The Ontaria ministry of Natural resources (MNR, yes I know that's in Canada) has a very similar system to the US. Pike fishing there is very popular and very well regulated, and a lot of fish are taken for the table. The fishing is very good and freely available. This is true. I've fished in Ontario several times, and Rice lake near Toronto has incredible numbers of bluegills, crappie, and walleye. Lakes north of Lake Superior in the Canadian shield region hold lots of walleye and pike, but the walleye tend to be small due to the short summer growing season.
Personally, I won't go there anymore, because they've become too strict regarding what they will allow US anglers to take home, how it is packaged, etc. Plus, there is talk of new regulations requiring all anglers to posess a boater's safety certificate, which Canadian resort owners are bitterly against. About 90% of their clients are Americans, and it is doubtful that many of these fishermen would bother coming to Canada if this law were to pass.
