  1. Welcome aboard Cook. Yes I've used Spam. However I find othe brands of tinned meat tougher and easier to keep on the hook (my fav. brand is Plumrose). Meat (the tinned variety) is a very (most??) popular bait for barbel in the UK....

    Enjoy your time on AN.....

  2. Sounds like it were the Test - so I'm guessing they were almost certainly fluff chucking....

My mate, Paul came across 3 anglers while sussing out some stretches on the Avon over Easter. Two b*ggered off smartish when they saw him coming, the other - who was fishing the feeder and had obviously caught by the contents of his keep net claimed he was told by the local tackle shop the close saeson wasn't till May (yeah, right!)

  4. Most Anglers spend their lives in making rules for tench, and tench spend theirs in breaking them...(After G Aston) OK so the original quote talked of trout. But I think it remains true of most fish...

My two favourite tench pits couldn't be more different. The first is very much a night water. For years I've caught more tench during the hours of darkness than any other place I fish for them yet during the day - even prime times of dawn and dusk is NEARLY always a struggle. (Though of course they'll always prove you wrong on occasions)

The second pit - fishes much better during the heat of the day. All my 6lb+ fish (OK so it's not a huge sample!!) have come around mid-day on HOT summer days - conditions not famous for being ideal for tench.

Both pits are of similar size and depth the 2nd has much more weed growth however. The 2nd also get a lot more angling pressure.

The only similarity is in location - targetting the margins is a winner on both venues.....

  6. The close season is the time for planning and I've just been for a long walk along the Pang. Anyone know if there are any stretches that allow bait fishing??

    TIA

  8. OP-JB:

    Chris,

Some people even think Issac quoted so much from this book because it actually belonged to him, a possibility that always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

    OP -JB

WOW that is a thought - looks like I'll have to invest in a copy if I want to read it!! Spent 3 hours of intensive searching last night to no avail! - found an interesting little tome "The Art of Angling" (note, without the e) from the early 17th Century by Barker which was a fascinating read.... but not what I was looking for.

  10. Thinking behind this is to prevent the spread of disease to the indiginous population. You can get a licence to catch signals with a trap (it's free!!) and all Siganls caught must be killed - you just can't re-use them as a bait....

  12. Well ALL my major purchases in the past 3years (rod/reel/brolly - even line) have been as the result of recommendations from fellow anglers - some even from this site!! Personally I wouldn't be swayed by a celeb - after all their usually being paid to say that aren't they??
