  1. Got to say folks, enjoyed the invasion onto Maggotdrowners. Good humoured and a blinding idea. Nice to see people in it just for the crack.
  2. It doesn't list all of them, but there are a few good pointers HERE.
  3. AWESOME!!!!! There is no better place in the whole world!! Take a pair of flip flops, some decent books and chill out big style. Definitely take the snorkelling trip. Cheap as chips and the reef is unbelievable. Turtles, octopus, sharks, massive grouper fish. It's like swimming in a tropical aquarium. Night fishing is wicked, even my missus like it. Casting fishing is cheaper than the big game fishing and watching fish hit big surface lures is heart stopping. The beach bar was usually empty and is nice to spend a quiet night with the missus. Fresh coconuts you can just pick up off the floor. If you take something to remove the fibre husk from around them, you can eat fresh coconut every day - it's beautiful and not as dry and much creamier than you get in the supermarkets here. I took wire cutters and pliers 'cos I took a travel rod and my pike gear until I got there and found out you're not allowed to fish from the Island, but when you see it you'll know why they put the rules in place. The food is spectacular. I'm not a fish lover but the way they do it over there is something else. You will have a brilliant time. Of all the places I've ever been on holiday, The Maldives is by far the best place I've ever been to without question. I could easily drop out and become a beach bum there. Frodo I am so jealous. Apart from the 11 hour flight. Your welcome to that. Let us know what you think of the place when you get back. Or you can post something from the internet cafe there!!!
  4. Where you going to Frodo? Only we went there Christmas last year to Meeru and we did all the night fishing and that - excelent fun. Beautiful place. Loads of sport fishing to be had. Barracuda, wahoo, sailfish.........
  5. A hell of a subject this. We have so many angling bodies and no public figurehead. Well, the CA and Charles Jardine take it upon themselves to speak out, but that's a contentious issue in itself. It's something I have thought about that for all the 5 million anglers (?) there are ion this country paying out millions and millions of pounds for our sport year in, year out, yet the only voice that speaks out gets shouted down. Don't get me wrong I'm not a supporter of the CA but they're the only ones who are ever quoted in the National press when it comes to angling matters. As for a joint body - well that needs serious looking at and implementation ASAP but how does the every day angler like me go about affecting this. Do I join each angling body and get them to buck their ideas up? Expensive and totally impractical. Which angling body should I join? Which is the more effective? None have lobbied me for my support in any shape or form. If a group needs members then shouldn't it have a responsibility to let those potential members what they stand for and what benefits those people might receive. There has been a similar discussion HERE.
  6. On a punt on Bury Hill's Estate lake for some tench. I'd like a double (fat chance) but I'll settle for anything.
  7. These look dirt cheap> http://www.ccmoore.com/ But I can't speak for them as I haven't used them yet. But at the prices for hemp and Mega Hemp, I'll be giving them a go very soon.
  8. quote:Originally posted by Beebs: Aren't there 3 million anglers in Britain? quote:Originally posted by Cranfield: Before anyone quotes how many Anglers there are in the UK, check out on the EA website, how many licences were sold last year. It wasn't a statement it was a question, hence the question mark. It's a number I've seen and heard being thrown around. I don't know exactly how many people go fishing any more than anyone else, but like I said earlier, it's totally irrelevant. 2 million, 3 million, 0.5 million. Quoting EA licence sales is half the story. Without wanting to get bogged down in the morality of licence dodging, but there are still a percentage that don't buy one. Scottish, Irish and sea anglers don't need one. So then you're only talking about licence paying coarse and game anglers in England and Wales. The largest participation sport in this country has poor representation and a part of that blame has to fall on angler's own apathy also.
  9. Never disagreed with you barbless. I argued very strongly before the Lib/Liv march that I thought it was a bad idea to be seen to jump into bed with the CA and nothing has changed my mind since then. What I was saying is that like it or not, the CA are using angling as one of their netwrok of suppport groups whether we approve or disapprove. My point was that the angling bodies are not speaking out for us. I don't like the fact that the CA have conveniently used anglers to boost their numbers so it would appear that hunting has better support than it does. After all, how many people associated the march with angling? What was public perception? That anglers are marching to show their numbers against a growing anti movement? Or that a load of pro-hunt people were marching on London, some of them are fishermen who probably support hunting as well? The CA have been very clever in using us to increase their ranks and we have let it happen. Where do you turn? Where are the Angling bodies? Who is standing up for those of us who disagree with us being lumped in with the CA? That is why I think we are pretty much screwed. If the angling bodies don't represent the people who spend their days and weekends on the banks then they need to shaken up big style. There are too many of them and they are too distanced from everyday fishermen. When was the last time one of them canvassed you for support? I think angling needs ONE governing body as it's public voice and coarse, game and sea should have their own representatives inside that body. Democratically elected by the people who participate week in week out - us. I'm a member of a few a fishing forums and I have never seen one angling body representative post anything and to my mind, the internet is where the most information is shared and views discussed yet none have any representation here.
  10. I agree, but at least the CA are out there in the public eye. They might well be using anglers to champion their cause, but where are the angling bodies? I don't know how many members of the CA actually hunt, shoot or fish but I would have a stab and guess that there are more anglers in the UK than there are hunters and shooters, yet angling seems to be a small section of a bigger organisation. I think angling and anglers are potentially a much bigger force than the CA, but what are we doing to help ourselves? Aren't there 3 million anglers in Britain? Quite a considerable number of voters isn't it? 3 million unified voices is a massive show of strength, but we're not even trying to pull together.
  11. From what I can see, it's irrelevant arguing whether anglers should join the CA. Which anglers? Coarse anglers? Game anglers? Sea anglers? Shouldn't fishermen make an attempt to unify themselves into a potentially much stronger force to be reckoned with? Wouldn't angling itslef with its millions of participants be a much stronger voice? But the problem with saving angling is anglers themselves. Most can't be bothered to get off their arses to help save their sport. They think other people will look out for their sport for them. Well it's not anyone elses sport it's ours. I probably spend as much on tackle and bait each year as some more famous 'names'. It's just as much my sport as it is Matt Hayes' or John Wilson's. Carp anglers hate Match anglers, Match anglers hate pleasure anglers, game anglers look down on coarse fishermen. When it comes down to it and if we ever get our heads from so far up our own backsides, we might just realise that we all sit by the side of some water with line and a hook trying to catch fish. Why all the politics? The answer is simple enough and everybody knows it and everywhere you look on forums on the internet you always get the same answer and that is unity. But can you get unity between anglers? I can't see how anglers can claim any kind of unity when we can't even agree what is an animal or not. If I wanted to join an angling body where do you look? NFA? SAA? Salmon and trout association? NFSA? CA? ACA? NAA? PAC? What if I did coarse, sea and game fishing? Would I have to join them all? We've got too many angling bodies for our own good, in my opinion and I don't think any of them represent me, my needs or how I think things should be done. Is fishing cruel? Some think yes some think no, but squabbling over viewpoints is pointless. You're not going to change someone elses opinion so why bother arguing? We'll wake up one day and find our hobby has been outlawed and we'll have nobody but ourselves to blame because because we spent too much time bickering over the petty things and not enough time concentrating on what should be the most important bit which is working together on the commonality to all aspects of our sport instead of picking at the little differences.
  12. I think you'll find this is quite normal from what I've seen on various boards and my own personal experience. Very quick at taking your money, not so quick at giving you your order or giving your money back. Good excuses though. Usually the one about Postal strikes in London sorting office. Funny that other stuff I've ordered from the Channel Islands gets through without the same trouble.

    sea sickness

Probably sounds stupid, but try not to think about it. I've only been on boats twice when it's been really bad and others have been ill around me. The first time, I sat there and felt rough, but once I got up and walked around a bit and did some fishing, it took my mind off it. Also, try not to let your head move about too much, it's the fluid sloshing around in your inner ear that makes you feel ill, if the boat is tossing one way to another, try to move your upper body to compensate. I'm not convinced on travel sickness tablets, my missus tried them last time we went boat fishing and she was still seasick after an hour and had to go back to port. I tried the 'keeping your head steady' method and I managed to stick it out for 8 hours. I'm no old sea dog myself either.
  14. I know one of the top and most succesful carpers in the country fishes with a red sweatshirt and blue tracksuit bottoms. It doesn't seem to harm his catch rate.
  15. ....... end up divorced. With any luck.
  16. A few years back (in a not so glorious past) I entered an 'Endurance' style competition and one of the challenges was eating maggots. I should point out that extreme amounts of alcohol had been consumed and I eventually chomped my way through over half a pint. Made sure I had crunched them all as I didn't fancy the thought of them wriggling around in my stomach. Didn't get ill though. Well I did, but I couldn't tell you if it was the maggots or the booze. I think it might have been the booze.
  17. Absolutely. I was looking at that very reel last night. I had an excellent bit of advice yesterday because I was looking into getting a baitcasting outfit. I was put me onto the BassPro shop and they are spot on with pricing. I've started ordering loads of stuff from the States. They still beat us hands down on pricing and with the pound being strong......well the maths is the simple bit and I don't mind waiting a little longer.
  18. Rear drag for me, every time. It just feels natural to me. In fact, a reel like in the picture DG would be ideal! Shimano, twin handle, rear drag WITH fighting drag! OOohhh it makes me go all gooey at the thought!
  19. Double handle definitely. I think they're better balanced than the singles and they feel smoother, but whether this is due to the handle or the fact that the GTE versions of my Shimanos are better specced than the RE's is open to debate. I've got a Sahara 3000 RE and I do like it, but I've also got the same reel as a twin handled GTE and it's the GTE that is the first choice every time. Also I find you can crank a twin handle harder and easier than a single, a bit like using a can opener. I also like the fighting drag on the GTEs, very useful.
  20. I mainly fished the Loddon and had some great sport. Most people I spoke to in the area I fished complained that the chub and barbel fishing had poor. I thought I'd try for something different and caught more good sized perch this Summer than ever.
  21. To be honest, the only way I can see for angling to be represented effectively is by representation by each discipline to report to an official angling spokesgroup. There's no point trying to get coarse anglers, pleasure anglers, game anglers etc to agree to anything collectively because they won't. Each sees their own discipline as the superior so why not each have their own representative to an overall, impartial angling body who would be the official voice for us all? Each style of fishing could elect its own representative who would report to an official appointed spokesperson. Hard work I know, as each would want their own chosen sport favoured, but surely in these well informed, media driven times, we can get a few impartial representatives who can see the bigger picture beyond their preferred style? There seem to be a few 'self appointed' spokesmen for angling, but I didn't vote for them, did you? [ 28. January 2004, 01:35 AM: Message edited by: Beebs ]
  22. What about rivers, canals, should there be more money put into them? As far as I can see, lake fishing is thriving and river fishing is pretty slack, where I have mainly frequented in the last year. I have turned up to lakes and found not one available swim, but gone to a river and had whole stretches to myself. Since there seem to be more lake anglers than river anglers then maybe there is a need for more money to be put into lakes to maintain their upkeep due to angling pressure. Which is fine for me, since being selfish I get to experience the untouched rivers in relative tranquility.
  23. No, not all bad at all. Did an overnighter last year and there were a couple of youngsters who (I found out the next day) had stayed all night with no bivvy or sleeping bag when I was tucked up in a 5 season job. They got quite a few tips and advice from me and the guy in the next swim along. The guy next to me was doing well on carp and I was bagging off a shoal of bream. The lads were just curious to know what we were doing different. Between myself and my neighbour, we tried to encourage the lads and give them a few tips and help them out with some bait which they were extremely grateful for and were nothing but pleasant and polite all the time. Before they left they both came over and thanked us for our help and to say goodbye. I'm as guilty as anyone for tarring all youngsters with the same brush, but was very pleasantly surprised by this. I remeber when I was that age and keen as mustard to know all about fishing and catching fish. People who throw rubbish in the water and cause disruption are not confined to any age group. I've seen appalling behaviour by people a lot older. Litter louts and yobs are not restricted by age, some adults are just as guilty. It is unfortunate that some waters choose to take such a draconian line.
  24. I ordered stuff from Floats Direct that never turned up. I got a refund eventually, but it's not the point. Shame, 'cos I've had floats from them before that are top quality.

    Why not Carp??

quote: Originally posted by Nathan: [QB] Many people say that fishing soon will just be Carp fishing. Who exactly says that? What's to stop someone fishing a carp lake for roach or perch? These carp fanatics make me laugh. There's a growing number of big carp in our rivers, but they never go for those do they? Oh no. Much too difficult. I stopped fishing for carp last year because there are too many ********s doing it. Chuck it out with a PVA bag and hope for the best most of them seem to be. I witnessed a bloke the other week on my local lake with a bait boat. Not unusual you think - but he could have walked around the lake to the spot where he was dumping his bait in and then used the thing to put his bait on 3 spots that were well within casting distance. Very skillfull I must say. No you can keep it as far as I'm concerned. Leave them to their puddles while I'm off enjoying the peace and quiet of the riverbank. I'm with Bulster and Peter Waller - at least while they're camped out in their camouflage gear in the wild jungles of the Home Counties at least they are leaving our beautiful rivers alone. Pike any day of the week. No competition.
