  22. i have just had a reply from the ea about the burbot It is true that the burbot was once a native species and is the only fish known to have become extinct in Great Britain in recent centuries. There has been no authenticated record of burbot in the UK for over 50 years. Note, however, that this fish species always did have a limited distribution because it was right on the on the edge of its natural range. It was restricted to rivers in eastern England from County Durham to the Great Ouse. Despite debate over the last two decades, there is no consensus on the reasons for the extinction of the burbot in England. Certainly, all the rivers from which the species was previously recorded still contain fish. In Europe it is known from 19 countries. The burbot is one of the species listed under the Government's UK Biodiversity Action Plan. One of the objectives of this action plan is to seek a consensus view on the most likely causes for its loss, using evidence from England and continental Europe, and if reintroduction is considered appropriate and biologically feasible, draw up and agree upon a reintroduction plan by 2010. Part of this process is for the Environment Agency to consider the conservation justification of re-establishing the burbot as a viable component of UK biodiversity, taking account of the historic range, reasons for extirpation, the ecological impact of reintroduction, and changes to the countryside since burbot existed in the UK. Decisions will have to be made as to whether re-establishment of naturally self-sustaining populations of the burbot to parts of the former range is desirable and feasible. Rivers within the historic range in England would need to be examined to ascertain if the ecological requirements of the species can still be met in any of them. Note that because the burbot is no longer a native species, any attempts at reinstroduction would need to meet the special consent requirements of the Wildlife & Countryside Act and the Import of Live Fish Act in addition to the normal consent needed for stocking resident fish. Yours sincerely Phil Hickley National Fisheries Technical Manager
