  1. Sorry Newt as you say in your own explanation... when applied to... but it VERY definitely isn't applied to, in the post in question. I respect your position as moderator and decision to remove my second modified post which was cheeky of me though I do feel it is sad if we need this level of pc because a few members feel offended even when a perfectly good word is used in its correct context. My wife has endured many years of uncomfortable moments because her name just happens to have been commandeered by people of a particular sexual leaning, to describe themselves and their way of life. The word is now in general usage and she has found people go to lengths to try to avoid using it and will refer to her by similar names changing perhaps one letter deliberately to F or K or adding a 'NOR' to the end... Maybe we need a campaign to reclaim our language, I'm not exactly including you in this ''we'' Newt as you don't really speak our language anyway do you?
  2. Newt, do I read this right... you are editing out the correct and proper use of the word pedunkle because it may be misconstrued by some to be a reference to something other than the fish? Wouldn't that be a little over-egging of the pudding, surely no person of that particular persuasion could possibly mis-interpret the meaning in the context which it was displayed, or am I mis-guided in crediting them with a modicum of intelligence ? In case it isn't clear, I find pc irritating and far too intrusive, anyone who would take offence should go get a life.
  3. I would go for the perch, never had a big one, come close though. Horses for courses I guess but a big perch is worth more to me than any carp, chub or catfish. mmm... the tinca might be nice too though...
  4. It never really occurred to me that people would prefer to know one's location, and as for the nicknames, when I first joined AN it seemed the thing to do so I just stuck with it. I take Cory's point about security though, I am not comfortable with internet banking though I have bought loads of stuff online. Alan
  5. Hope the review helps Tigger, Im well chuffed with mine.
  6. I've just bought a milo box myself after several months of looking, trying and generally poking them all in tackle shops. Yes its fairly heavy... but that's what trolleys are for eh? Yes its well built, aluminium construction pop rivetted so fairly easily repairable. Yes spares are available on ebay for hinges catches etc... Yes you can use preston on (off?) box accessories with the little red leg inserts. Am I happy with it... Yes I have already added a brolly arm and arm for my clever claw, wish I had a sliding step plate though, may have to part with more dosh.
  7. I didn't catch any news yesterday so it was a bit of a shock this morning when I read this post... so sad I've been a fan for years, thank you Richard for many years of pleasure, this morning I will be listening to Gilmours On an Island on which album Richard played.
  8. In Hindley opposite the library, there is a road which leads down to a church this is the North West Angling Centre, one of the biggest tackle shops in the area. If you talk to them they will advise you about the local clubs and costs to join, and where the waters are. I take it you already have an Environment agency rod licence which you can get from a post office. That's the starting point and take it from there.
  9. Robbie, it sounds like you were using too strong an elastic and ''bumped'' the fish off. For smaller fish use a lighter elastic, perhaps a number 8. You could also try sharpening your hooks, obvious I know but you would be amazed how quickly a hook can dull its point and not penetrate properly on a strike. Finally, striking... try a gentle but definite lift into a bite, avoid jerky movements. Tightlines, let us know how you get on.
  10. Nice one Tigger! I have had small brownies out of the duggie in the past and earlier this year my dad had a clonker which fought like a demon. Im not sure which swim you pictured but if its where I think it is, his fish was only about fifty yards downstream, the other side of the bridge, opposite the big tree. The water level certainly looks much better now than it was, maybe time to give it another go...
  11. A few words on our national anthem... The tune dates back to europe in the 17th century, its first known publication being in a hymnal ''thesaurus musicus'' published in 1740. Beethoven wrote some piano variations on it and it is used as a national tune in twenty or so nations inc. England (for over 200 years). It also features in the musical heritage of Sweden, Russia and Germany, quite apt considering the heritage of our Royal family. It is also the tune to an American hymn called... ''My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty'' which was written by an American Samuel Smith, a Baptist preacher from Boston Mass. who knew the tune as ''America'' His hymn originally of 5 stanzas was soon reduced to 4 because of a strong anti-British sentiment. Incidentally ''The Star Spangled Banner'' was not officially adopted as the U.S. national anthem until March 3rd 1931.
  12. My daughter flew out to Orlando on monday for her honeymoon, they were hoping to get away from the lousy summer weather we have been experiencing...
  13. I hear it holds trout, perch, and pike, but I imagine unless you have a boat it may be difficult to cast out far enough to get among them. The lake is very deep in parts, well over 100 feet, but shallow around the shoreline.
  14. Here we go... just because someone expresses a strong religious belief, that is no justification for being subject to abuse in their workplace, and how dare you accuse her of being a bigot? Way out of order. Having religious beliefs and cultural based rules is what fashioned this democratic (ish) country we live in, the 'law' as you put it is a product of our 'Christian' society. I am saddened that you feel there is no place for Christian beliefs in our Education, Health and Social Services. Finally, to try to make a connection between this ladies Christian belief and practises such as genital mutilation, the taking of life and other such nonsense is frankly laughable. The lunatics are indeed taking over the asylum... that is my final word on the matter. Goodnight
  15. I agree 100% with the lady in question, she was harrassed daily by other members of staff because of her christian beliefs. The service to the homosexual community wasn't being compromised in any way by her actions, so claims by stonewall and tatchell who always raises his head on these matters, that it was a permit to discriminate, are very wide of the mark and inflammatory as usual.
  16. I hope that when the chinese / Indians or whatever go out and buy their westernised lifestyles that they also need to fund them with wage rise demands. We were always being told jobs were going abroad to the far east because the populace there works for beans, well bring it on maybe things will revert a little in our favour. No-one has yet answered the question of why we appear to be spearheading the fight to save the planet (?) a tiny little island of 60 million people, already having some of the highest and most widespread taxation in the western world, we can't afford to be a world player anymore, we are becoming what used to be called a third world country. Alternative fuels... as oil availability declines more development will be put into other means of making our cars go, at the moment there is still a huge vested interest in keeping the status quo, but I have no doubt that we will still be driving around moaning about congestion in 25 years time. The reason for my conviction being the total inability of our nation to invest in and develop any proper public transport infrastructure. There are several minor successes in this area for instance, manchesters tram system, but it was only a couple of years ago that our government was refusing to fund an extended system whilst simultaneously proclaiming its success, there's a mixed message for you. Now of course we are to get UP TO 3 billion quid investment in exchange for agreeing to a cash cow. Incidentally why don't all the pollsters asking what we think of the idea try polling folk who have to drive 20 or 30 miles to get to the city for 7am. We should be looking at ways of keeping traffic flowing and therefore more fuel efficient, instead our local authorities increase the congestion with bus lanes, traffic calming (???) chicanes, speed humps and by closing alternative routes to traffic at peak times, and whatever happened to phased traffic lights? now its more like stop...go...stop...go... every few hundred yards, very fuel efficient I'm sure.
  17. Thanks for the info, think I'll be getting a card this weekend their stretch of the Douglas used to be members only.
  18. The Wigan DAA site appears to be down again, does anyone know how much are the 2008 membership subs for old crinklies? cheers.
  19. As far as I can remember the trenchy is long and thin and was very weedy, and it lies directly behind Ince park lake, adjacent to Seaman way. on the other side of the railway line. Hope this helps.
  20. So that's why Victoria Beckham is a rather strange shade of orange... too many carrots!
  21. Maybe I'm alone in this but an irritating trend which seems to be increasing is the over-use of quotations in posts. Is it really necessary to repeat the whole text of a post 200 words long, just to add '' I agree/disagree'' I get fed up seeing posts three pages long with maybe six genuine posts. Whatever happened to common sense editing, if you must use quotations try it sometime.
  22. Thanks Ayjay, I am a little reluctant to cold call after 8 years, he was an old guy then I think, but thanks for the link.
  23. Hard to see how a pike float would remain attached if the pike had bitten through the line, surely the float would be above the break in the line.....? Assuming the kids had the pike out of water for the 3 miles before releasing it they would have to be doing at least 12 miles an hour along the towpath which is some speed for the kids and a feat of endurance for the pike, wouldn't fancy its chances after that time...
