  1. Out of curiosity, how do you attach leaders to your leadcore? And what length leader do you normally run? Ken

  3. That reminds me of a favorite quote by Alf Landon, Republican candidate for president in 1936 who was defeated by FDR. He said, "Wherever I've gone in this country, I've met Americans." Duh. No wonder he lost.

  8. Hmmm. I've considered doing that myself, Newt. I think some offices overbook patients just in case a few don't show up. Bastages.

  12. quote: The Ontaria ministry of Natural resources (MNR, yes I know that's in Canada) has a very similar system to the US. Pike fishing there is very popular and very well regulated, and a lot of fish are taken for the table. The fishing is very good and freely available. This is true. I've fished in Ontario several times, and Rice lake near Toronto has incredible numbers of bluegills, crappie, and walleye. Lakes north of Lake Superior in the Canadian shield region hold lots of walleye and pike, but the walleye tend to be small due to the short summer growing season. Personally, I won't go there anymore, because they've become too strict regarding what they will allow US anglers to take home, how it is packaged, etc. Plus, there is talk of new regulations requiring all anglers to posess a boater's safety certificate, which Canadian resort owners are bitterly against. About 90% of their clients are Americans, and it is doubtful that many of these fishermen would bother coming to Canada if this law were to pass.
  13. Fenboy, no offense taken here. I too enjoy catching and releasing trout when I fish rivers, so I understand where you're coming from. Lunatic asylum? That's why I keep coming back to this website, man, for for all the outrageous, absurd, and hilarious posts I keep seeing in the Non-Fishing Chat forum. Plus, I learn a bit about UK fishing. Tight lines. Ken

  16. Debate is healthy for the exchange of ideas in free societies, Fenboy, and I certainly respect your opinion. However, I strongly disagree with your POV, particularly in light of the fact that you have no clue regarding the situation here. To not remove predator Great Lakes salmon means less forage for all fish, an eventual mass die-off due to starvation, and a crash in fish populations. Our DNR knows that. It would be inhumane to release these fish. Plus, salmon fight themselves to exhaustion anyhow, and turn turtle if you release them. How irresponsible would that be? BTW, all my salmon are either grilled, broiled, or smoked, and they are delicious. Many are given away. I presume you're a vegetarian?

  18. quote: What's more, fishing in the US is run and protected by the State game organisations - they have strictly enforced bag and size limits. Absolutely right, Stu Mac. For example, I pay $28 annually to the Michigan DNR for an all-species fishing license; these monies go toward enforcement, maintenance of boat launches, fish hatcheries and collection of roe, etc. As sportsmen we are expected to not only adhere to existing regulations, but also report poaching, submit fin-clipped fishheads (which have an embedded chip with info on where the fish has been), and support our DNR as much as possible. I believe most states take the same approach, including the Old North State where Newt lives.
  19. Newt, which website did you get the radar image from? Ken
  20. Thanks Nick and Newt, we had a great time out there. And you're absolutely right about the fish population here, Newt, it's very robust. In fact, there is documented evidence that coho salmon will die off en masse if their forage (alewives, smelt, etc) disappears. That has happened in the past, and divers have reported the lake bottom littered with dead, starved cohos in the past. Every fall our rivers are filled with salmon, which spawn and die as part of their life cycle. Awful odor. Ken
