  1. Hi guys I Have been using braid for about a year now but thinking of going back to mono. Just wondering what reel line people are using for Chub. I used to use 8lb Fox Soft Steel (brown specimen version not the clear match version) for alot of my river angling before I went onto braid. I found it reliable and landed a Carp over 27lb from the Hants Avon when it was bank-high a few years ago using a centrepin loaded with this mono. Is it still good stuff? Ideally I would like to go down to 6lb for the Chub but I have only seen Soft Steel brown at this braking strain on Ebay. Not sure how much trust to put into buying this from Ebay (Is it old stock?), especially as no other on-line shop seems to sell it at this breaking strain. Anyways, any alternative suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers
  2. I'm lucky enough to have a couple of waters on my doorstep that are rumoured to hold perch over 4lb. My plan was to try using fish baits exclusively for a yr to see what I would catch - Perch, Chub etc. I am convinced fish catch the biggest Perch and like you for some reason have never had much joy with worms and that goes for any species really. If you read around Steve Burke articles he tends to use fish baits of around 4". He also stresses the need to use coarse fish as bait and also that they must be fresh, even if used as deadbaits (i.e caught and killed and used same day). The problem is that you need to catch the bait first and this isn't always easy especially this time of year. The last few trips I have been on I have really struggled to catch any livebait at all! I have found this very demoralising to be honest. Incidently is there any reason why most people fish for Perch in the Winter rather than Summer? Is it the case that there are other species for anglers to target in the warmer months and so Perch are overlooked? In summer it would be easier to catch the livebaits
  3. Cheers both.was thinking sling/mat would take up less space as I do like to rove.but thinking may be better to buy separate, seems most of sling/mats are more for carp. Like u say Andy I could probably carry the Matt strapped to back of my chair.which ones do you use?
  4. Been doing quite a bit of perching recently but with my "exclusive use of fish as bait" year trial I am concerned that when the inevitable Pike turns up I could be ill prepared. I used to Pike fish a number of years ago but can no longer find some of my gear. So I'm looking for a unhooking mat that will be large enough for a 20lb pike (should I fluke one) and preferably double up as a weigh sling if possible. Most of the ones I have come across are way to short. Any recommendations? Cheers
  5. So, back to the post that started this thread - did anyone watch the program and what was it like? I don't live in the region it aired so wasn't able to watch myself. Frogger
  6. Cheers Budgie. I have bought one of the Solar PTFE as recommended by Rob to try. If I am happy with it I'll buy more for the other rods. Be interesting to know Steve's opinion though as you say. I thought the Solar ones sounded interesting as thay are adjustable so "should" be able to adjust them to account for the braid I use, but I'll have to wait and see. I'll let you know how I get on.
  7. Just to clarify, diploids ('normal' fish) generally grow quicker than triploids upto a point. That point is when the onset of sexual maturity and gonad development slows the growth of diploids and triploids overtake the diploids for growth. In scientific studies it has been found that after the onset of sexual maturity Triploid Channel Catfish, Rainbow Trout and Plaice/Flounder hybrids not only exhibit faster growth but also better feed-conversion efficiency than diploids. Bieniarz etal 1997 also found that as sexual maturity approached in triploid Common Carp they grew faster than diploids.
  8. Or he could have very small hands! I reckon half of those 'big' barbel Ray Walton caught are only about 6-7lb, it's just his size that makes them look bigger. (no offense Ray)
  9. In all seriousness I think it depends on what part of the country you live in and the waters you fish as to whether you see Otters as a problem or not. Down here in Dorset they are very prolific and the local angling websites are full of talk of them. I guess in some parts of the country where they aren't as prolific one would probably have a different opinion of them. Having said that I remember it wasn't that many years ago when everyone was moaning about Cormorants decimating fisheries and all the weeklies were full of Anti-cormorant propagander. Indeed it seemed every angling 'celeb' had an opinion on them and some were strongly implying to a point just shy of condoning illegal shooting of them . I wonder then if Cormorants have suddenly retired from fishing and are no longer an impact on fisheries? Or maybe we've found another scapegoat to point the finger at. Which makes one wonder who or what we'll be pointing the finger at next.
  10. Also spawing takes up a lot of energy so Triploids grow quicker as that energy that would normally go into spawning is not used. I think Triploid Rainbow Trout are very popular as majority of Rainbows don't spawn in this country (I think there are one or two exception waters) due to the cooler waters so this would be a massive waste of energy going into a process that is never going to happen i.e spawning.
  11. Thanks for your replies guys. I shall look into adapting them. Tightlines Frogger
  12. Otters are great. I see them about 1 in 3 trips down the river, from different areas. Sometimes singularly, sometimes mothers with young. I love seeing their cheery faces
  13. Hi again Anyone any idea on best resistance free line release clip for a backdrop indicator? Found an old thread on here where someone asked about drop-off indicators. Steve Burke advised the Fox swinger arm ones but commented that he changes the line release clip. Thing is he doesn't say what type he changes to. I personally find the line clip on them a bit fiddly and if you dont set right can suddenly get resistance as line pops out on a run, which can result in dropped runs for perch. Anyone able to help? Does Steve Burke still visit this forum?
  14. Hi Everyone Just bought a new Korum quiver. My thoughts have now turned to reel protection whilst I'm carrying the rods. Not sure which to go for. Have looked at 'Thinking Anglers' ones on the net but they look as though they may be a bit too big. Reels are only Barbel sized. Chub pouches look even bigger!. What does everyone else use??
  15. Thanks, but i ended up buying the Korum 5 rod quiver which seems ideal
