  2. Scary stuff, Relli donno if im brave nough for that YAK buisness, It fine on the move, few years back did a training thing on loch lomond, When we were standing still in the middle of the loch, i got edgy, mind plays too many tricks, Such a wee boat and all those many hundreds off feet of water underneath..
  3. We will have a good laugh regardless. Still praying the weather holds up.... A few double figure cod/ling sound about right Fingers crossed
  4. Cant wait iether phill, Will be great meeting everyone also..... See you saterday
  5. Hi Folks, A few years ago at torrnes power station(se scotland) hot water outflow power station i had my 1st encounter with mullet, It was quite dark3 in morning) caught most as the sky light up at dawn.. Was fishing for bass actualy with size 1ns and big ragworm baits, As where the 3 people fishing iether side of same same tactics. Caught loads of bass that night, but then everyone started catching these mullet on the rag baits and fairly big hooks, I had about6 and most others had between 5-10 mullet also, all thick lipped, I couldnt believe it at the time, Eating ragworm surely is some form of predation... At the time i thought all you could get em on was bread.
  6. There superb pics yankeecodman, Fish like that definatley would make USA a worthy fishing holiday one day, Thanks for all the attatchments, I shoulda guessed NYC though Ohh and welcome to AN P.S sorry for "hijacking" the thread winter... I was just finding all these US fish quite interesting
  7. Ohhh can you get these fish from shore also?? here the cod make a big run really close to shore in winter so they can feed heavily before going off to spawn, peaking january sometimes just before spawning
  8. Hi yankeecodman, Those are fantastic fish! I think our goverment(fish stocks wise) should take example of the way use are doing things, Definetly got those commercials under control, And obviosly the fish you catch the proof, Sorry im not great with US places, Where about do you fish ie which coast is it the north east of the states??? After seeing them piccs looks as tho species wise you are the same as us, tho just jumbo sized, Amazing!
  9. Those are some codlets, In that case, Ide love to see the size of your skate!!! Or even not thanks to dragging in your version of dogfish in from 200feet 3 at a time!, Seriosly though, Is it the same haddock that we get? Im interested in finding out what fish you have thats the same s ours, Its as though its mostly the same only many times bigger
  10. Could be a possibility The fair way to do it if it was a gaffless person is just to unhook in the water(if thats possible with such a large fish) Would save such injurys, and what just for a picture!!!
  11. Hi AJX, Welcome, Ide suggest as a begginer to stay clear of using multipliers as a stat for reels, They are abit more complicated and require aliittle bit skill to control, If not used properly they can overwind realy easily and will cause big problems, tangles on the beach, IDe suggest to start off with a big pit fixed spool, will give maximum casting in fixed spools, Preferably with 2 spools, one spool using light 15lb line and shockleader, for clean ground, beaches over sand and on the other spool 30 04 40 lb stright through if it is snaggy ground, The fixed spool reel i use is the diawa emblem, superb reel, Im sure it will be around 50 quid plus 20 topps for a spare spool, On to rods you will find its realy down to preferance, not many 2 people will lkike the same rods, Something in the 12-14 ft range, Make sure its not to heavy or a realy floppy rod, Ide say maybe best with something tharts quite stiff, with a soft tip,Casting between 4-6ounce About 100 quid probably a good price for an average rod to start with, But if your willing to go second hand there are plenty of great rods cheaper than this, The penn range of beachcasters are great to start off with, Hopefully some1 can help by naming models off rods that may suit,
  12. Seems to be differential betwen areas, For instance some of the areas in east fife(east scotland) are completaly overwhelmed by huge makerell shoals in good weather, with a few in south east scotland too, South west scotland it seems to be that theres lots of makarell on days, I was really sick of them last time whilst down the south west fishing for haddock not even attractors and still bringin in 2 or 3 at a time everytime, But then again, same port diffrent days there isnt as many, Im sure some unaproachable guy been getting quite a few somewhere in the wilderness of west scotland, Maybe he could tell us if its been a good year up there compared to others makky wise????? Shaun:)
  13. Kieran-Is there not a law against abusing the emergency services in the UK? hmm, How can you punish kids who if they never got help from the RNLI wouldhave died(i bet a couple on the rib innocent aswell) I think that the answer is education, They shouldnt have been out in the 1st place if they clueless, I dont see how the sea should be any diffrent from our roads, Some sortof test to show you are responsable enough and can be safe with your own life and others, Id say the sea is more dangerous than the roads...
  14. Congradulations norrie, Those are crackers!!! I take it this is you just warming up for amble then
  15. Thats an absolute disgrace!!!! I feel ashamed knowing that an angler did this, Same with boat safety, bieng at sea etc i think people who want to fish for skate should be educated properly , and make sure there responsable enough 1st, On the other hands ,maybe they are educated but are just sick b@$t***S I think the angling press should show this, So people know that there still bad anglers out there that need weeded out!!
  16. Im told its 2 do with them camoflaging themselfs when intending to feed in the keplp for long periods of time otherwise if still yellowish gold theyd stick out like a sore thumb, abit like them lizards that doo that...
  17. not just any red cod thats a cracker, An is that a tag i see in it too didnt know they do that with cod???
  18. Hiya Bob, Sry i dont know much about those rods or reels, Abit off topic unfortunately, Just outof interest, Hows the fishing doing up your way??? What species are showing boat and shore? It was preety dead last year from shore(s**t hot off the boat) i know hopefully things improving abit, Im missing the orkneys from last years holiday!!!! Cheers Shaun
  19. Codd arent just a winter fish, Up here north east scotland there is also a summer cod season(fishing in kelp) for cod wehich are usualy red, U sure them ure m8s caught werent summer resident coddling winter??? Fur me the winter cod fishing kicks off in style in october, Till then its summer codling,
  20. I know a little vairiation thats actualy my frav shore rig this year, But not with 3 hooks just 2, Instead of cascade swivel in the middle of the bottom snood ive used breakawy relay clips with a stopknot above, the bottom snood gets crimped up right down ontop of the impact shield, then the top snood way up the trace body, Finished result is you have a bottom snood/hook bait trailing way on the bottom below sinker and the top snood also trailing on the bottom, Ideal for all fish really and comes into its own in a strong tide. You clip the bottom hook onto the impact shield, then the top hook which should reach nearly down to the bottom snoods swivel but not quite then lips on to that relay clip, and the tension will find itself as the stopknot moves, as seen in the diagram above when clpped up you have a bow of slack line, dont lett his bother you, Works a treat, any leghnths i usualy use size ones and 2s longer snoods the better,
  21. woops, sorry gillies i didnt notice that, Especialy when im as tired as i am now, cant get to sleep, i should really stay of coffe, I donno why i dreamed up that gillies said scotland, i was actualy meaning which venue in scotland, But since its in ierland that dont matter hehehe I think i must be slightly dense Anyways hope everyone going gets a few fish, goodnight
  22. Just outof curiosity.... Where is it bieng held this year??? It was there in orkney last year whilst i was up on holiday.
  23. H iAlan, Sounds like a great trip and some great fun, great write up and piccies too,
  24. 525 magg is the mutts nutts so far for me, I know alot compolain the y dont las tfor long, But all you need to do is set the mags on as low as they gow and aslong as you give reasonable controll it never blows up, Ive found with it using 18lb line ive added 50 yards to my cast, i used the sports mag also with finding it just a tiny wee bit less smoot, As concerns the fixed spool, emblem is the buisness for casting poulling power the lot, and 50 quid dont think that can be beat, i love mine,
  25. The dunbar RIB lifeboat surprised me coming full pelt into the harbour one day coming back from a training exersize, Line wrappoed round its prop (40 lb ) and the guy on the front went flying forward rather fast, before the line snapped but they were rather p,ed off unwinding all that line off there prop, Ive caught swans and ducks on fly rod, as theve swam right over my line, Worst ever was catching my own head, Flyfishin miles from my house i hooked my head and it just woodnt come off, Had this great white fluffy fly on my head traveling back on the train then bus, needl;ess to sday i got a few looks, And also the bloomin nurses larfed there nut off when i went to get it takin off Shaun
