  2. As a public venue I imagine that the offenders get away with it as there are no owners/bailiffs regularly checking. Not sure you can stop the mindless idiot brigade doing this to the countryside as they dont seem to give a s**t about anything or anyone. I belong to a club that have no litter problems at all even through one of the venues have public footpaths around them. The club decided a few years ago to implement rules that any litter found in the area of your swim even if it's not yours and you get a two month ban from all club waters and it works without exception
  3. Oh dear. So much barely disguised, political, huff and puff. Some here appear to have forgotten - perhaps it never even crossed their barely glimmering, human(?) consciousnesses? - that with a healthy population of good old, indigenous (that means born here, right to be here, long before us, and definitely no freeloading foreigners), OTTERS, the mink get eaten and pushed out (and then some). Fish have to put up with those otter though - as they always did before before we poisoned etc them out. Meanwhile, in picture-postcard pretty, highly desirable, North Yorkshire, the rivers are raging. Wild, huh? D'oh! [/QB] Enter Stage left the expert poring scorn Just an opinion Paul not political huff and puff. I just beleived that Mink could not be blamed for this loss of fish.I am well aware that a healthy polulation of indigenous otter's will displace the American Mink.In veiw of the EA's position that this is due to Mink/Otter preditation it seems that one of these animals may not be the cause. So perhaps the EA should look again and find the real reason. I do hope the EA do decide to take a closer look in this probelm and find the real cause because all the while it is palced at the door of otters public opinion will alway be on the side of the nice fluffy animal and not the real issue.
  4. I havent used this forum for some time and have read through this post with great interest as I fish the potter area a fair bit in the winter. I have little knowledge of otters but have seen mink preditation first hand. Has there been a decline in the number of young waterfoul in the area as Mink are an oppertunist killer and if there are mink in any numbers there will be very few young waterfoul about. Have you seen patches of feathers as though a bird has been plucked? Also Mink will normally leave skelatal remains of prey. I saw one family of mink kill huge numbers of waterfoul in one lake I fish and the only fish we found was one that had died and been buried which the mink then found. This particular lake had no young waterfoul on it the mink had killed them all we found hundereds of dead birds. In the end we caught them in traps and the problems stopped. I am no expert but have seen the problems first hand and this does not sound like Mink from waht I have seen in the past.I am sure some expert will pour scorn on what I have said but just my opinion.
  5. I think the thing that really get up my nose is that Prof Rose's report stating that fish did not have the nessasary part of the brain to feel pain,PETA disputed this report as biased and incorrect. But this new report is correct in there opinion. As anglers i think we are just going to have to accept that any report that aggree's with there argument will be accepted as fact. They are not prepaired to look at anything that disputes there research, and as far as I'm aware this latest report was funded by an animal rights group,so of course it was going to reach the conclusions that it did.
  6. The only problem with useing PAA coaches is that they want to charge, which is fair enough as there in it as a buisness, and unfortunatly there just is not the money in the school's budget to pay for out of hours learning activities,I am in the process of trying to get on the NFA coaching course.
  7. Hope this Is O.K Mods! I’m after some help from some of you guy’s. I am a governor for a Surrey Primary School, we have a large number of pupils who are from a socially disturbed background some with educational and behavioural difficulties. My aim is to teach small groups of about twelve children aged 9-12 and hopefully give them break from there problems and give them a pastime that they will enjoy as I have maybe even for life. The sessions will be on a Saturday for about six hours in duration about twice a month starting in mid May. The aim is to teach the children the basics of angling including safety issue’s and countryside awareness in a classroom as an after school activity and then progress to a local venue to allow them to put into practice what they have learnt. As far as we are aware this is the first school to teach angling as an out of hours learning activity, The Aim is to extend the project to other local schools within the Surrey area and possibly build up a selection of tackle that can be kept in a central location for all to use. I have approached a couple of large tackle companies to see if any would consider sponsoring a project of this type. So if you would like to get involved and lend a hand with this worth while project as a volunteer to teach or have any old tackle lurking in a garage or shed that is no longer of use to you and you would like to donate it to a very worthy cause please get in touch. Any help you could give would be genuinely appreciated by the school the children and myself. I’m sure most of you can still remember that first tiny roach or gudgeon that you caught as a kid and the magical feeling that gave you, wouldn’t it be nice to help someone experience that and maybe create another life long angler. Thanks for your time in reading this and feel free to get in touch should you wish to help or for more info. Joe Holdsworth
