  1. Following on from the 'My town isn't that bad ?!?!' topic, I thought the above may be a bit of fun.

I would like to nominate Hodieda, Yemen as the town God is most likely to stick the hose in if he decides that the world needs an enema.

May I suggest that one only nominates somewhere where one has visited?

  2. Ahh Leon!, now you are putting me through mental torture by making me choose between my homeland and the land of our oldest ally.

Inverary and Loch Awe are both old stomping grounds of mine (I was born close by in Helensburgh). I like both Scotland and France almost equally. The main reason that I have my little hideaway in Luc Sur Mer is because that is very close to where my ex-wife and my two children live.

Us Scots and the French have much in common including our laissé faire attitude to life and the high esteem we both hold for our charming English neighbours

I did not know that mullet could be caught in Inverary but I know that they can be caught around the confluence of the rivers Leven and Clyde near Dumbarton. This is another old stomping ground of mine, but it considerably less picturesque than Inverary.

BTW the ‘funny mullet’ in your photo looks suspiciously like a Dragonet (Callionymus lyra) The males are particularly handsome during the breeding season and look as if they belong on some tropical coral reef rather than the depths of a Scottish sea loch.

  3. Excalibur:

I had a less than splendid view of shooting, until I took it up seriously.

What do you mean by shooting? If you mean blasting at half-tame pheasants from 30 yards I am not sure that I approve myself.

  4. When I was a nipper we used to make lures for perch out of a big (about an inch or so long) sea swivel with a treble on one end.

Up Wick way they make lures out of bent 4" or 6" nails flattened at each end. Then they drill a small hole through the flattened bit and attach a treble to one end and a swivel to the other with standard split rings. Supposed to be deadly for pollack.

that is a nice photo corydoras    :)

    Andy

It's a nice place. I bought a little hideaway there a month or so ago and I had my first week in it last week. It was not really meant to be a fishing holiday but since I am only about 80 metres from the beach and I had my 8 year old with me I thought we should gou out and have a little dangle.

Did'nt catch so much as a little flounder or a even a shore crab. I never saw anyone else catch anything either.

  6. Was at my little hideaway in Luc Sur Mer in Normandy and thought I would try a little spot of pier fishing. Did'nt catch a sodding thing all week! :( .

At least the sunsets made up for it (at least a bit) :) .

  7. Well that saves me asking what the Nottingham shop is like then. :D

To be honest I don't think that the majority of the stuff I saw in France was much cheaper than similar stuff here, but I did not really have time to look.

It was the amazing range of lures that were on display that amazed me. I have never seen so many under one roof. I am not really a lure fisherman but I must admit to buying a plug and a couple of spinners.

Not had much of a chance to go to the Canal in Nottingham since I last posted abd anyway I cannot see me buying a rod licence until the mullet season is over.

  8. This is bound to upset some, but faint heart never sh@gged a pig!

    Q) What's the difference between Joe Jordan and Ayrton Senna?

    A) Joe Jordan knows how to take a corner!

  9. RUDD:

Going back about 15 years I was in Narbonne (South of France).

We went into a big store and I was also amazed at the amount of tackle on show.

What was more amazing was there were shotguns, rifles and a whole load of other hand weapons for sale!

    Hi Rudd

You don't need to go to a sports store to buy shotguns, rifles etc. where I go in France. You can buy all of that sort of stuff in the main branch of Carrefour (a bit like Tesco's on steroids) in Caen at Mondeville.
