If St. Goeorges Day is so important to the English, how come it is not a Bank Holiday, like St Andrews Day in Scotland and St. David's Day in Wales?

I think you have lost the plot Elton. This is what happens when a country does not invest in its infrastructure for generations. Its just as well that the Victorians did not have the same attitude to investing in public works as we do today or we would have no roads and no railways (an no canals to fish in either)
