It is not mine by the way. I just spotted it in the local small ads and posted it up here as a service. If a local yakker wants to give it a good home then well and good. I don't do 'floating logs'

LSD's are the main species caught from the shore in Jersey. If it were not for the dogs most sessions bottom fishing would be blanks.

Mike Thrussell has an article in this week's Anglers Mail about the bass fishing off Guernsey early in the year. There is also an interesting piece on the promotion of alternative species as food that have not seen much commercial exploitation so far. Many of these eg conger, ling and pollack can still be caught in good sizes by the angler. If they become fashionable down the local Tesburys then this situation may not last.

I do not know what this licence is going to entail. However I would like to see something on the table that is beneficial to sea angling before the licence goes ahead. At the moment the freshwater anglers pay a licence, in return they get stocking in the case of the trout anglers and exclusive access in the case of the coarse anglers. Are we going to be left paying say £20 per annum with no benefits at all apart from maybe a few quid given to Jersey Tourism to subsidise the Jersey Open Festival.

I have the feeling it is a money raising scheme. It will raise a few thousand for Agriculture and Fisheries, justify the number of staff down there despite farmings terminal decline and allow for a certain amount of green conservation type posing. I suppose that if you are standing on a pier in the early hours of the morning then the Honorary Police might ask to see your license. The people who are down Sorel, La Moye etc on a Sunday night will not be bothered by them or the men and women from Ag and Fish. Sadly these people are just the ones who will not care about bag limits or minimum sizes.

In the opinion of the locals down here they are better to eat than edible crabs. They just look a bit scary ghost

Hi there, I have had a quick look through and it looks fine. I will send it to your mum tonight. Regards, Socksy

Hi Guernseybass, I have PM'd you my address. I will do my best to ask your question. Regards, Socksy

It might need a bit of editing. A wether is a castrated ram BTW Ask your mum, she seems to be a bit of an expert on sheep!

Hi YFN and Tuggs, Why not let YFN knock out an account? It will be a fresh and individual view. She can spell and grammar check it. I will do a bit of light editing to knock it into shape. An author needs a good editor You can put the finished article on your own site and with Elton's permission it could be added to the Angler's Net collection. Best wishes, Socksy [ 23. Hi there, There will be a meeting at The Members' Room, Societe Jersaise, 7 Pier Road, St Helier at 8pm, Wednesday 4th May 2005. This meeting will discuss proposals for sea rod licences, no take zones and bag limits. If you live and fish in Jersey then you should come along. If there is anything of interest then I will post it on here.

I'll volunteer to proof read it. [ 22. April 2005, 05:16 PM: Message edited by: Socksy Squirrel ]

There is some Wels cat fishing on the Ebro; proper hooks eg 6/0's, 100lb braid, boat rods, live carp for bait None of this trying to catch goldfish with number 24's and a small maggot ghost [ 22. April 2005, 04:39 PM: Message edited by: Socksy Squirrel ]

Sounds a bit like selling a house...

A good starter reel for the tournament caster is the 6500 CT Mag Elite or CT Elite for the heavier leads. They like to replace the power handle with a paddle handle as it makes the whole thing easier. Most of the local casters started with those before moving on to more specialised ABU's. The 5500 CT is used for the lighter leads and there are a few other obsolete reels that find favour. ABU's are light, have inspool bearings and due to the low profile you can get a really good grip on the spool. [ 22. April 2005, 02:38 PM: Message edited by: Socksy Squirrel ]

Hi there, The SL20 and SL30 are the same diameter, just the spools are different widths. The SL40 is quite a bit larger, roughly the same size as the 300H, they are both quite a bit smaller than the 450H. The SL's do sit higher on the rod than the comparative ABU's or the 7HT. That said they are castable for someone with average sized hands. Tournament casters would probably not think much of the big handle and the higher profile compared with an ABU 6500.

Various Daiwa Sealine eg SL20SH, SL30SH. They have a fast retrieve, will usually survive pretty much anything and can be used as a winch to lift small fish up the pier walls

Hugh's books do stress conservation and taking fish from sustainable local stocks. Contrast that with the average TV chef who would serve up fillet of mahseer flown halfway round the world and stress the cachet of rarity value, high price and the fact that as that particular stock was hovering on the brink of extinction you and your chums would probably be the last ones to eat a slice!

Hugh has been criticised for his actions and quite rightly so. However many of his ideas are good; supporting small local producers, seasonal products etc. Sometimes the local supermarket has loads of vegetables that have been produced halfway around the world and shipped in when the same thing could be produced in this country.
