  1. I'm finding the tip sensitivity even on the lightest tip not that great and sometimes I'm missing bites. The rod cost £20 and the reel £15 so wasn't a big investment. I'm really enjoying this style of fishing so just looking to step up my gear to something a bit better quality that will last a few years longer.
  2. Normally fish a small 4 acre water at mid range. Main targets are silvers, tench and small carp to about 10lb max. One rod I was looking at is the maver abyss 11ft. I also heard the drennan red series reels are pretty decent for the £20 price tag.
  3. Hi all I've been doing a lot of feeder fishing this year and have been putting some nice weights together. The maggot feeder, with some sensas lake and special g groundbait, has been particularly good at producing a good mixed bag of fish. I've been making do with a 11ft leeda feeder rod and shimano hyperloop reel however its a pretty 'entry level' set up. I'd like to upgrade my gear to something a bit better however it should still be fairly 'budget' in price. Something under £40 for the rod and perhaps under £30 for the reel. Any thoughts? Thanks
  4. As the title suggests, I was hoping to open up a discussion about the merits and pitfalls of supermarket baits. The obvious classics like sweetcorn, bread and luncheon meat are well documented but what about some of the lesser known options. I remember reading an artcile in a fishing mag about a year ago which was talking about catching on tinned black eyed peas! I've also read about peperami for carp and even someone using garlic cloves shaped and then banded! A final example is guy I spoke to locally who often uses sweet chili sauce as a flavour dip for his boilies with good results. Any thoughts or examples?
  5. Its a mixed species 4 acre water. What about groundbait vs pellets for the feeder? I thought the pellets might stick better.
  6. I picked up a couple of 25g flat drennan methods recently but I haven't used them yet. I was hoping to target the carp, bream and the bigger roach in my local so was planning to use 6mm mini boilies (tutti frutti) as hook bait (band banded to a size 14). I also have some sonubaits krill 8mm soft hookers which I thought I'd try as well but perhaps these are getting a bit big for the bream and roach? I have a bag of fin perfect 2mm pellets to mould to the feeder. Any thoughts? Thanks

  8. Hi all When it comes to carp fishing I'm seeing a wide variety of methods but not much by way of catch comparisons. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that a straight lead on the bottom is the most popular method. I was wondering though how this compares to the catch rates for say the method feeder, other types of feeder and perhaps a tactic like the pellet waggler. In other words, which method would typically on an average water catch the most fish. It terms of enjoyment, what is also the most fun! Thanks

  10. Thanks all. So the stuff I'm looking it is rated 30lb and 0.26mm. Now according to this wesbite - http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Angling-Times/Section/how-to/Coarse-fishing-advice/Fishing-Tips2/Fishing-Charts--Guides/Line-breaking-strain-guide2/ 0.26mm in mono would be rated 11lb 6oz which is why I find braid a bit confusing however I can see that what this essentially means is that braid is much stronger than mono.
  11. Thanks. How do the breaking strains work? Is 25lb braid the same as 25lb mono?
  12. I must admit I've steered clear of braid to date as I find the breaking strains a bit confusing. The same rules don't seem to apply to mono. Also is it spooled onto the reel in the same way? i.e simply tie a knot and then wind it on? Thanks
  13. Yes I would appreciate the sellers details. Thanks!
  14. So I'm leaning towards the Abu Garcia devil spin which might tick the boxes perhaps in the 8ft version. I could couple this with the Mitchell avocet bronze reel as suggested. Looks a bargain set up at £30 ish! What about line strength? I was thinking a 12lb mono might do the job.
  15. Hi I'm looking for suggestions for a good but reasonably priced lure rod and reel for piking from both boat and the shore. It will need to be able to chuck some fairly big lures but still have a good action for playing smaller fish. I'm not a fan of the baitcaster style reels either. I was thinking of spending around £50 - £60 in total for both. Thanks
