  1. Spent a week at Taverham mill for a weeks fishing with two Angling friends. When i booked back in april i was not informed the Wensum at Taverham mill was a shadow of its former self. No barbel and no chub over a pound was cought , all we could catch was dace, a few roach and perch and the odd chublet. It seems Otters have decimated the fishery and also the lakes too. We spent nearly £600 for the weeks holiday thinking we would catch a barbel or two and a few decent chub. Last year we fished Lenwade and had the odd decent chub but no barbel. Looks like next year we will be choosing a different destination for our annual fishing holiday. http://norfolkanglers.co.uk/publications/d...the-wensum.html
  2. Hi Mally, few years have passed since these posts, are you still fishing and do you still fish the Bain?
  3. Cheers Mat, boot a week at Taverham Mill for September, looks the ideal place.
  4. Cheers for the reply Ant, i was looking forward to fishing the river but it sound like they dont manage the banks if the cabbage plants restrict you getting near the waters edge. Last year we fished Len Wade at the bridge inn and found the fishing a bit disapointing and the Bailiffs a bit standoffish. Can you reccomend anywhere with good river and lake/pond fishing that also provide accomodation? Im going with 2 mates who like lake fishing with a bit of river fishing thrown in, mei can fish lakes anytime but dont have decent river fishing where i live so the river is my top priority. Ive also tried to book a week at kingfisher but it seems the google checkout no longer support the site, ive sent 2 e-mails asking if i can pay another way but so far ive not had a reply. So if i can find anywhere alse thats reccomended ill see about changing my plans, it doesent have to be Norfolk or the Wensum. Cheers, Mal
  5. Im going here for a week in september and would appreciate any info on the river stretch of the wensum at Kingfisher lakes. Ive seen good and bad reports on the place especially about drunk bar manager and staff arguing. No phone signal and no staff half the time. Anyway ill pay my money and take my chances. Any other info on the place would be good.
  6. This year me and a mate as decided to do a sort of rod race to make it interesting. The rules are we fish together when doing the rod race, we can only fish a venue 4 times and take alternative turns in picking the venue. It works like this, when fishing a venue every species you catch earns you a point, once a species is cought at that venue you cannot get any more points unless its deemed a specimen. So if i catch a common carp thats a point. If i then catch a common carp over 10lb i get a point becouse its a specimen fish, a common over 15lb would get you 2 points and a common over 20lb would get you 3 points. Say you cought a common at a venue you had not fished before and it weighed over 20lbs, you would get 4 points for that fish, 1 point for the species and 3 points becouse its over 20lbs. You are allowed 3 specimens per venue and if you are lucky inough to catch the 3 alloted specimens at that venue then thats it no more points at that venue for that species of fish no matter how big it is. For roach we class specimen 1 at 1lb , specimen 2 at 2 lbs and specimen 3 at 3lbs. Tench is 3lbs, 4lbs and 6lbs. You can alter the rules to suit so your specimen sizes may differ to ours and you may visit a venue 3 times or even 5 times if you prefer. Say i cought 40 roach at a venue we were fishing for the first time and 39 were under a pound and one of them was over a pound then that would be 2 points , 1 for the species and a point for the roach over 1lb. It makes the fishing a lot more interesting and tactics can come into play. Say we had fished a venue 3 times and were fishing it for the last time in the comp, if i had cought all the species in that venue but not any specimens then i would be tagetting the bigger fish to earn points whilst my mate would be fishing for species he had not yet cought at that venue and hoping to get a specimen too. Hope all this makes sense[] If you like you can give 1 point to stillwater cought Brabel and 2 points for river cought Barbel. Hard to catch species could warrent 3 or even 5 points. Its best not to give too many points for a single species as the comp last for the whole year and its no fun if someone get a massive lead so only giving one point should keep it close. So far we have fished 3 times, first venue was Tetney lock where i cought Stickleback, flounder and perch, my mate cought stickleback and roach so that was 3-2 to me. Second match was Tetney lock again and all we cought was dace so the points were now 4-3 to me. Today we fished a different venue for a 3 hour session and i targetted small fish on maggot and cought nothing(IT WAS BLOODY FREEZING) My mate went on the method feeder with Luncheon meat and i thought no way not this time of year. He had 2 mirrors, one of 4lbs point for species and one of 15lb 140z 2 points for specimen over 15lbs. So he scored 3 points and me none. He now leads me 6 points to 3. Hope you get the gist of it all and it is good fun and will get even better when the warmer weather arrives. If anyone wants more info or as questions then fire away. We have created score sheets that i can post a pic up if anyone wants to see how its layed out. Also if anyone as any good ideas to add then ill be interested. This comp will work better with 4 anglers but they must fish together and species and specimens must be witnessed by the other anglers.
  7. Had 2 days fishing the River Seven at Normanby and i havent fished it for years so was looking forward to it. I was shocked to find a silted up river with loads of sunken tree branches all over and lots of trees cut down. It looked like a hurricane had been through and looked a right mess. The fishing was very poor and a lot of the swims were devoid of fish. Ive been fishing this river for 30 odd years and i was gutted to see it in shuch a state. It need a good flush through and work doing on the banksides as most of the free stretch is unfishable. The private stretch that im allowed to fish that belongs to the Bell family was also silted up in lots of places and lots of sunken branches again causing hidden snags. The fishing was hard work and there was no sign of any chub or trout and all i cought was a few small grayling in the 2 days i was there. I will try it again in the summer but im afraid it will never be the same river again.
  8. Not been on this forum for ages and im so shocked to hear this sad news. My thoughts are with Newt and all jans family and friends.
  9. Hi Les, your post made me laugh. Ive been thinking of joining SPAC so i can fish the trent.
  10. Cheers Brian, booked the Anchor inn in borobridge and will fish the swale or Ure depending on the best reports early in July. Will ask the local tackle shop who sell day tickets for advice. Thanks for your reply, will keep the Black bull in mind for future trips. Regards, Tyke
  11. Ive been searching websites for a River fishing break on a Yorkshire River for 2 days in July. Looking for a B & B near a River in Yorkshire that can give some good Chub/Barbel fishing. Does anyone know of a decent place, im thinking Boston spa/ Tadcaster or maybe the Ure, Ouse or Swale. I can find B & Bs in these areas but ideally i would like a place that caters for anglers who have somewhere safe to store tackle e.t.c A pub would be ideal but it must be within a mile or so of the river we will fish. I would also consider somewehere with a pond nearby as a back up if the river is out of sorts. I thought i would get lots of hits inb a search but most of it comes up with fly fishing and big hotels in Leeds !!!!!!! I would consider other areas in the country as long as its within a 100 miles of Scunthorpe . Can anyone help?
  12. Well its well over 6 years and i thought i would have had a reply by now from Simod. Two post tosser lol
  13. Going to Olu Deniz on 25th of October and was wondering if its worth taking a telescopic rod with me to fish from the beach/rocks? As anyone done any fishing here and was it productive?
  14. Clever idea chavender. Wont get a chance to use my new 706 for a while due to some major decorating and other house probs.
  15. I was lucky inough to get the book of Amazon for only £5 used in very good condition.
  16. Ive just had a new 706 delivered and ive noticed there is some play when you hold the drag nut and gently pull the handle out in a sidewards rocking motion. Is this normal ? The play is where the chrome ring is just after the hanle where it joins the main body of the reel. I suspect this is normal but for peace of mind i want to make sure.
  17. Thanks for the feedback, im monitoring the one on Ebay. Ive got 2 Drennan rods, one is a light waggler rod and is very slim and light and a joy to use. The other is a Drennan Tench float rod and ive only used it about 6 times in as many years so i may sell this as its a shame its not getting used more often. Ive also got a Technium Bomb rod that ive never really got on with and had both tips snap on me( by the top eye) but all i did was trim the tips off and now use the tips with the second eyes now being the top eye!. Both tips are quite fine so it doesent make much difference. This happened to me on the Trent too at collingham but i was using a john wilson Avon rod with a 3 oz feeder and when the end eye got cought up with the line and snapped off i trimmed the tip to the next eye and it actually made it better for fishing the tidal trent. I cought 5 Barbel that day all on maggot and my mate in the peg below me cought nothing using Halibut pellets. Getting back to Catching the impossible, ive used a prog called Handbrake and converted catching the impossible to work on my Ipod touch.
  18. Been watching the fantastic catching the impossible and was amazed at the really light sensitive quiver rod martin bowler used to catch that big Dace. Does anyone know what make the rod is? I love small stream fishing and want something really sensitive and 11 foot or under I nearly bought one of the TFG 8 foot commerical quiver rods but i understand they are not as light and sensitive as you would expect. Im looking at a couple of rods and one is the shakespear mach 2 xt wand at 9 foot or a Shimano Speedmaster Winklepicker. The Shakespear looks a good buy for the price so unless someone reccomends a better rod i will be buying this. By the way when Martin was catching those perch on the feeder on that resevoir i was a bit miffed as its Covenham res near me and no ones allowed to fish it!
  19. Sorry for bringing this up to the top again but i feel we should have a section for old friends remembered. How many of us as forgotten John and other members of Anglers net who have sadly passed away?
  20. Happy belated Birthday KB.
  21. Thanks for that den, its pretty much what im doing. Ive finally got the hole dug and got sand in for the base, ive filled it a quarter with water and seeing if it keeps level for a couple of days. Then ill back fill it and use the hose pipe to wash the soil and sand down and help compact it down. Suffering from hayfever so not managing to get much done with it at the mo.
  22. I have bought a pre formed pond after my old lined pond started to lose water. The dimensions for the new pond are , L: 215cm B: 170cm D: 65cm I: 1000l So its fairly big! Ive dug out the hole apart from a few odd inches here and there and have just come in for a drink and a breather as sweat is pouring off me lol. Ive been thinking of the best way to do it and i know ill need plenty of sand to backfill it and will need a plank and spirit level to make sure its all level. Ive had a quick search but cannot really find any usefull site on fitting pre formed ponds, does anyone have any links to some good pond sites? Im taking before and after pics and will post them on here once its all finished.
