    Snow......

We had snow today - I agreed to go shore fishing today, my fingers were nearly falling of it was so cold ... caught 2 wee whiting, and a flaming velvet crab ..... in short, I blanked. Thinking back to the coldness and snow falling .... we were mad to go out in it. Gillies
  2. David - had posted a reply, but seems to have vanished ... hmmm. No, Im not pro, just spend a lot of time with camera in my hand when Im not working. I do occasional press work, protrait work, promo work. I take my hat of to you been a wedding photographer, I do some post processing of shots for a local wedding photographer ... the pressure of getting the big day photos right would be to much for me I mostly shoot landscape, my favourite subject ... and do a wee bit of birding, though my current lens line up not quite good enough for serious birding, am toying with idea of a 400mm next year. Gillies
  3. John - as they say its not the camera, its the person behind it ... and thats so true. Some of my favourite shots Ive taken were taken with point and shoot cameras in auto mode. Gillies
  4. What I have right now is. Canon 20D (dslr) + Grip Canon 300D (dslr) + Grip Lenses: Canon 50mm F1.8, Canon 18-55mm, Canon 28-135mm IS, Canon 17-40mm F4 L, Canon 70-200mm F4 L, Sigma 70-300 APO II Macro, Sigma 20mm F1.8 Misc: Canon 550ex Speedlite Flashgun, Tamron Teleconverter 1.4, various filters (Polarizing, ND Grad, Cokin system), Manfrotto 190 Tripod, Slik 300DX Tripod, Velbon telescopic tripod ..... lots and lots and lots of other bits of pieces. Fuji 2800 (Point & Shoot) Pentax Optio S (Point & Shoot) I usually shoot with the 20D, and either the Sigma 20mm F1.8, Canon 28-135mm IS or Canon 70-200mm F4 L attached, I use the 300D as a backup, or when out fishing with the 18-55mm or Sigma 70-300. Really happy with the copy of the 70-200mm F4 I got, the sharpness and colour of the shots is outstanding ... its my favourite telephoto lens that I have, and for when I need to go wide, or doing landcapes I shoot with my relatively cheap Sigma 20mm F1.8, at 2.8 and above its gives tremendous quality. When doing stuff for Press, its usally my 28-135mm IS (very good quality, and usefull range) or the Sigma 20mm. Gillies
  5. Here - Stornoway, Isle of Lewis is twinned with Pendleton, South Carolina USA. Gillies
  6. Finepix - really like your B&W shot, well done ... looks like some creative thought went into it! Gillies
  7. Nice catch there Shaun - made the ducking you got worth it. Winter sounds like you and your mates are having pretty decent fishing down there ... good to see good catches coming from the shore! Might give it a 2-3 hours later today of the shore to see if anythings interested, depending on how much work I get done in morning. Gillies
  8. I got a VOIP phone a few months ago and use it along with Skype (SkypeOut) .... is fantastic for calling over to the US, and for national calls. The costs are extremely cheap ... is great, and if you have someone with a VOIP phone at other end ... its free. Gillies
  9. Agree with whats been said, its all to do with the ink - you can buy the printer cheap enough .... but running it can be costly .... thats why I can't see past Epson Photo Printers, and you can pick up ink for as low as £0.90p per cartridge ......... which is a massive saving compared to HP and Lexmark printers where cartridges are normally well over £10. For all my big prints I get Photobox to do them, for small 6x4 and the odd A4 I use my Epson ... and am very happy with the results, and can get lots of 6x4s out of it .... and a lot of A4s. http://www.ukdvdr.co.uk is pretty handy place for ink, paper, memory cards etc etc I got one of those small HP printers last year, one that does 6x4s with a wee screen on it .... it does give you a good print, and handy just throwing the memory cart into it, cropping the image on the wee screeen and pressing print ...... I got a lot of prints out of it, but the ink cost over around £15 .... I can do the same things and more with my Epson, so I gave the HP to my sister. I'd say say go Epson .... my 2 pence worth, keep away from HP and Lexmark. Gillies
  10. With the year coming an end, as usual just wondering what your best fish was this year, or your most memorable trip was? I didnt have many big fish of note this year - most enjoyable trip was one where I got three new species in a matter of minutes with a Cuckoo Ray, Turbot and Tub Gurnard .... and catching Spotted Rays two at a time. Also did a lot of shore fishing this year, and had some great catches of Thornbacks and lots of other species, looking forward to next year. Gillies
  11. With the NAD running so close to us up here in the Western Isles of Scotland, the weather changes we have seen this year are pretty noticable - the Winter Gales (storms) are coming much earlier and more frequent, there seems to be a bit more rain also ..... going to be interesting to see what Winter is going to be bring. Gillies
  12. A very sad loss ....... I think an actor who will be remembered by many many fans ... his Karate Kid role is legendary and will ensure imortality ..... and the movie also gave fame to Bonsia Trees. Like I'm sure many other kids at that time, after seen The Karate Kid ... I rushed out and took Karate Lessons, and thourghly enjoyed it. Think my favourite line in the first movie is when Daniel has cuts and bruises on his head, and he tells Miyagi he fell of his bike, and Miyagi replies "lucky no hurt hand" ..... a quick and witty response A true legend as FinePix says .... nearly everyone who seen Karate Kid remembers "wax on, wax off". 18. Up here in the Western Isles, they take your arm of for Herring .... one of my favourite fish on the plate, and of course when smoked (kippered) .....mmmmm getting hungry. Hope you enjoy !!!!!!!!!!! Had a lot of Thornbacks on Herring as bait this year. Gillies
  19. The wind is howling pretty nasty here just now - impressive sight in afternoon with all the waves crashing over the harbour walls onto the roads .... was "very" hard to walk in though. Have a shore competition in the morning (of a beach) .... we need our heads checked !!!!!!!!! Have funny feeling it may be cancelled. Gillies
  20. I dont trust any of them ... what I usually do is go to: BBC, Metcheck, and Theyr.net and take an average ... hope its going to be somewhere near correct. My experieces are: BBC - Often way way off Metcheck - Wind up to 15 mph out sometimes, either over or under Theyr - Gives a rough idea of what to expect, sometimes slightly out Gillies
  21. Were supposed to get it pretty bad up here overnight - gusts to 100 mph to be expected ... should be a pretty rough one. Right now not to bad, but is getting up all the time. Gillies
  22. Good Post Ian - having never fished for Tope - I thourghly enjoyed reading it. Gillies
  23. Tried a beach mark today thats not normally fished often - got a very nice surprise on my first cast when I got a plump Sea Trout of 1 lb 2 oz. That was followed by a Mackerel, 3 nice Dabs and a Coalie. Very enjoyable day, all fish caught on Mackerel bait. Gillies
  24. Great series of photos Den - made me smile Gillies
  25. Not had the chance to photo anything of interest for past week or so - apart from fish at fishing trips .... this photo is not very good, but is taken at over half a mile away ... when I seen it going out in the stormy weather from my window this morning could not resist not clicking away. Wish I had been down the shore to get some nice close up shots of it pounding the waves. Gillies
