  1. Hi Is it just me or is there a massive trend for anglers and tackle companies to specify, recommend and use massively overgunned tackle? why is this becoming such a trend? It seems that nowadays you have to be using 3lb test curve rods for carp, 2lb test for Barbel and hooks and rigs etc that look more like sea tackle! I can remember catching loads of big fish when I was a kid just using a cheap float rod, 5lb line, size 8 hook etc.....when you are young and poor you tend to just go for anything with the tackle you have. Also I have caught large carp and pike from fairly weedy waters with 2lb test through action rods and size 6 super specialist hooks 10lb line etc and this type of tackle seems to work fine. I understand the need to use adequate tackle in order to suit the conditions and size of fish etc but surely some of these super stiff rods, heavy braided mainlines and massive hooks are a bit too much and take away alot of the excitement of playing fish etc? Just wondering what other people think? Cheers
  2. Hi Everyone Having not really done any fishing for about 7 years or so, I have decided to pick up a rod again. When I was fishing before I was only going carp fishing but this time have equipped myself with a couple of 1.25lb test Drennan Avon rods and intend to go for everything I can. My first trips have seen me catching a few roach on the canal in Hackney and on a small lake using float fished bread and corn which has been fun. Next I am keen to catch some Chub as I used to love fishing for these on the Avon when I was a kid, also I would love to catch a Barbel. Its been fun so far building my tackle back up and visiting tackle shops etc, although the carp fishing industry seems to have gone a bit crazy, all the mad rig bits and stuff! Anyway if anyone has any tips about good places for me to fish or clubs to join then I would love to know, I live in NE London so anywhere in Essex/Herts would be good I guess. Also if anyone has some good tips on Barbel tactics I would love to hear it. Cheers!
