  1. Canadian Fishing rulles that work world wide but like we in its inception your probably not going to read further READ ON! A pike angler saddened by an injured pike he caught that obviouly damaged by the remval of a pair of trebble hooks that were deep into the gullet and also in the Jaw Bone structures . Trebbles are unnessesary First point just dont use them a Cavemnan made his hooks barbed for a reason We no longer require for any reason 50 years OF salmon trout Bass Muskie NOrthern pike GAr all fish that will shake a hook or so we envison Perhaps some do but I like my efellow Anglers comment that We have never lost a fish on Barbless hooks, Time For UK Clubs to begin loking at this as a way to improve the health of the fish we return to the Water. removing the barbless is a gentle shake of the line close to the hook IVe not ue a #16 hook sonce my daus in the UK but 14 yes and eben they are held firm a 16 may be the limit of this and an 18 may reqire a far lesser than typical barb to hold the prey. THis does work avoids BLOODY messes and trn Gills and throats. Damaged Jaw bpnes, are simply Barbaric hook removal a stuch barb in the bone is then FORCED out by Grasping the hook with Pliars and YANKING . I agre with that angler PIke are Soft fleshed in Summer firming up in october to become the Fighting Fish we get hooked on but the hook it is on nee not be the terminator of its life !. TRY the Singel ANd the BArbless 40 to 60 pound salmon are common in my freezer they didnt escape my Barbless hook. Huhdreds more rturned after my maximum catch and keep limit! Salmon also have a set of sharp teeth . IF y7ou insist on using a GAG to hold the mouth open try a non injurious design the opld ones I remember also Barbaric. NOt needed
  2. Sounds like A Case For Barbless hooks! I havnt used a Barbed trebble hook since I left the Uk in 1963 and have found then BARBARIC devices that do irreprable harm to the fish we catch Ive used only singles with the Barb pinched off for mothe lifve and spinner baits . good hooking of live paits ensures a safe Cast and the Barb serves no purpose ive not lost a singel Fish to a shaken hook ! Ive had tackle breaks but not let a fish excape otherwise Its Law In Canada So an ANgling country that has some great jumpers when hookesd were demonstrating the BARB is BARBARIC removing hooks is simple and virtually painless. Ive never used pliars or any other hook removal device . Ive Never seen a GAG thats used to keep Pikeys mouth oppen and teeth out of my hands . not seen one in a tackle shop in Canada Home of 80 + pounder muskie ( Super sised Pike ) if you timid just gently hold the pike by its Eyes USE latex cloves and pres them into the skull its mouth will Fall open and you can tickle its tonsils , Please use care remember you wouldnt want someone pushing your Eyes into your head . But try pressing your closed eyes inward its reasonably painless and the Pike as a clear Eyelid that closes as you come close to it. SEASON FOR PIKE Fising NO real Defines season as you catch a rtoach and a pike latches on IVe landed a 14 pounder on a #16 hook!! MY Barbless hook is made by flattening the barb with a pair of needlenose pliars . TRY THEM PLEASEthey do work and the bait doesnt escapeeither worms maggots Roach Tripples were oughtright banned and we find on loss for that change. tooss the trebbles in the Garbage and use a stout #00 01 hook short shank wide curve The fish will thank you when you release it!
  3. OLD BURY HILL LAKE Dorking Surrey. sounds like thereare a few Bury hills that have Good fishing . Back in 1958 this was a great Tench Pike Roach fishery I remember some wonderfull days of my Boyhook this is a Magical place that epitamises the British ANgler, For Fish or Peace one Fids ample bounty of both.
  4. I saw a comment about there being NO CARP IN THE USA> As a UK born and Raised CArp hunter And A Canadian I can assure the person that thee are Carp in the USA and CAnad Southern boundary it just takes knowledgeof the local waterways and Primarily backwaters that are becomming cloggged with Eurasian Milfoil the favourite hidign hole for a large Carp . The Sumas River in Wshinggtom State has some monsters as do the waters of Ossoyous Lake in Southern BC those rivers and Slow water sloughs are loaded and they do not need passorts to cross the boarder. When I want a chanve of pace to my salmon trout Bass hunts, carp are my quarry as they are the only memories of hy youth in the UK I can catch we do not have Tench Roach Rudd large Chub ours do not exceed the size of minnows 2-4 inches and weightless. I miss that fishing and Hope to retire to the Broads regio and resume my Angling Retirement Salm,on Are primarily FOOD Fish and the tackle we use in Canada is Akin to Fishing witrh a Tugboat and 1 inch steel cable no sport in that. I guess I am just spoiled I can Fill my Deep freeze every year between July and December. I need only SDalmon taggs to monitor my catch an ually and A sport fishing licence the same cost as a Course Environmental Licence Fishing is Free just find a spot and Cast . It was that way with a few exceptions in the UK in my youth. SO IF you find Catfish your likely to find Carp try a Few parboiles potatoes or bread squised to a dough . it will ward off worm hungry Bass and Catfish . Carp are Shy and do not like motion on the bank or voices. be patient they like to make a five course meal out of a piece of baitm that takes time to suck and disolve the bait the hook will spook the fish at first touch so an Early strike will leave the bait in the part open mouth of the Fish and slip the hook beyond the mouth on strike. The Fraser river sloughs ( Backwaters)are Full of Carp that provide fast action they are not like UK Carp, made shy by the repeated catching a problem caused by Catch and release praticed in the UK from times far erlier than mine . Canada Sees Carp as a Garbage Fish and will often selectively poison them off to protect the trout and Salmon fishery. this takes Bass as well. HOwever As an Environmental Chemist I see more damage to salmonids than Carp. THE damage to Salmon Eggs is not a Carp issue as the Egggs incubate in very fast flowing Waters required to keep the eggs oygenated Carp do not venture into such waters only by accident. IF your a trout Fisherman you wont find Carp If Bass is your Fun you may find a few but in the slowest of fdlowing Waters and calmest of lakes . Canadian Anglers do not hunt Carp and miss out on a Fun inexpensive day . and a great way to teach a youngster a big fish needs respect.
  5. I know of only one waterway in the UK that has more exotic Carp From koi to BRIGHT SCARLET carpo with Common carp charachteristics. Its on a PRIVATE NO admssion and that means to any one. I used to sneak in and fish the tree laden MOat unseen to the mannor house . In Smallfields surrey. UP to 5 + pounds not many over that most 4 oz to a pound. Its probably gone now this was Back in 1958 . THe range of fish was great and size diminished no trophy fish however 2 hourss fishing would yeidls more than 100 fish .Great Fun for a sneaky 14 year old.
  6. Sheila YOu hit a nerve thats probably world wide in scope. I am over the pond in Canadaand will see my last productive Salmon season. out some spots I go to have a very large population of women anglers . Nearly all of these spots have dense populationsof Anglers per Foot of Bank and Washdoom or protapotrty facilities are NON existent for at least 30 Miles ? so say NON existent . I am unaware of 900 miles of the Fraser River Where there is reasonable Privacy and anatomical Facilities . SDame for practically any WIld rivers of Canada, Even close to populations . Its a real issue . I remeber my days at THe Old Bury hill Lake in Dorking UK Private Pay to enter Boat rentals Toilets ? NONE yet it had a conseeion and tackle stand but I guess in 1958 we didnt worry about such discomforts. Tring Resovior Sonning Gravel Pit Demming Gravel Pit none of my haunt s as a youngster had any Facilities and none within a RUN for a few miles. Guess we have to hold it Hmmmm?
