1. I have just returned from Ireland, went from 14/5/15 to 23/5/15 including journey days in a group of 8 anglers based at Shannon Harbour, have been going since 1989 so know the local venues to fish at this time of year. We arrived to find the Shannon and Suck rivers in the fields and the weather was atrocious for the first few days of the trip with low temperatures, rain, hail and extremely high winds which improved slightly on the last few days We still managed to catch everyday wherever we went. The days of 100lb bream bags are gone basically because there are so many roach on every single venue and in certain places I am sure the volume of roach in the rivers has pushed the bream out, in saying that the quality of the roach fishing was outstanding in quantity and quality with fish up to 2lb and the average size being 6oz - 8oz. I would say of our total catches 95% were roach, we did also catch pike, perch, rudd, hybrids, tench and the odd eel. On the eight days fishing we had we saw one other visiting UK angler. There is still quality fishing to be had but knowing exactly where to go is a bonus and we did not really fish at the optimum times of early morning or late evening.. The Guinness has not changed though, it was magnificent!!!!
2. Like most others on here was taken by my Dad to start mostly on the River Lea but he was no fisherman and we basically
muddled through.

Then joined Edmonton & Tottenham AC junior section in the sixties when I would guess I about twelve years old and used to go on there outings mostly on the Thames. Learnt quite a bit from the older guys there especially how to look after
their kit when they went down the pub. Remember the man who helped run the junior section who was Ron Oliver a bit of a legend and a great fisherman.

Still muddling through now fifty years on.
3. What magnificent creatures.
4. Hi Budgie Could not say for sure but pretty certain that is the case. Best regards Graham
5. There are zander in Stanborough lake but you are not allowed to fish for them and any caught accidently are to be killed. I think that is the current state of play but am happy to be corrected by anybody in the know.
6. Hi Jay Go to the Davis Tackle site and then read the Throop reports, couple of telephone numbers there and an email address you can use, the guys there are generally pretty helpful.
7. Check out the lakes first Dales last I heard Reggie and Ronnie lived there as well
8. Hi Dales Dont know where you are fishing the Lea obviously but I would say the crayfish problem has receded slightly in the last few years. Around seven to eight years ago it was possible to go crayfishing below Fieldes Weir where the old power station water intake is and catch up to 500 in a two to three hour stint with four drop nets and the river was absolutely stiff with them upstream and down. I fish the Lea reasonably regularly and in the last couple of seasons certainly in the Rye House, Fieldes Weir, Stort catchment area have noticed a decline in their numbers. In fact I fished the Stort a week or so ago up above the first lock from Fieldes Weir and caught lots of small fish on the bottom without seeing one of the little buggers. Although interestingly while I was fishing there were a couple of mink coming from the far bank and hunting under the towpath side and returning with their catch to what I guess were youngsters on the far side. I think they were searching for the crayish says it all really one invasive species eating amother invasive species. I have tried over the last few seasons not to overfeed baits especially maggots in groudbait as once they find it they seem to invite all their mates and have relied more on hempseed especially in the warmer months as an attractor for the coarse fish whilst fishing different baits in amongst it. Cold winter temperatures certainly slow them down and I have had some good success fishing bread for the chub and more than a few trout. If it is cold I have never found them a problem with deadbaits for piking the bigger problem being our EE friends who seem to be on a mission to remove every pike from the river if that is not politically correct I apologise but I am afraid it is a fact. The Lea holds some surprisingly good fish in places and there are certain areas where you have got it to yourself especially in winter let us know how you get on. I have
9. Went to Rib Valley Fishery Hertfordshire which was absolutely full of ducklings of all sorts of sizes and it was very noticeable how the broods declined relative to their sizes with the ones that were just virtually out of the eggs consisting of 9-12 ducklings right through to the larger ones that were down to one or two left and that is in the lake there that is virtually pikeless. Did not catch mutch apart from roach and rudd up to about 8oz but absolute joy to be there early yesterday morning all sorts of birds to be seen.
10. I would think Dales Camilla does it for him
11. Nich, You can ring me any evening after 20.00 on 01992 442630
12. Unfortunately Nich that is not part of the lough that I know I have fished Lanesborough, Galley Bay, Hudson Bay, Barrymore Point, Athlone and Inny Mouth and spent many a boating holiday on the lough, is it pike fishing or coarse fishing you are interested in?
13. Hi Nicholas Whereabouts are you staying might be able to help a bit as I know some of the areas around the lough but it is a very big place.
14. I have been to Chilliwack BC a couple of times in last six years to fish the Fraser for great white sturgeon but have had a couple of days after the salmon if the "pinks" are in the river when you are there you will have some great sport. Google Cascade Fishing Adventures for up to date information I have only ever been with them but Marc Laynes the guy who runs it knows the river inside out as do all his guides and it is just a fantastic place to go, the fishing, the wildlife, the scenery etc are just second to none.
15. Davis Tackle, Bargates, Christchuch, right next to the Royalty Fishery
16. Have a look at Nazeing Meads fishery on the Lee Valley Regional Parks site, which is very close to the waters you mentioned, would seem to meet most of the angling requirements you mention. I fish it mainly for pike in the winter not the easiest of waters mind you but there are plenty of big fish of most species in there, especially bream I have had them to 11lb and seen others topping that make that one look small but nobody over there really seems to target them as they are more interested in the carp.
17. I fished it a few times in the early eighties with some success, no specific memories about the pike but what I do remember was the amount of quality roach that were in there. When I was taken there the first time I said to the guy who introduced me to the fishery what are we going to do for bait then? He took a drop net from the back of his car dropped it in the culvert and about five minutes later hauled it up with about twenty pound of different sized roach in it. I was gobsmacked took me the rest the day to recover.
18. I have not fished or been to Warren Pond for over thirty years but unless it has moved it is over the road and down the slope from the Royal Forest Hotel (providing the pub is still there) used to be next to a tennis club. Caught some good tench there night fishing years ago.
19. I think Boldbear means Stanborough lakes you will find all relevant details with a quick Google.
20. Had the odd one or two out of River Lea this season.
21. Hi Flud I know there has not been a lot of interest in this topic and you have probably forgotten you even asked but it has been really bugging me as I think I know most of the waters in this area. Anyway I was talking to someone today about fishing as you do and he mentioned a certain Manor Farm, Wormley and I am pretty sure thats the place you are looking for, holds some sizeable carp and also some large catfish, only about 3 or 4 swims on the lake as it is not very big. Hope that is of some help.
22. You wont find too many barbel in Dobbs Weir but Kings Weir and Fishers Green are well worth a try. The Lea above Hertford holds barbel but most stretches are tightly held there is a day ticket stretch at Stanborough Lake where I have had a few mostly as it is getting dark. Verulum AC have a great stretch in the Wheathamstead area but you will need to join. Further afield the Thames holds lots of barbel but it is a big river and location is everything, I have had a few from the Laleham area. The BFW site is a great site for some ideas but the members do not give away a lot on where to fish.
