  1. Obviously you have not seen the needle sharp gnashers sported by a 25lb conger ghost
  2. I have caught mackerel on a rising tide just coming off the low in quite shallow water in the evening. The best technique in these circumstances is probably float fished small Ammo sandeel on a fine wire number 4 hook with a stick float and light as you dare. They were feeding on white bait and driving the small fish to the surface and jumping just like trout. You get the odd big garfish as well...
  3. If we persuade everyone that fish are toxic, full of bacteria, parasites etc. Then the HSE won't let you take the kids fishing so sport fishing will be doomed anyway. Just a thought ghost By the way it is a cat that is skinned in the adage, not in real life I hasten to add, cats are much nicer with the skin on [ 21. 4. It should be; It's mullet. Ultra picky pedantic squirrel, bad day at work A good place to start is http://www.chippyjersey.co.uk/ Mulleting in Jersey but most of the techniques are the same.
  5. Sadly Jersey has the perfect recipe for accidents like this. The island is small; nine by five miles so you are never far from the sea. Islanders have a fair amount of disposable income, in the case of some merchant bankers, lawyers etc insane amounts, so boats, yaks, jet skis etc are bought as summer play things by people who do not have the time or inclination to learn much about them or the sea. Sea charts, GPS, VHF, life jackets are not usually purchased at the same time. We have lovely hot summers in a good year so the sea is really tempting. There are a lot of people in the island who are here on short term contracts, they may not know about or appreciate the tidal range or currents around the island. People do get cut off on rocks or get into trouble on the causeways connecting Elizabeth castle, St Aubins Fort and Corbiere lighthouse to the island, sadly some of them drown. There were two young men down on Greve de Lecq beach a few weeks ago taking it in turns to paddle around in a yak while the other threw pebbles at him. [ 21. 6. We were catching quite a few mackerel from the shore in Jersey a few weeks ago but they seem to have disappeared offshore, gone further North at the moment. It was 31 C this weekend
  7. I wonder where they were off the North Coast? That whole area is pretty treacherous when you get out of the bays. There are very fast currents between Greve de Lecq and the Paternosters and parts of the Plemont Trench go down to 50 metres. There are warnings on the sea charts for that area to beware of large waves coming in from fast ferries as well. This was not a yakker http://www.thisisjersey.co.uk/news/news6.html but you would have to be a strong paddler to go against some of those currents. I suppose it will only be a matter of time before the Evening Post will have a 'Canoist missing, feared drowned' headline
  8. I've caught; mackerel, snipe, horse mackerel, pollack and bass either on spinners or on float fished sandeels at night in a harbour
  9. They must catch enough to make it worthwhile. They fish purely for the pot and if the fish are not coming ashore then they will move on or try something else. I caught a schoolie a week or so ago while feathering for mackerel. It was over the minimum size but not really worth eating so it went back.
  10. The local Portugese feather for bass after dark using a beach rod, big fixed spool and strings of white feathers and 3/0+ hooks. [ 10. June 2005, 11:56 AM: Message edited by: Socksy Squirrel ]
  11. My sympathies, it looks like you are going to have a bit of a scar there.
  12. Quite popular down here in Jersey CI. I prefer them to mackerel
  13. We used to have lots of white dog poo along the strandline. Until they required dog owners to clean up after their pets and partly banned them from the beaches in the summer.
  14. Best to save them for the gin and bitter lemon. Shot of gin, juice of one lemon and ice. Shake and pour into a highball glass. Top up with real Schweppes Tonic, not the Slimline stuff, no point in worrying about calories with this one! Close eyes, raise to lips and drink
  15. Lion dung, now that is the stuff! ghost ghost
  16. Persistent fishy pongs can be removed with dilute thin bleach on its own or hydrogen peroxide solution acidified with vinegar. These are ideal for cleaning cutting boards, cool bags etc. They work by converting amines which smell into amine oxides which are less smelly and more water soluble. They also kill off the bacteria which contribute to the smell.
  17. He is working very hard. If the weather took a turn for the better the prospect of a mullet might lure him out
  18. It depends on the type of fishing that you are in to. There are mullet in the harbour and it is worth float fishing for garfish, mackerel, pollack and bass at that time of year from the harbours and rocks. Mark and I go for full size beach rods and SLOSH's when we fish the bottom. Take a look at www.jersey.com for a guide to the fishing in Jersey. We might be able to sort out a mini AN fish in
  19. The new topics and post numbers for the Sea forum are ahead of the Coarse forum as well and the lead is growing. We have a lot of very active posters
  20. Hi there, Comments by me in this thread about freshwater licenses apply to Jersey. We are not under the control of the EA nor the UK government as far as freshwater fishing is concerned. Most of the coarse fishing in the island takes place in reservoirs controlled by Jersey Water, apart from that there are a few ponds. Members of the coarse fishing club obtain exclusive access to these waters. Trout fishing takes place in three reservoirs controlled by Jersey Water, membership of this club allows fishing in these waters and the taking of trout. The reservoirs are restocked with fresh trout on a regular basis. There is as far as I know no game fishing licence in the island and sea trout and salmon caught in coastal waters may be retained or released as you wish.
  21. I think that you will find that they remove the ratchet to fit the mags. I really would like mags and a ratchet
  22. Personally I would prefer a mag version of the SL20SHV and SL30SHV.
  23. Take a look at this, States make £19m loss in 2004 http://www.thisisjersey.co.uk/news/news7.html It smells like another tax and we are not going to get anything for it
  24. Hi there, I thought I would pull this back to the top as the meeting is tomorrow. See you there
