Something resembling The Method is described in Mr Crabtree (1st published 1948) in the section on barbel. An whilst we're on early references the hair rig is described by ole Izaak himself (also in his chapter on barbel when he recommends attaching cheese to the hook with a length of silk) Nowt new is there??? I THINK I've read every word Bill Bryson has ever had printed (in books at least) and whilst he's most famous for his Travelogues he also has written two futher books (apart from Mother Tongue) on the English Language. Them being Dictionary for Writers and Editors and Troublesome Words. Troublesome Words in particular is worth getting hold of. The first sentence states "This book might more accurately, if less convincingly, have been called 'A Guide to Everything in English Usage That the Author wasn't Entirely Clear about until Quite Recently'. Well here's an excuse for some ANMC members to get together and a chance to fish England's most famous Chalk Stream After the success of last year's Grayling Fish-in I've organised another one! I've booked our EXCLUSIVE use of the Timsbury Manor fishery on the Middle Test. Timsbury is between Romsey and Stockbrdige. The fishery offers 1¼ miles of the Test proper plus a couple of carrier streams of ½ mile each in length. The Date? Saturday 25th Jan - yes it's a weekend so no excuses this time Elton. There's a good head of grayling upto 1½lb with fish twice this size a possibility. (My best from here is 1lb 9oz). There's also some EXCELLENT coarse fishing on offer particularly specimen Roach and Chub. Price 10 quid a head PAYABLE IN ADVANCE (I've already shelled out a 50 quid deposit). If I don't fill all the spaces I might have to ask for a top up of a couple of quid - It'll still be cheaper than the 20 notes a head we had to pay last year. Fishing is allowed from 9.00am till dusk. Though you can arrive in the Car Park before then. Not many rules - barbless hooks, all nets to be dipped (dip provided), no boilies! (Not such a crazy rule there are a number of commons in one of the carriers!). A whole range of tactics work - the carriers are best tackled with a roving 'trotting' approach. This can also work on the main river as can pegging out all day with a feeder. And if you want to try your hand at fluff chucking about 200 yards of the main river is still fly only. For bait - bring the usual culprits, 2-3 pints of maggots, perhaps some corn; and bread if you fancy a go at the 2lb+ roach. So - If your interested please e-mail me at chris_plumb@ntlworld.com. I didn't get any of my late Grand fathers personal possessions (he was a very keen angler) so Jaq suggested I get something in his memory that I would appreciate. Anyone on here own one? After months of shall, I shan't I - I caught the missus at a weak moment and got her OK. - So I've just committed a slice of my Grandad's inheritance and posted off the deposit on one. Won't be made till the New Year - just hope I can get my hands on it before the end of the season - I can't wait!! Chris

Well the Kennet's just fine - I had a grand day roving a venue above Newbury - half a dozen fine chub to 3½lb and nice 1¼lb perch, 4 nuisance brownies and 4 dozen dace & roach added up to a satisfying days sport! Chris
