  1. The EA Hampshire Avon weed cutting was carried out to benefit the farmers in 'drying out' the natural Water Meadows in summer along the Avon Valley for commercial gain. At the time, they were being paid by the EU £300 a hectare (as compensation) to leave them wet/damp as Natural Water Meadows should be, and aid a recovery of the Avon Valley and its natural and migratory species. However, the EA seemingly helped them get both...their cake and then ate the cherry on top as well; this at the expense of destroying the river SSSI/SAC in preference to satisfying the farmers interests! As one knows, adult Salmon do not supposedly feed in fresh water when on their way upstream to spawn; therefore the weed growth only provides cover and sanctuary from predators and salmon anglers! Sorry, but some EA/NE consented salmon angling syndicates are hell bent on destroying and dredging the river habitat and vital sanctuary and Ranunculus weed growth and underwater obstructions to expose the Salmon to open areas and easy fishing where they are more easily spotted, stalked and caught. This is also 'ignorantly at the expense of destroying the coarse fish necessary habitat and other wildfowl, wildlife inhabitants environment, established macro invertebrate colonies etc., that do rely on the weed growth and the undisturbed gravels for survival. However, any surviving hatched salmon parr, do feed in fresh water and so the sanctuary weed growth/cover and macro invertebrates etc. are essential to their continued survival before returning to the sea. 2. A friend of mine is having problems on the Kentish Stour similar to what I experienced on the Hampshire Avon regarding destructive EA Mechanical Weed Cutting. Although the EA have 'generally' ceased down here, they have not totally, or elsewhere, and they are still issuing consents and exemptions to others to continue the damaging practice. If you think that Kayaks and canoes damage an SSSI/SAC and non-protected river habitat, then you need to see what the Environment Agency and Natural England and others do to our rivers! As most have never seen this happening, I have put together some video footage on 'You Tube' to publicise the carnage and give you an insight and to show what can and does happen. The first part of the vid is 18+ minutes and best played through headphones and larger frame to get the full effect. It is best to watch 'direct' at You Tube as it plays better and runs freely. I am sure they would not want anyone to see this footage! Here is the link – Best Regards..Ray Walton

  4. It has become evident that the EA have been out Electrofishing in the last month when certain species such as barbel and chub etc have been ready to spawn, spawning or have just spawned. In some areas, they have unwittingly or deliberately electro fished over the critical spawning grounds and fish on them! Surely the EA must realise that serious damage can be caused to fish individuals, populations and recruitment by undertaking this 'species counting' exercise at this crucial time of year. Idiots or F*in Idiots....Ray
  5. john-d...You have PM...Ray
  6. Interestingly, on the Hampshire Avon, the EA have built an eel pass into the Gt Weir at Christchurch to help the eels get upstream....Yet they have given a licence/s to an eel trapper to place at least 5 Fyke nets just upstream of the pass!...Ray
  7. Here is a model letter that i have copied below for you to send to the E.A. You can scroll, copy and print it off. Change and add to it, to personalise it as much as possible, and make sure you ask for a response. If and when you get one, write back again and enter into a debate. Let the guy know how strongly you feel about it. Put your name and address and seek a reply which is important...Ray If you want more ideas, then the full UOFCA 4 page document version can be viewed on the NAFAC website: http://nafac.co.uk where you click on Read Press Releases, then click on Nafac Press Releases, and scroll down the inner window and click on UOFCA letter to the EA. From there it will open itself as a PDF file. Mr A Taylor National Fisheries Policy & Process Manager Environment Agency Rio House Waterside Drive Atzec West Almondsbury Bristol BS32 4UD Date: Dear Mr Taylor, The Salmon & Freshwater Fisheries Act is currently under review and I wish to have a say in that process. Allowing rod licence holders to take away or kill a number (varying from region to region) of coarse fish from any water everyday, no matter how large those fish are, is unnecessary in modern times and can only help lead to serious reduction of fishery stocks, especially in specimen sizes. This may not have happened on a national-scale, yet, but it is a rapidly emerging problem with potential for enormous growth due to the influx of people from cultures where it is everyday practice to help your self to fish and eat them. Even in lakes where fish are normally the landowner’s property, current law (and frequently lack of police interest,) give the owner little chance of dealing with the problem. Fish in rivers, classed as wild creatures, have even less chance of protection and the EA no grounds for prosecution. Anglers trying to change bylaws in all Agency regions are unlikely to produce a country-wide consistent, easily understandable, result. I want to see the SFFA changed, making it an offence to take or kill coarse fish without Agency consent (which would be granted for, say, stock management or fish farms supplying the food trade). Regional bylaws would then have to change, making taking of sizeable fish a crime for which the Agency could prosecute in the same way as it prosecutes anglers who don’t have rod licences. The change would also make it more difficult for people to illegally move fish in ones and twos from water to water. The change needs to cover all types of waters, not just rivers. I don’t wish to change the law relating to limited numbers of small fish being used as bait. Thank you for your attention and I would appreciate your reaction and a reply to the ideas I have contributed. Yours Sincerely Name xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Address xxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxxx
  8. I have just seen this press release and i think it needs our support even though it has been talked about on here in a round about way before. As you know, it seems that fish stealing is getting worse with non-anglers taking coarse fish away for eating or anglers who buy a rod license are 'entitled' to take them away no matter how big. We know this has been going on for a long time but now there is a chance to get the law changed to stop it. It is not done and dusted yet!..Cheers...Ray Date posted: 25-1-2006 Source: Martin Read NAFAC Press Officer Subject: Change in bylaws sought to protect fish stocks Content of Press Release: The National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives, (NAFAC) is supporting a proposal being put forward by the Upper Ouse Fisheries Consultative Association, (UOFCA), which seeks a change in Environment Agency bylaws to make the unauthorised removal of fish from rivers, drains, canals, and still waters illegal. In a memorandum to member clubs and other interested parties, UOFCA point out that under current bylaws in the Anglian, and some other regions, the Environment Agency are powerless to get involved with fish removal in many instances, because current bylaws allow the removal of up to two fish without approval. As a result UOFCA are asking other Consultatives, clubs and individual anglers to write to the Environment Agency seeking a change to the law to enable the unauthorised removal of fish to become a criminal offence. UOFCA Chairman Trevor Johnson said, ‘The time to write to the Agency is now, because they, together with Defra, are currently reviewing the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act which is the foundation upon which regional bylaws are based’ Terry Mansbridge, NAFAC’s Executive Chairman, commented, “NAFAC support UOFCA’s appeal because there are problems in some parts of the country with fish either being taken to illegally restock elsewhere or for the table. This is an ideal opportunity to tighten up the regulations” Anyone wishing to support a change in bylaws should write to, Mr. A Taylor, Environment Agency National Fisheries Policy and Process Manager. 9. Thought this might be appropriate that i found on the web. Bicycle Cranks Recalled by Shimano - ... Shimano has received more than 630 reports of cranks breaking in North ... consumers should stop using their bicycles immediately and call Shimano at ...... I always thought there was something not quite right about northern anglers and their choice of tackle. ..Ray [ 16. April 2005, 12:50 AM: Message edited by: RollingPinBoy ]
  10. Chris..You can use Lee's baitrunner spools as Casters to move it, or even better, try 4 rolling pins which are better rollers..they have many uses. The settee might be a bit small for Lee's bivvie ..Ray
  11. Problem is Lee, is that they can't keep up with orders at the factory. Did use shimano's a while ago and still got 2 here. Great reels as you say (when your asleep on the bank,) but not the same quality as they used to be, unless you pay the dosh and go for the higher quality up market models, which are far superior but toooo expensive to pay for a noddy reel. ..Ray . 12. No offence Trent but….If the book had been 'crap' (in your honest opinion) ...would you have done the same by broadcasting it everywhere?.. I think not because Steve would sue you by the balls, considering the book is not on sale yet! A reviewer also has to gain respect and trust before people believe. What might look good to some, it may seem rubbish to others. All you have done is hype it down our throats, here, there and everywhere and tried to sell the book with an unknown ‘invention’ and without a proper review of any substance. I think you may have convinced some people, but I believe the more open minded are not silly and are very sceptical. It is mentioned else where, that the book is a trilogy/compilation of the previous ones with some extra bits added. Is this true? Personally, and again with no offence to Steve, who is not having his say in the posts, i believe Tony Miles, Trefor West, Fred Crouch, John Bailey, Nick Giles, John Wilson, The Barbel Catchers, Pete Reading, Guy Robb, Andy Orme, Brian Dowling, Peter Wheat, Peter Stone, W.J Howes; to name a few who have written books, chapters and articles on barbel, they are, no doubt, in a totally different league with superior experience and more factual writings… Ray [ 15. 13. What venue are you fishing so we can come along and watch the coots?
  14. For fifty quid peter, i'd let you cuddle it and do a Wallis cast of 100 yards. However, they are brand new mk2' at £325 including P+P UK. Any ideas on the other reel above for 50p?...Cheers.. Ray
  15. quote: 1st limited editions always make a great deal of money especially if the number are below 100 copies. It does depend on who the author is and credibility plus the content. quote: So if your a novice to the world of barbel fishing, this book's the kiddy. So, is it aimed at anglers who havn't caught barbel.. and not the average/seasoned guy who knows the rigs /baits etc already? Are we buying something that we know about and has been done before in other books!
