I saw a comment about there being NO CARP IN THE USA> As a UK born and Raised CArp hunter And A Canadian I can assure the person that thee are Carp in the USA and CAnad Southern boundary it just takes knowledgeof the local waterways and Primarily backwaters that are becomming cloggged with Eurasian Milfoil the favourite hidign hole for a large Carp . The Sumas River in Wshinggtom State has some monsters as do the waters of Ossoyous Lake in Southern BC those rivers and Slow water sloughs are loaded and they do not need passorts to cross the boarder. When I want a chanve of pace to my salmon trout Bass hunts, carp are my quarry as they are the only memories of hy youth in the UK I can catch we do not have Tench Roach Rudd large Chub ours do not exceed the size of minnows 2-4 inches and weightless. I miss that fishing and Hope to retire to the Broads regio and resume my Angling Retirement Salm,on Are primarily FOOD Fish and the tackle we use in Canada is Akin to Fishing witrh a Tugboat and 1 inch steel cable no sport in that. I guess I am just spoiled I can Fill my Deep freeze every year between July and December. I need only SDalmon taggs to monitor my catch an ually and A sport fishing licence the same cost as a Course Environmental Licence Fishing is Free just find a spot and Cast . It was that way with a few exceptions in the UK in my youth. SO IF you find Catfish your likely to find Carp try a Few parboiles potatoes or bread squised to a dough . it will ward off worm hungry Bass and Catfish . Carp are Shy and do not like motion on the bank or voices. be patient they like to make a five course meal out of a piece of baitm that takes time to suck and disolve the bait the hook will spook the fish at first touch so an Early strike will leave the bait in the part open mouth of the Fish and slip the hook beyond the mouth on strike. The Fraser river sloughs ( Backwaters)are Full of Carp that provide fast action they are not like UK Carp, made shy by the repeated catching a problem caused by Catch and release praticed in the UK from times far erlier than mine . Canada Sees Carp as a Garbage Fish and will often selectively poison them off to protect the trout and Salmon fishery. this takes Bass as well. HOwever As an Environmental Chemist I see more damage to salmonids than Carp. THE damage to Salmon Eggs is not a Carp issue as the Egggs incubate in very fast flowing Waters required to keep the eggs oygenated Carp do not venture into such waters only by accident. IF your a trout Fisherman you wont find Carp If Bass is your Fun you may find a few but in the slowest of fdlowing Waters and calmest of lakes . Canadian Anglers do not hunt Carp and miss out on a Fun inexpensive day . and a great way to teach a youngster a big fish needs respect.
