  1. On a hunch I think it brings eels in, as when using it I have caught eels when previously that day before feeding it I did not. Can't say I've noticed any difference in catches though, but I haven't been using it long enough to say. Bit worrying when you lot say you think it actually works against you though! I was planning to freeze some red maggot and feed dead red maggots with predator plus over them at the weekend on the canal, maybe I won't now
  2. Didn't want to start another post, but has anybody tried the NGT scales? They're only cheapo but I don't want to spend a fortune and I've got some NGT stuff that's actually good stuff. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FISHING-TACKLE-50LB-WEIGHING-SCALES-WITH-TAPE-MEASURE-FREE-POSTAGE-/250994555520?pt=UK_SportingGoods_FishingAcces_RL&hash=item3a7070fa80

    Yikes

Went in today and came out £45 quid lighter!
  4. Just goes to show that the internet isn't always cheaper, the Leeda whip was £7 cheaper in my tackle shop, and I can use it now. I decided on the 4m version as I think it'll be better to fish to hand. Dave
  5. Thanks for the reply Rudd. No I haven't considered a margin pole, this is all a bit new to me. However it would be for speed fishing and I would have thought a whip would be quicker? Would a margin pole be heavy Rudd? Thanks
  6. Thanks anderoo. I'm going to be cheeky now, but I've got to ask it, gun to head what would you put the weight at? Sorry to ask it's bugging me though, I know I can't class it as a pb, i'll just have to catch a bigger one this weekend and weigh it
  7. Cheers for the heads up, it's 60p a tin in asda, I'm no cheapskate but I thought that was a bit dear seeing as Tesco's own is 33p for a tin of the same size!
  8. Evening, I want to buy an elasticated whip for fishing for roach, Rudd, perch and skimmers on Stillwater's. I've been looking on the bay, and seen two that take my fancy, one is £17, and one is £27. Leeda 5.5m elasticated whip, comes with 2 elasticated top kits and a rig and disgorger: £27 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Leeda-5-5m-Telescopic-Whip-Plus-Pre-elasticated-ready-to-fish-/290824935724?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Fishing_FishingRods_EH&hash=item43b684592c This whip comes with two elasticated top kits, and Leeda is recognised as a good make, however it doesn't say which size elastic it comes with and is £10 dearer and 0.5m shorter than the NGT whip. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NGT 6m number 6-8 elasticated whip, comes with a free rig: £17 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NGT-6m-Intrepid-Telescopic-Fishing-Pole-Whip-complete-with-elastic-and-float-rig-/290870776479?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Fishing_FishingRods_EH&hash=item43b93fd29f I have a quiver from NGT and it's a great bit of kit so I have no qualms over the quality of this product, it is longer than the Leeda whip, £10 cheaper and I know what number elastic it has whereas the Leeda whip does not say. However this whip only has one elasticated top kit but the Leeda has two. I don't own a pole and only have a cheap un-elasticated whip so it's really to see if buying a pole would be something i'd use/enjoy, but I don't want to spend megabucks and all the kit you need for pole fishing. Going back to the whips though I don't want to buy tat as I've gone for the cheaper option before and been disappointed. I'd appreciate if any match fishermen or people that do a lot of whip/pole fishing could point me in the right direction in which i'd be better off with, or neither if that's the case. Thanks
  9. Yes your right steve, as I don't know for sure I suppose I have to count it as unknown. Hopefully soon i'll get one bigger and weigh it so i'll know for sure. Thanks Steve, appreciated.
  10. Thanks Chris, I will look into buying a set of scales
  11. Most the time I strike before a fish takes line. When carp fishing it will sometimes take a bit of line but only as the bobbin is close to the rod and carp bites are typically quite violent and it can take a second or two to get to the rod anyway. When perch fishing I fish with a long drop with my banksticks up as high as they will go and although I put my clutch on very light just in case I don't get there in time I always strike at about halfway up as if the perch takes line it will feel the change in resistance and nearly always drop it.
  12. On my local river the perch get caught in the faster stretches and never in the slower stretches, still haven't worked out why! Very peculiar
  13. You'll always have people selling things that people don't need and you'll always have people stupid enough to buy it.
  14. Cheers anderoo, I am looking at buying a pair of scales, something I've never really carried. Thanks phone, like you say i'll never truly know, I don't know of any such formula but there may be one.
  15. Evening all, I've had a great weekend fishing two waters I've neglected for a while but should fish more often. I've had my first carp, bream and tench of the year all this weekend, and possibly broken my perch record by mistake. Today I fished a lovely water with a nice bed of lilies coming up in front of me. I fished a waggler on bottom with redworm for bait, not fishing for anything in particular but I had a great morning catching perch and tench to about 10oz when at around midday I had a bite which felt like one of the few carp in the lake. It shot into the lilies and it all went solid, I gave it a minute then let some line off and began to pull for a break when it started to kick again. I was convinced it was a carp or even a tench but I couldn't believe it when I saw it was a perch. I slipped the net under it and placed him on the mat. I think I've broke my PB of 2lb 2oz but I had no scales so I'm not sure. Todays fish: My 2lb 2oz: What do you think? I'm wondering whether to fish tomorrow or just to have a lie in and sort a few bits out. Hope everyone had a good weekends fishing
  16. I've often tried small spinners on the water I've fished, and had no bites at all. A lot of people I've spoken to have also had no luck, however a small minority seem to have had some nice fish. I can't seem to be able to buy small rubber lures in the tackle shop and I'm not keen on the ones on the net, I have tried small spinners but lobworms and deadbaits have always been more successful. I find I get more bites/fish on lobworms but I have problems with 'nuisance' fish, however small fresh roach deadbaits give you one or two bites a day if your lucky, however the bites are decent and the fish are a better size. Prawns I only have chub. Maybe I should try harder to get hold of some small rubber lures
  17. Interesting answers, a lot of people going for the lobworm choice, do you not find you get pestered by other species? Ie today I had an eel of about half a pound, the first this year, this probably means i'll have to start using deads from now on as the eels can just be a nightmare. Dave
  18. Evening all, just a quick post out of curiosity, what have you found to be the most successful perch bait? My biggest perch (2lb2oz) fell to lobworm, my second (1lb7oz) to deadbait and my third biggest (1lb3oz) to lobworm. I've never used live's out of personal opinion, lures I've never had anything on, and prawns I've only ever had chub! Although dead's do have their day, and are especially useful in the summer months when small eels can be a nightmare, I do think the humble lobworm on a size 6 is hard to beat. How about you? Cheers

  20. I recently spoke to an angler who has been fishing a club ticket water that I am considering joining. He was saying how he's got a small number of fish called pumpkin seed fish. I just googled it and sure enough the pictures are of a fish that he described to me. Now i'd never heard of this species, let alone caught one or seen one caught. I'm pretty positive that the waters I am currently fishing don't contain any. Has anybody caught these? Do they grow very big? Are they common? I am assuming that they are non-native, I don't know whether they are fish that are released from aqariums or not but any information would be appreciated http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=pumpkin+fish&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45175338,d.d2k&biw=1242&bih=591&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=uExsUYSkIvTL0AW49YDIDQ#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&q=pumpkinseed+fish&spell=1&sa=X&ei=xExsUYb0FsKM0AXWgoHIDQ&ved=0CEwQvwUoAA&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45175338,d.d2k&fp=2d2acc93fac3b4e7&biw=1242&bih=591 Thanks, Dave
  21. Couldn't have put it better myself. In my opinion, his fishery, his rules, all this emphasis on education and different cultures, well education (what education, do they run classes on how not to poach?) doesn't work, and as to different cultures, I'm sorry but we shouldn't have to accept their culture, they should have to accept ours. If he has problems with eastern Europeans poaching then why shouldn't he ban them, it's his livelihood, and it's obviously not all EE's, however the other EE's that aren't a part of it should give the ones that are a clip round the ear because they are giving all of them a bad name, but it doesn't happen, so a blanket ban is the only solution to stop this man losing his livelihood.
