  1. I don't think that can be correct. I got the info on his Patronage from here.
  2. Real handy that Google. He is also patron saint of the following: Aragon, agricultural workers, archers, armourers, Beirut, Lebanon, Boy Scouts, butchers, Canada, Cappadocia, Catalonia, cavalry, chivalry, Constantinople, Crusaders, England, equestrians, farmers, Ferrara Italy, field hands, field workers, Genoa Italy, Georgia, Germany (now that really tickles me), Gozo, Greece, herpes, horsemen, horses, husbandmen, Istanbul, knights, lepers, leprosy, Lithuania, Malta, Moscow, Order of the Garter, Palestine, Palestinian Christians, plague, Portugal, riders, saddle makers, saddlers, skin diseases, skin rashes, soldiers, syphilis (I love it), Teutonic Knights and Venice [ 23. 3. He is also the patron saint of Georgia. The Georgian flag looks a bit like the English St. George's Cross too. [ 23. April 2004, 08:53 PM: Message edited by: corydoras ]
  4. Yeah! I get hassle for that too. One of my mates is always threatening to get a 'sea box' that I have to put a quid in every time that I begin a sentence with, "When I was at sea"
  5. quote:Originally posted by Scapanapper: ...I was at sea. "Where's Mafeking relief???" I did not know you were at sea. What did you do? I spent 9 years in the MN. It must have been the sea water right enough
  6. quote:Originally posted by Scapanapper: Having lived in both Scotland and Wales, I cannot recall either St's day being a public holiday. I am willing to be corrected. Cheers Scapa After a quick search on Google it looks like you are correct mate. It must be age playing tricks on me. I was sure that we used to get a day off school on St. Andrews Day when we were kids. [ 23. April 2004, 07:38 PM: Message edited by: corydoras ]
  7. If St. Goeorges Day is so important to the English, how come it is not a Bank Holiday, like St Andrews Day in Scotland and St. David's Day in Wales?
  8. Well now, fishbase have the distribition of the thick-lipped mullet as 65°N - 12°N, 24°W - 36°E. Since Thurso is only at 58°N we ought to be able to find thick-lipped mullet all the way round the UK coastline if Fishbase tells the truth. [ 15. April 2004, 02:04 PM: Message edited by: corydoras ]
  9. Well said!. Maaybe we should be like our Antipodean cousins and make voting compulsory? [ 13. April 2004, 05:17 PM: Message edited by: corydoras ]

I know that they are a 'tad' noisy. I had forgotton aboout them needing to have the engine running all the time. Why would they be illegal in Poole harbour though? [ 02. April 2004, 02:53 PM: Message edited by: corydoras ]

Then again it just might make a worthy chariot for a mulleteer! I can think of one or two real nice spots that I could easily fish with one of them, but which would be illegal to fish from the shore

50-50 that if one really knew how to drive one that one could do it, if U get my drift
  15. Much as I do hate to see things banned I also believe in democracy, so if the majority of the population are in favour of prohibiting smoking in pubs etc. like Ireland has then I would go along with that.

50-50 that the first one would?
  17. Yes, but you must admit that this is also part of the fun, because there is always that chance that one will take
  18. I think you have lost the plot Elton. This is what happens when a country does not invest in its infrastructure for generations. Its just as well that the Victorians did not have the same attitude to investing in public works as we do today or we would have no roads and no railways (an no canals to fish in either)
  19. How about both Bush AND Blair getting re-elected...
  20. quote: Originally posted by Ferret1959: Fags sales people, manufactures, tobacco production???????? I am a smoker. I am unlikely to smoke a great deal less just because I am not allowed to smoke a cigarette with a pint. Doctors, nurses, you wouldn't need as many. We have a chronic shortage of doctors and nurses, I don't think making smoking in public places illegal is going to make much difference. I say ban smoking globally. I say ban peeps like you who want to go around banning things.
  21. Us Celts have been around even longer than Celtic. I am a Scot myself and I have no idea about the pronounciation, although I think there may be something sectarian behind it. There must be some Celtic fan out there who knows the answer.
  22. About bloody time too. Maybe we could fish for them? A hair-rigged Friskie, or fly fishing with a mouse pattern. It would be something to do in the close season
