  1. Here's a link to some satellite images of the region. Very humbling. http://homepage.mac.com/demark/tsunami/

    Crikey!

I saw this on another forum a few days ago. The original link is here. http://www.lostenterprises.com/prod/newsAr...ical.php?ID=505 Unnecesary and sad for the shark really. Depending what type of Mako (long or short fin) it could be a protected species.
  3. There's a little fishery about 5 minutes from Junction 9 M27 that has a mixed bag of everything including grass carp in a smallish lake. This was where I started out and learned how to float fish catching lots of silver fish and small carp and the more than occasional monster too. Not the most scenic but it's out of the way and quiet unlike Broadlands where I found the traffic noise from the motorway can get tiring. It's been a few years since I was there but at the time it was run by a very nice elderly couple. Tickets were £5 back then. I think the place is called River Farm Trout Fishery and it's on Fontley Road (or lane) north of the junction with Segensworth Rd and slightly past where it goes under the railway bridge. Hope that helps.
  4. Hi folks my brain cell is a little overloaded so once again: Above Gaters Mill - private fishing. Gaters Mill to The Swan - no free fishing? The Swan to Mans Bridge - I think free fishing. Riverside Park Mans Bridge to Woodmill Lane - free fishing? Riverside Park Woodmill Lane to Cobden Bridge - free fishng? Following downstream there is another railway bridge joining St Denys to Bitterne which is below Riverside Park and Cobden Bridge. Does tidal mean no fishing?
  5. I have had great success with crucians on my local lake. Can't stop catching them! Here's what I use: 4lb main line drennan 2bb onion bulk shot around float micro swivel to join hooklength 3lb hooklength 10 inches with a no6 dropper 8 inches from the size 12 hook Plumb the depth and shot that float right down to a dimple. I normally have the micro swivel just holding bottom instead of the dropper. I fish hookable small pellets or punched meat or paste depending what's in my bag over small trout pellets. The crucian like them all. I don't use worms etc now because it's a hassle for me and you can't keep them in the freezer. Bites for me are extremely positive. If I get dithery bites I can't hit then I haven't plumbed accurately or something is not set up right. The float will either bob a couple of times or lift up then slowly submerge. Wait and watch the float. Sometimes it submerges then stops just under the surface. Wait some more and it will move again! Only stike when it submerges and disappears! I manage to hit 8/10 of these bites by being patient. I get the odd bream and a few tench but most of the fish are crucians. I fish 3 feet from pads so near but not right next to them. Phew! Had to share and good luck with the crucians!
  6. It's been a while I forgot all about this post. Thanks for the bump Elton. Hoppy, I think ultima pro match is a reasonably good line at lower breaking strains considering its strength to diameter. I tried out 2lb bs just to compare and didn't have the same problems as with the higher breaking strains. So I consigned it to the cupboard. I've moved on to drennan double strength which I have found to be very good but less supple than ultima mono I've used. A bit more expensive but at least no worries! I highly recommend trying this one.
  7. Has anyone used this line before? It's a reduced diameter sinking line that I am trying out for hooklengths. I normally just use ultima grey mist but the shop ran out and said try this stuff. I got a 5lb 0.13mm spool. I always use a palomar to join hooks and swivels and never had problems before with grey mist or maxima. I always take great care tying rigs etc at home and always retie anything that looks strange but with this new stuff 50% of the knots are no good and break when I tighten them down. However they all look fine to my eye but break nevertheless when tested. I've landed good tench and 10lb carp on this stuff so I know it's up to the job but when it breaks so easily just testing a knot it just adds a bit of uncertainty to everything. Anything I can do about it?
  8. I'm a bit concerned about rod protection now I was told that the slightest scratch on a graphite rod can cause a stress point. Is this really true? I've always carried my 2 rods made-up with velcro bands so tackling up took 2 minutes but they are otherwise unprotected. My rods are all 3 piece so maximum length is under 5'. Could anyone reccomend a sleeve or bag or something that can fit my 2 (max 3 ) made up rods but is not as long and cumbersome as those 6' jobs? I only need to carry rods so I'm not really looking at quivers or huge holdalls. The best (ie shortest) I've found is the shimano signature ready rod sleeve thats 5'2" long and takes up to 3 rods. It's almost perfect length for me. Good buy or not?
  9. Cheers Andy I'll try that. I ordered them off the internet and that place said it's hard for them to get the spools only grr.
  10. Hi all Does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of just the spools for these reels? Information on how and where is greatly appreciated. I'm waiting for a couple of rear drag Inspiras which come with an aluminium match spool and a plastic deeper spool. I'd like some extra aluminium match spools to hold different line.
  11. OK had another short session this morning to refine the technique somewhat. Here's what happened: I like the size 12 hook so stuck with it. The float was a drennan stillwater blue - the finest tip I could find. Used just enough paste to make a little worm shape on the shank. This seemed to work wonders because I got lots of small bream and roach. The bites were difficult to hit and I always waited for the float to disappear. Next I tried hair rigging a small lump on a pellet. Didn't get many bites on this but the ones I did get were solid. Got 3 tench. I think I like the plain hook better.
  12. Hi everyone, I gave paste a good try for the first time this evening at my local lake. Just a simple paste of trout pellet powder and eggs. The fish seemed pretty keen - had lots of enquiries on the float and the quivertip. BUT I only managed to hook the really suicidal ones - 4 nice tench from countless missed strikes. I was using a size 12 hook and moulding the paste around it. I tried different sizes of paste either hiding the whole hook or leaving the tip exposed. What's the best way to put a paste like this on a plain hook? I'm not too keen on using paste springs and other gizmos.
  13. I see the logic but in my experience there is a difference that is probably because some drags will stick a bit before giving line I've always set the drag by pulling line from the rod tip. This way I almost always end up with a looser drag than if I had yanked it directly from the reel. The rod usually isn't fully compressed so I also have a small margin for error. Both help with sticky reels. Hmm maybe I should shell out for a better reel.
