  1. Of all the fish ive caguht it has to be carp for speed and aggression and tench for strength. Bream can really fight when they want to just most of the time they seem to flop into the landing net. A couple of years ago i was catching bream in about 1 foot of water and they were jumping and tail walking and having a real go.
  2. In Japan, or at least I think its Japan they have what look like brown murky swimming pools full of fish, perhaps this is what he means by a man made place? If so that would open up the possibility of lakes and then there would be a lot more places to choose from at this time of year.
  3. Coincedence this thread being here the day i first fished in the way you described It was also the first time ive ever used boileys, hair rigs, bolt rigs and hooks bigger than size 10 for anything other than pike and sea fish. I had a lively days float fishing and the "sleeper" rod worked as intended (one fish lost, 1 landed) but i also learnt a couple of lessons. One being i need stronger hook lengths on the carp rod, probably more like 10lbs and the other being its best not to fish to close to any snags or margins on the sleeper rod. Next time im going to fish with it in open water so i have more time to get to it before the fish gets to a snag. Obviosly if your catching frequently on both rods bring one in or you will end up in a predicament like others have said.
  4. If commercials didnt exist then would rivers and wilder waters become more crowded and so less wild? Perhaps then those waters would start getting a bit like commecials. Whilst i do think carp getting out of lakes and into canals and rivers is deffinately a bad thing which people should be more careful of I think carp are a fantastic fish and love catching them. I caught my PB crucian today (on a water primarily fished by carp anglers) and id be gutted if the lake suddenly got rammed with "pasties". Variety is a hugely important part of fishing, if not the most important part and carp are part of it, a balance has to be maintained. Everyone and I mean everyone I walk past on jubilee lake (as mentioned earlier) is just sat behind 2 buzzers fishing for carp, Ive just returned to coarse fishing after about 5 years out and it was never like that before on newburys lakes. I dont understand it really its not like all other species of fish suddenly got boring to catch a lot of the carp fisherman i speak to seem to have a real dislike of other coarse species, to me thats just wierd. Really disgusting video posted earlier, no animal should be treated like that.
  5. The rudd are worth targetting, i caught 5 1lb rudd yesterday along with 4 tench and loads of decent sized perch. Going to try long lake next.
  6. I think it was probably a one off, it was about 9 - 10 ounces caught on maggots in the margins when targeting tench. Ive only fished there with maggots once though so who knows it could well be worth a try. One end of Horderns goes really thin (ive heard it refered to as 'the cave') and ive seen it swarming with roach, also its the only place ive seen people targeting anything other than carp (2 people pole fishing seemed to be catching). Ever tried Long Lake?
  7. The one thing i dislike about carp fishing is that all the "40lb specimens" you see them with in magazines are usually just 20lb fish with 20lbs worth of fat hanging off of them. I dont see the point in hating any aspect of angling though and love catching carp.
  8. Can anybody here suggest a good general rig for short - medium range fishing on gravel pits 4ft - 7ft deep? Normally im into general coarse fishing but i fancy a bit of carp fishing and the amount of different rigs around makes things pretty confusing. Also what hook size do most people here use?
  9. Ive now had carp, tench, rudd and perch all to good sizes from Jubilee. Had a look around Long Lake yesterday and the margins were carpeted with freshwater mussel shells. Think fishing with cockels could be worth a try.
  10. It went really badly! I got there at about 2 in the afternoon on thursday, it was totally dead until about 6 and then i missed a few bites and lost a fish. Twice in a row ive blanked now giving Jubilee a go tomorow. Long lake is supposedly the hardest but contains the best fish.
  11. I was in the scouts as a boy and we wnet away to scotland for a week to an international camp. The place was absolutely rife was mosquitos and we were staying next to some irish scouts. The strange thing was the irish scouts got the hell bitten out of them and we got barely touched, appart from 2 of us with irish blood. Coincedence or something very wierd?
  12. For mainline id go for 5lbs-7lbs, you could go lighter/heavier depending on where your fishing. Lift bite rigs work well for tench, thier discribed in another thread. if not put the bulk of your shot around your float with one or two smaller ones to take the bait down to the bottom quickly as tench are a bottom feeding fish. Ive had more tench on red maggots than any other bait but bread and sweetcorn have always done well to and id guess more people would say sweetcorn. Im a little rusty as i havnt propperly fished in a few years so forgive me if any of that is wrong, im sure there are much more experienced people here that can tell you better
  13. Joined TAA today and had a look around the lakes, quite a few carp on the surface in horderns and also a small pike. Saw a fair few dead fish including a big perch, I quite fancy horderns as it looks a lot more suitable for float fishing. Im going there today so ill post here how i get on Im a little confused over one of the rules, it looks to me as though i can fish with 2 rods on the normal permit I have but im not sure, anyone have any info on this?
  14. A small peice of rotten apple an a size 48 hook works for me.
  15. How much did it cost you to join? I went into Thatcham angling a few weeks ago and was told i would have to pay a late joining fee of £30 on top of the cost for a permit bringing it up to about £70 and then pay again on June 16th. Is this what you had to do? Has anyone fished Hordens Mere before? Its a small lake next to Jubilee and i quite like the sound of it.
