WOW - well done - what did it weigh?

HAHA! Early angler catches the chub - or something like that ....

Sounds horrendous!

Haha!

No. Didn't even lift the net out of the water - don't think it makes for great fish care having all those fish flapping on top of each other - especially perch with their sharp gill covers....
-
Just checked back through my diaries to confirm that was my first ever 3lb stripey from Hambridge - lovely colouration but quite an old and tatty looking fish - I photographed its good side - signs of a pike attack on its other flank!

Yeah a real red letter day. I do wonder where the Perch hide at other times - sulking under the branches a 'spose. Not the first time I've had a brace of decent stripeys here when it's flooded up - had a similar return 3 years ago.

Haha - finished it and sent it!

I 'penned' nearly 1500 words on Crucians last night - still work in progress - but should have a first draft to you before Christmas!!! Will do the same for Grayling next autumn!

Drat it - the view counter has 'broken again'!

Ah Ha! Never got a penny! My contribution was submitting a log book of catches for 8 years from 2001 - 2009 - see page 28 onwards on the above report. Of those 82343 grayling logged, 1297 were my catches (nearly 16% of the total!)! These would have been from the Itchen, Kennet & Lambourn - I didn't join Dorchester &DAS to fish the Frome until 2011. Happy to pen a few paras on on one of my fave species - though think it would sit much better with NEXT winter's newsletter, they are very much a winter species in my eyes! The Grayling Scoiety continued an online version of this logbook scheme - in truncated form - after this initial research period and I have logged all my Grayling catches with them ever since!

Well done - super looking Esox. Signals do appear to be less active when it's really cold - so you do get more of a chance deadbaiting....

Martin - my catch returns (nearly 1300 ladies over the survey period - via a log book scheme) contributed to this paper: https://www.wildtrout.org/assets/files/news/Grayling-Conservation-Guide_2018_v2.pdf

Yeah - done that for years - even participated in providing data to a research project around 15 years ago....

Thanks - twas a fun session....

Where's this River Lamborne you keep going on about?
-
Well I'm hunting for the bigger ones!
-
BTW how did you manage to keep the grayling so still as to take its photo - handling grayling is akin to trying to give a cat an enema!

I usually park in the layby opposite The Swan - walk up to the top and work my way downstream...
-
Lovely lady - I don't usually fish the Lambourn until the first frosts - might have to wait awhile if this mild autumn continues.....!

They're not exactly a challenge though - I'm sure I catch the same one quite often - stupid things are just suckers for maggots especially if they're white ones!
-
I put 3 gentles on a 14....

If there's a reasonable prospect of a chub or 2 - which means pretty much every swim at Hambridge - I always start with a 14 (super spade) tied to 0.18mm dia mono. Pretty agricultural - but I'd rather get less bites than lose a good fish - and I reason that in fast water they haven't got much time to make up their minds and if confidence has been increased by sipping in feebies..... If this doesn't work or bites drop off I'll switch down to a 16 to 0.16mm - which is as low as I'll go in fast water...
