No, not unless they were free samples.
Saw a mulleteer a couple of weeks ago, who last year was raving about fluorocarbon leaders. He gave me a length. Let me rephrase that.. He gave me some to try. The way he rigged it up, it looked like fishing with nylon guitar string as a hooklength. I couldn't see the point. When I mentioned this to him recently, he looked a bit sheepish and muttered words to the effect of:
"I wouldn't use that so-and-so rubbish anymore."
I can't remember what the brand was etc.. too much info.. too many years..
So, DG, it would have to become appreciably better and more advantageous than my normal Berkley to get me to try it again.
Thanks v muchly for your input, Graham; always much appreciated. I agree about never saying never, because that was the main point of this thread .. i.e. are we prepared to forgive & forget the 1st generation of fluoros, and to give the second wave of improved ones a try?BTW, which Berkley is your normal line??

I use fluoro carbon for saltwater/pike fly leader but have never hook anything large enough to really test them, although smash takes from high single figure pike have tested them to a degree. I use Riverge Grandmax plus a wire trace for pike.
Thanks for that info. Very interesting. By coincidence, I've just read an article about leaders .. I'll dig it out again ... I'm fairly certain Riverge was there!DG

I think my swivels had something to do with it,you see sometimes i use swivels from kinkied traces to make new ones when piking i think some of thses got imixed up with my other bits in bob's when using these swivels i alwasy leave a small tag of wire so i know wich side was attached to the wire, becuase the wire grates on the swivel ever so slighly it doesnt effect the wire but obviously it will go througth nylon probably braid too.i picked up on it in mick browns book on piking.now i know...
Hmmm ... maybe you're being a tad unfair to Perlon because if your swivels are knackered, even fluoro won't save you in the medium-termquote:

I've never used Vanish in anything less than 10 lb Breaking Strength, so can't comment on the lower BSs, I'm fraid. Sorry.I'm sure though that other AN Forumers have ........

BTW I assume you know the free stretch in the middle of Bath, about 300 yds below Pultney Weir? Much over-looked but not to be sniffed-at! I've had some lovely chub on the far bank

Yup. Right down the M4 from me.Ticket-wise, why not cut through all the cr@p and join Bristol Amalgamated, that's if you're going to fish the venues more than a couple of times-a-season
Depending on how far you can travel, I can PM you with some ace double-figure-barbel venues on their waters, where I actually fish for the 4+ lb mega-perch

Well, there's a lorra, lorra feedback from ratty here:-

Originally posted by ratty46 and edited by DG :..... talking of snap-offs, & ESP Ghost, I used the stuff to great effect this weekend ....
.... got smashed on mono (? nylon ?which? - DG ), so ( the water ) being clear, I used 10 lb ESP Ghost; as others have said, it's thick, but very good underwater.
(It) does go a little springy (so) kid gloves (are) needed;
I use Grinners and Knotless knot arrangements; very secure; very happy; see, I told you it was worth the money!!
.. still (I) must try Sufix soon and Berkley Vanish; I've heard good things about that fluoro - good in lower breaking strains I hear?.

Yup, but I was really wondering just how strong you expect your knot(s) to be as a percentage of the original line's strengthAfter-all, there's no point is choosing, say, a 10 lb BS line for whatever good reason(s), if its wet knot BS is only 50 - 60% i.e. 5 - 6 lb

Originally posted by Paul_D:One thing you did mention in an earlier thread caught my attention though, that about saliva having some of the best natural coatants. You then went on to mention line lubes; these are something I've not bothered with in the past but I might give them a go this year.
Jim Gibbinson also emphasises this in one of his articles.Apprarently, too, lubing the knot very well before pulling tight, is most important for fluorocarbon lines
Branded line-lubes are good but tend to be expensive. In using cheaper DIY alternatives, the main thing to watch-out for is that the lube doesn't contain any solvents that might weaken the line. I've been using water-based polish emulsions and even baby-oil.

Yup, I use a similar bit of kit, out of the Missus's sewing box I think it's a needle-threading wire loop.DG

Nice one, Nugg
They're only 11 quid for starters and they've got the new colours and they're the salt-water versions, so that works-out at just over 8 quid each! That's nearer the mark.
Cheers muchly
