  1. Hi Chris ,glad you are fishing the Thatcham stretch behind the "white house" ,it is my favourite haunt for the last couple of years. I knew with your methods you would catch nice chub ,there are huge shoals of roach/bream and perch also and am sure you will catch large perch there. Seen big pike also and caught brownies way bigger than 4.5lb one you caught. Maybe there is enough foot bike traffic to keep the otters away I look forward to your reports on Padworth ,also accessible on the Thatcham tickets. Though this abounds with otters and cormorants.
  2. Downstream from where you caught your barbel is :civil service water ,then Thatcham ,then NAA bulls lock section. All have huge quantities of minnows ,so much so that the NAA matches were cancelled there as they became ""minnow matches". These minnows mean there are some very large fish there ,pike/perch/chub/barbel/grayling/bream ,etc.................plus very scenic and some wonderful swims. With a NAA permit you could exchange in Tonys and fish the civil service stretch ,warning it is hard................good luck wherever you choose to fish
  3. What a fish well done ,venue has barbel history but so reassuring to hear of a fish of that quality. Be hard to go back to willows fishpond and catch a mutant goldfish for the ninth time after that !
  4. Fished Bellwood when I was in NAA ,caught a few bream ,fishing light where people had been spoding previously and a few carp on pellets by the aerators ,was a few fun fish washed in from the Kennet A rule was applied apparently ,so much weight of fish per acre or hectare is recommend ,just say 30lb per acre ,so 1x30lb ,or 30x1lb so they stocked with big fish like "Boris" 30+lb and a few big mates ,so more a water to camp at lol ,not for me. tis not like willows
  5. Great read thank you.........fished this venue ,first day of the season ,very poor ,though very scenic I find these secluded/isolated venues the worst effected on the Kennet from predators. Venues like behind the old "white house" pub are busy ,bright ,noisy......and full of fish
  6. Fished a deep clear lake last week ,my first outing this year ,no bites But a carp was caught on the adjacent shallower lake..........so carp fishing or F1 fishing or nothing ,some canals still open ,great tench btw
  7. Loved your humour with the humble F1 and share your problem with the "dilemma". Unfortunately the sparkling carpark ,manicured swims ,dug out puddle ,tame fish ,artificial baits (boilies) are just a bit much for me. Perhaps fishing seems to have moved on and I haven't lol. Great read btw
  8. Tremendous rainbow ,very strong generally ,whether or not they should be there is debatable ,the Kennet though never prolific for me ,still has the surprise fish element ,caught a weird fish , trout like but silver ,I had a picture and a flyfisher told me it was a triploid. Worst feeling in fishing for me losing one ,without knowing what it was.........because of this I fish thicker lines than most.
  9. The gene thing sounds scary as the gene will be in the food chain ,kill as many as I can but only the larger ones get caught by anglers and trappers as you suggest ,had hoped the otters would adapt to eat the crays but have not seen any evidence.
  10. Sometimes I think we are fishing different River Kennets with your great chub catches but the crayfish story reassures me "same river"................ I have found, smellier the bait =more crays alternatively ,boil and prepare ,marinate in lemon juice and salad cream in the fridge overnight ,allow to warm to room temp ,add tomato and cucumber ,season to choice.
  11. 2lb 15oz wat a fish ! ,gave up trying to predict the grayling and don't target them and they turn up randomly in some bizarre places and swims ,saw one amongst 20 brownies at Dunmill bridge ,caught several CSAS stretch Hambridge and a beauty right by Bulls lock ,Colthrop has plenty ,rightly or wrongly I had assumed the majority were native fish who lived in the Kennet/Lambourne seeking shallows to spawn in or around july ,like brownies although different family .
  12. My biggest grayling came from Brimpton NAA ,2lb 2oz from a undercut bank a,couple of years ago and I would be confident that was not a stocked fish but east of the Aldershot gets some really dirty water caused by the barges ,which apparently is not good for the splendid grayling ,so i do not expect them to thrive. Plus I haven't caught any small ones. Happy to be wrong though.
  13. So pleased you fished Aldermaston ,always wondered why not more often ,as always thought where your photo was taken would fish well trotting for chub and thought I always underachieved ,never caught a grayling that far east but did catch gudgeon ,trout ,perch ,roach , bream (large) and very small chub but like a lot of the Kennet ,looks better than it fishes (for me).
  14. Yeh was a bit crass , barbel chub dace minnow grayling roach perch gudgeon bream bleak......conger mackerel dogfish ,undulate/thornback/small eyed , all rays. Venues Kennet Canal Solent....sorry .Did see a water vole for the first time ,the cutest
  15. 69lb... mazin well done, readily concede that I catch lower weights and do not target specific species very often but I fished three venues in four days this week and caught 16 different species but it was splendid fun.
  16. Caught 4 (2 different venues) all about 14 oz and only one 2lb+ but not three lb , stocking is great but was very much hoping that are successfully breeding naturally ,perhaps not. The smallest fish are funny ,swim towards you until they see the net and I must admit was not sure what they were until they were landed , cross between an alligator gar and a jack pike with pink fins ,still a welcome addition, been sadly missed by .
  17. Watched "onthebank" and saw barbel in bland lakes for match fisherman and knew it was wrong ,in the Kennet and other rivers is right. Seems to be a few about this year ,really small ones as well ,I wondered if anyone had released fish but I have caught them in two separate venues and obviously yours is not a stocked fish ,let us hope these new generations are more otter wary.
  18. Any suggestions for the culprit who has taken the gruesome lump out the crucian ,surely not pike in willows ?
  19. Jeez BL your taking some great pictures of some really ugly fish ,I currently occupy the other end of the spectrum ,really ugly pictures of some great fish. Keep um coming chap
  20. Basically from Northcroft thru to the bypass road bridge over the Kennet it is free water if it is NOT on the NAA ticket ,bream/chub and many , many silver fish etc abound ,away from the otters and fed hourly with copious amounts of bread ,fish paradise ,just not for me. Aldermaston is scenic ,peaceful and I find it hard but certainly opportunities, to wade and try out a centrepin ,trotting or ledgering at this time of the year before the flows gets strong. Neither venue can match your success weight wise at Willows but when you recognise a fish from last week and they have names ,it is a scary thought ,also it is a skill set and discipline I do not have ,I try the lakes in the "close season" and am the worst .
  21. The Kennet can be hard ,so these splendid bream are more than welcome ,they seem to seek the flowing weed the barbel like ,my biggest was 9.5 pound from Aldermaston on the NAA ticket and the colour difference to lake bream fish I have caught (say Bellwood) bronze/ silver is pronounced. Another strong fish around Thatcham are the roach/bream hybrids which really puzzled me ,the first time I caught one but only seen them to 2-3 lb ish. Certainly no secrets involved ,they seem to be in the deeper sections and can be caught on all baits ,float or ledger ,most venues east of Newbury ,except Brimpton ,have heard there are many in Vicky park Newbury and Speen moor but I haven't fished there. Perhaps the bad press is mainly from carpers lol
  22. Chris always wondered why you didn't seem to catch the muscled up ,non slimy ,bronze Kennet bream as they seem to follow me from Bulls lock to Padworth and some big ones too ,not to be confused with the slimy ,lethargic ,silver lake bream........as if they are different breeds ? Great picture btw .
  23. The Kennet flows seem to split at Newbury ,low flows west ,higher flows east ,which makes sense ,my day was bad , slippy angled banks were full of slugs/snails and nettles and my box fell in the river ,my banker swim ,which I had convinced myself would fish well when overcast produced my only fish a gudgeon. Have put a ruler in my box ,as I have nothing to weigh grammes with and hope to catch a 6" gudgeon and try to join the Soc'. Glad to see everyone else is doing much better
  24. Thank you Gentleman ,BW for the info about the society ,most splendid ,eccentric and as you say most TIC and Chris for the lovely article about our charismatic friend. Strange to see the society is about the Grand Union as although the Gudgeon is everywhere I always associate them with "gravel bottoms" . Will be trotting on the Kennet tomorrow ,low expectations ,catch wise ,high expectation on enjoyment. I do not fish lakes much ,or use the method ,preferring running or paternoster cage feeder etc but if I fished method ,with braid and a rigid tip , I would expect big fish ,would bump off or straighten hooks ,or to snap hook lengths........two ways to try ,fish mono main line for stretch ,or try using a bait runner function ...........please not at all based on my catching of carp ,light years behind you gents but on beach casting for bass ,build in some give or something must break.
  25. Lovely pictures of the Rudd and Gudgeon ,such pretty fish ,there are some oversized gudgeon on the Reeds ticket at Thatcham. The vast amount of perch in the lakes are busy at this time of year swallowing up the fry ,not a fan.
