon recently, hooked, many jumps, and a quick Photo, Release for Bronson ………….. Black Drum are lurking on the bottom in the backwaters, along channels, in holes and off drop offs, they love shrimp so our usual choice of bait is just right, Jason here visiting from Oregon with a nice one before releasing ………… Jack Crevalle are a staple for fun catching, hard fighters, not picky on bait or lures make them one of my favorites for clients catching, Bob from New York with a good size one …………….. 9. 10. Spring is knocking at the door with fishing patterns here in East Central Florida on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. As the water slowly warms in the late winter jump starts baitfish and gamefish migration back to the north after wintering further south. Bait like glass minnows, mullet and pilchards included and game fish being Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel. Our year round resident fish like Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Black Drum, Mangrove Snapper and others also become more active with rising water temps. Surface activity also increases after a winter of most sea life hugging the bottom, add the spring shrimp run in the mix for more fish food, available live bait and surface attacks by the game fish makes spring one of my favorite seasons for local fishing. Long time regular clients from Ohio out with me recently, Carter with one of the fun Black Drum he caught and released ………….. Brent from Minnesota here for a winter Florida visit fished small lures slow and along the bottom catching Redfish and Seatrout …………. 11. Winter 2023 is upon us here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon, water temperatures dropping into chilly winter levels with clearing water clarity, fish congregating into the holes when chilly and coming on the flats during sun shiny days. Winter fish like Sheepshead and Bluefish now common catches for a few months, Redfish, Black Drum, Seatrout and Snook gather together into their winter patterns. With clear water we go stealthy with light rigs and smaller size baits and lures, fish are eating a smaller meal during the winter months. Bluefish like a quick flashy small size lure, when encountering schools, are lots of fun with aggressive Blues. Still some Spotted Seatrout around like this nice one Jeff from New Jersey caught recently ………………. We regularly catch surprise fish in the backcountry, this time was a couple Permit like this one by long time regular client Chris from Orlando ……………. Black Drum are a regular rod bender here in Edgewater backwaters, most are modest size up to about 5 lbs or so, hanging in holes and along channel bottoms, Matt from Indiana with a fun Drum ……………... 12. Autumn 2022 is arriving in East Central Florida with east breezes, migrating mullet schools along the beach and into the Intracoastal Waterway, mornings are feeling a little cooler as summer comes to an end, schooling inshore gamefish are returning from up north after spending the summer in cooler waters up the coast, Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano to name a few. The ICW water level has been rising with the east winds after low water levels most of the summer, the influx of ocean water filtering into the system will also begin the clearing process, with clearer water during our cooler time of year. The northern Mosquito Lagoon backcountry is known for it’s variety of different saltwater fish species, is a nursery estuary, lots of fish living their first couple years growing up with some species going to the ocean as they mature into adults. Local resident Guy and brother were out with me recently catching a good mixed bag of species including Mangrove Snapper, Bluefish, a couple Snook, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and a good size Black Drum giving a fun battle on light tackle ……………. Some better size Jack Crevalle as well as schooling smaller sized ones are a normal fish widespread throughout the Intracoastal Waterway region in the fall of the year, they chase baitfish and shrimp right up to the surface putting on a good show with sight casting opportunities as they show themselves attacking with white water splashes, Stephanie from Maryland and her son caught a bunch of them, here showing off a good one …………… Had a fun Fly Fishing charter with Payton from Tennessee, a few backwaters species caught on fly, including a few fun jumping Ladyfish, some of which were surface attacking baitfish giving us sight fishing and catching …………. 13. Summer time variety fishing in the backcountry here on the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon at New Smyrna Beach has been very active, lots of species are scattered through the backcountry during the summer inshore saltwater fishing pattern. Lots of baitfish and shrimp are through out the intracoastal waterway, schooling mullet, pilchards and menhaden are all widespread, during the morning they come to the surface, mullet pushing along the oyster bars and edges, the pogys and greenies hover under the surface in moving water and over top of deeper holes. Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish bust free swimming shrimp on the surface along the channels making for sight fishing possibilities. Always a chance at Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Snapper, Whiting, Flounder and lots of other types. Rolling Tarpon are a summer staple along the main channel and in the backwaters, they are notorious for having lock jaw for baits on the end of a line, but they do occasionally strike. Nick from Michigan had the charmed bite on this beautiful Silver King that stayed hooked through the fight and several jumps, into the net, and a quick photo before release and he swam away strong ……………… Black Drum are one of our favorite quality fish here, roaming along the bottom of deeper channels and holes and sometimes on the flats looking for a shrimp or crab meal, John visiting from Connecticut caught a few along with this good Drum of about 5 lbs. ……………… FUN FRIENDLY LIGHT TACKLE FISHING ADVENTURES Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon Backcountry and Flats Fishing CHILDREN ALWAYS WELCOME – FAIR PRICES Near Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Orlando, East Central Florida CALL OR TEXT ME ANYTIME 386-689-3781 See my website https://EdgewaterRiverGuide.com Capt. 16. Spring 2022 has arrived to the intracoastal waterway here at New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon Florida, water temperature on the rise, bait fish and game fish moving back north through our area after a winter down south. Jack Crevalle, Bluefish, Ladyfish, Pompano, Spanish Mackerel are some of the coastal migratory fish which travel the east coast of Florida, heading back north in spring. Resident fish like Spotted Seatrout, Snook, Redfish, Black Drum and others also like the rising water temperatures in spring, the variety of species we catch always increases after winter ends. Spring is also our time the shrimp come through the area waterway, and they are the main bait for all species of fish. 17. Temperatures have been up and down this winter of 2022, early season chilly, middle winter warm to mild, and now chilly again, water temps in the backwaters between upper 50’sF and 70’F, as the winter has turned colder again, water clarity has improved with nice clear water, winter pattern has some fish down into certain deeper holes, and Redfish, Seatrout up on the flats on nice blue bird sunny days as the shallow water gets that sunshine. In the backcountry Bluefish schools are hanging on drop offs and points with a good tidal current flow, these are really fun with a hard fight on light tackle, they will take most any bait also small lures. Black Drum and Sheepshead are always winter catches here on the Mosquito Lagoon part of the Indian River, shrimp or crab is their main food, bottom for Drum, structure for Sheeps. Young Thurston from Orlando had a great battle catching a good Black Drum out of the wind up against the Mangroves in a backwaters hole …………….. 18. Cold fronts are finally reaching us here in East Central Florida at New Smyrna Beach, some cool nights into the 50’s, still waiting for some colder temperatures which will drop our water temps as we move towards winter, the dry season will lower water levels which still remain high after the long rainy summer, clarity will also improve with lower temps. The upcoming winter fishing pattern will concentrate fish after the scattered fish patterns of warm water. Sheepshead and Bluefish will show up into the backcountry and will become every day catches again. Sheepshead eat shellfish so shrimp and crabs to catch them, Bluefish eat anything that swims, so small baitfish, shrimp, and small lures will have the toothy Blues attacking. Also in winter pattern we will catch Redfish, Black Drum, Snook, Pompano and Whiting to name a few. Long time Iowa repeat client Bonnie recently caught and released this 30” Redfish, it had to have her live shrimp on her very first cast of the trip …………….. Inshore game fish will be on swimming south also, eating the mullet as they go, schools of fun surface game fish like Jack Crevalle, Bluefish and Ladyfish hit the mullet on top, making for easy to see surface activity to cast lure or bait into for a fast hookup and drag pull. These fish are migrating south down the coast in fall after summering up north, they will winter in south Florida. Our resident fish which are here year round will be feeding on mullet and shrimp also, Snook, Seatrout, Black Drum, Whiting, Redfish, just some of the other usual catches in the Mosquito Lagoon backcountry. 21. Schools out and summer 2021 is here, warm water, beautiful mornings with cool air for an hour or 2 before it warms up for the day, the summer pattern for fishing is usually a better bite earlier in the morning and slowing as the sun gets higher in the sky, catching more different species this time of year in the backwaters of East Central Florida, including Pompano and Permit, Lane and Mutton Snapper, Silver Trout and Weakfish, are some the fish we catch here in summer that are not here other times of year. All the resident year round here too, Seatrout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and others. Best summer baits in the backcountry for variety catching, shrimp, live bait fish, and small lures, some fish feed on the surface early but most go deep as the sun gets higher. 22. Summer 2021 is arriving on the water here in East Central Florida, water temperatures have risen into the mid 70’s, summer baitfish like mullet are arriving, warm water fish species starting to be caught, morning surface activity with gamefish hitting bait and shrimp early morning making for fun sight catching, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish and Bluefish can be instantly hooked after casting into the white water attacks. With summer’s warmer weather, earlier morning starts are best with fish feeding at sunrise and usually slowing down during middle day. Black Drum are one of our usual target fish in the backcountry here at Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach, found on the bottom of deeper channels and holes looking for shrimp and crabs, also a few Redfish, Seatrout, and Snook will pick up our baits. Repeat father and daughter clients from Atlanta were out with me again recently on a good catching trip, young Kiya caught several good fish, including this great size Redfish we did a Photo and Release ……………… ……….we also got a few good Black Drum, dad Sam with one of them before it’s release for future breeding and catching ………………… Another long time repeat client Ralph from New Smyrna out with his son who was visiting from up north caught some good ones like this fun Redfish ………….. ………..and also an unusual catch for these waters, Ralph with a hard fighting Permit …………… Benito from Orlando, also a long time regular with me caught a very nice Black Drum ……………... 23. Spring has sprung here in East Central Florida, plenty of 80’ days, but still with cool mornings, our water temperatures have been swinging between the mid 60’s and mid 70’s the last few weeks as we transition away from winter. Schooling baitfish and inshore gamefish is the usual pattern for early spring here, they have spent the winter further south and now swim north following the rising sea temperature. Baitfish as glass minnows, mullet and pilchards, game fish on their tail as Bluefish, Jack Crevalle and Ladyfish. Local resident fish as in Seatrout, Black Drum, Redfish, Snook and others start moving about and looking for food more as the temperatures rise after a winter of chilly water temps as low as the lower 50’s this year. It has been a bit of a pendulum swing through the transition, with warm periods then chilly once again, water temps shifting 10 plus degrees from one week to the next, but as calendar spring arrives now the warm pattern will set in in to stay for the rest of the year till next winter. Black Drum have been one of the more consistent good rod benders, lots of little ones 1 to 2 lbs. up to good back waters size of 5 to 8 lbs. Long time regular client Matt from Ormond Beach Florida caught a few good ones on his recent trip with his dad Dr Ed ………………. Another long time regular client Darin from Kansas City caught a good backcountry Drum along with many other species along the way fishing the winter holes ……………….. ………….including a fun size Redfish off a back water drop off ……………….. ………. Darin’s fishing partner Steve also shows off a good Drum, one of several they caught on this afternoon charter ……………. Another fun size little Redfish caught by Cassidy here from Denver Colorado out on a family charter ……………. Jack Crevalle are always a rod bending chance here in our intracoastal waterway backcountry, not as many in winter, but with springs arrival are always plenty of hard pulling Jacks ……………. 24. We have had a nice chilly winter so far in East Central Florida, as the water temperature dropped into the 50’s F, the water became very clear, is great to see down into the water 6 feet deep showing the drop offs and holes. Our winter cold water pattern is a bit different than the rest of the year, fish can be concentrated more, both in deep spots, and also on shallow flats which are warmed by sun shine. Down in the winter holes can be Sheepshead, Black Drum, Seatrout, Mangrove Snapper and others, in the shallows can be Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, can also catch fish on the drop offs, in winter, schooling Bluefish can be near deeper water with tidal currents. Black Drum are a usual target fish in the Mosquito Lagoon backwaters, most are small to medium size as far as Drum go, first time client Georgia out with her husband caught some fun size Black Drum out with me ………….. Kimberley from South Carolina also got a nice size Drum out of a deeper hole on a recent trip into the backcountry …………… You never know when a surprise catch will come to the boat, this time Chris from Asheville, North Carolina was catching a couple Pompano when a pomp cousin bent his rod and turned into a nice Permit ………….. Joey from Pennsylvania got a kick out of catching a fun little Shovelnose Hammerhead Shark, a good battle on my little backwaters spinning rod …………….. Not many Jack Crevalle are here in winter as they move further south once the water gets cold, big schools of them will return in spring as the northward migration begins with warming water, but a few are here even in winter, Jon from Indianapolis with a fun size Crevalle ……………. 25. Winter has set in with the first cold snap of the season in East Central Florida, frost on my yard is a sure sign, water temperatures reaching down into the 50’s begins the true winter pattern. Fish be come less scattered and more concentrated, some in the deeper holes and channels, some on the flats when the sun shines and warms the shallow water. Searching skinny water for Redfish and Seatrout is a winter favorite here at Mosquito Lagoon, the holes, sloughs and channels can hold Black drum, Sheepshead, Whiting, and more. If it doesn’t get too cold, the Snook will continue to feed also on drop offs and close to structure in the back country. Clearer water means lighter stealthy rigs to hide it from the target fish. A few days ago Jeff from Kentucky out with me on a nice size Black Drum caught off the bottom of a deep cold water hole ……………. We can at any time catch surprise fish in the back waters, at times can be Sharks, uncommon species of Snapper, we’ve even caught a few Bonefish on my boat in the last few years, one surprise species that we’ve caught quite a few of now days are Permit, normally a tropical species now being caught here and there up here closer to north Florida, here I’m modeling one caught recently by a client ………….. Black Drum are one of the regular catches of good quality fish here in the back country, any where in size from baby 1 lb. fish up to at 10 lbs on occasion, here Beau from Osteen Florida with a fun one ………… Long time regular client Bonnie from Iowa always seem to catch a photo fish or 2 on their annual trip, a fun fighting size Jack Crevalle in this pic …………. Cheryl from Wisconsin with another good Black Drum, always a good battle on the light tackle I used for back waters trips …………..
