I fished a short 9hr day session with a friend this week on Banjo Lake at Lee Valley Fisheries. I spent a couple of days looking for a day ticket water that seemed it would give us a good days fishing. And all the searching seemed to pay off.
Within an hour my friends right had rod went tearing off pulling it off the rest. After about 10 minutes fighting, he landed a 19lbs mirror in good condition. He caught this on worm tipped with sweetcorn fished with a method feeder.
Only 5 minutes later I had a screaming run and after a good fight landed a 12lbs mirror again in good condition and beating my PB. I had this on 2x 15mm dynamite malt choc/tigernut boilies.
Afer another hour or so my left rod wend off the I pulled into what was a much more powerfull fish, it tore off about 30 yards of line and for those who know how small banjo lake is that is a long way lol. It wrapped me around some overhanging thistles on the near bank and after much worry, some constant pressure saw the fish come free of the snag and back to the middle of the lake. Soon after I landed a 15lbs mirror my new PB (again!!).
The bailiff soon came round and said all the fish come out from the other end of the lake in the afternoon, so after a few hours of no bites, knocks or signs of fish we decided to move down a bit. We ended up in the middle of the lake with a few occupied swims to the right takign care of the right hand end of the lake. After an hour or so there the other anglers said either end of the lake is good but the middle is terrible, and said to move back to where we were. We deliberated on this advice and decided to move back after seeing a fish show in the previous swims.
Having settled back down, I placed a Zig fished 4feet where I saw the fish show with orange and black foam. And 5 feet left of that I fished the same boilie as before with a 15mm pineapple pop up. Within less than a minute a fish took the boilies and after a short fight had my 3rd and final carp of the day again to 12lbs.
Within 5 minutes of packing up my friends right hand rod again tore off, after a more powerfull fight than before he brought in a 14lbs mirror caught on luncheon meat fished with a method feeder.
A very short but successfull day for our first time at the lake, all the research certainly paid off.
There are a few lakes around that area, I want to hear some views of banjo and surrounding lakes to help me decide where to fish next, any ideas?
