  1. ricey its not my chub mate its steves! go on anderoo,2lb redfin....
  2. either perch...or carp! i watched a very very big mirror(25-30+) fry feeding on a river the weekend,it was chraging through a lily pad, into shallows around a foot or two deep, back out of teh water, swirling at the tiny fry,i did notice a few chub around 2-3inches that were in teh same area but i didnt see the carp actaully take them but he was definetly having a munch on the "pin" fry. very intresting to watch, never seen carp behave that predatory before.
  3. nice tinca, took me years to get one over 3lb,my bogey species?
  4. stalk em,stalk em,stalk em! go on put a float on and go stalking!
  5. nearly! i stalked 3 carp on the river yesterday yesterday, one ghostie around 15+, and two large commons, using float and corn i missed a take from the ghostie,10-20 minutes later i set a hook into the bigger of teh two commons i got a good look before we departed a good 20 no doubt....arrggh!!! bugger!! hooklink went.....
  6. good luck to all out and about on the glorious 16th and the thrill of flowing water!
  7. thats alright mate you could PM me only reason i ask is i recently read a cracking article on chub on deadbaits from stillwaters, was in CAT mag,its mentioned in there, some chevins to over 7+
  8. woah! hold it there i aint picking holes in anything,i'm telling you facts mate. its up to you wether or not you want to pursue pike with baits in summer, most predator anglers my self inculded dont fish with baits for em in summer we use lures for the reasons i have outlined, funny enough i use 40lb braid for my bait fishing, still land em quicker on a jerkbait rod and 80lb braid tho was you fishing dam flask?
  9. well yes, personally i dont fish with deads in summer or high temps if i do its when after zander wich normally takes place after dark, wich lessens teh chance of hooking up with pike. see pike will and can readily engulf a deadbait in summer, when the water temps are high they are active and hungry and will take deads very very quickly, often taking the bait right back to the back of the throat or worse the stomach, also playing lively pike in high temps for too long, can kill them, they take ages to recover, if they recover. its not fair on them really, lures often hook up in the front of the mouth(some soft plastics get engulfed tho) plus most(well i do) use very strong tackle for lure fishing,so the fish are played landed and released as quick as possible(often no photos or wieghing either) ian,i dont mean to come across all high and mighty i'm just telling you what i know,i love pike as im sure you do.....give em a rest till autumn mate.
  10. deadbaiting for pike,in this weather! not suprised at the chub taking a dead specially lamprey, they love it, they are predators. BTW hope it WASNT a river.
  11. go for it anderoo, i too am thinking about targetting some tidal river carp,i have seen a small group of them all commons bar one mirror they were i would guess between 8 and 20 pounds,i rekon they will fight like demons in the flow, sounds like a challenge! the river lea through hackney and tottenham holds some absolutely massive carp(40+ caught),fishing these areas is not for the faint hearted tho so any from there i rate highly! gonna have a go at some drain carp in teh fens with soem mates too,one had two 20s in a overnight session last year. bring on the summer!
  12. singy, mate of mine went after carp on his fly rod he too reports its bloody good fun! he didnt get a 20 tho!
  13. was going for a night on the wierpool afetr zeds but changed plans, gonna go fri afternoon i hopee fishing on the lea for a few hours, definetly going saturday tho out on the Lea somewhere, cant wait, looking forward to casting into flowing water!
  14. yeah not a bad one aye! go get em pete, bigger hooks should see you right! yeah mine cat was a proper hunter i think,a long fish not a massive belly and a big ,mouth,my mate had anothera 21 in daylight on pellet, this fish had a smaller mouth and big pellet gut, **** pellets everywhere,a definet pellet head!
  15. sure are pete, nothing wrong with that mate,i am the same! if i get on a species i really got on it i look up as much info as possible mate, reason i like zander and cats,i dont know alot about them they are mysterious, i thought my cat ws an eel at first...then the rod hooped over, and the clutch despite being locked down sang a little! it didnt really run,i play fish quite hard, but when it wanted to go.... it went!....funny enough it made several attempts to get at some tree roots as to the right was clear it werent intrested in going that way! i used my pike rods wich are really 30 quid each glass fibre mix? rods,2.75 TC and 40lb braid mainline 15 mono on the closer in rod,i went all out to get one predator style tho lives n deads heres my pic save ya searching 20lb 5oz first cat!
  16. bp have you tried surface fishing or stalking them up close?
  17. you be suprised what you can find in the inner city waterways.
  18. nice one peter, recently got into cats my self very kool aint they i used 1/0 eagle waves mate bought on-line,get on em,you will land more like budgie said, teh bigger ones look awsome mate, your one has cracking patterns on it i like em like that not all washed out appreance. my pic is on a thread on here somewhere if you want to have a look. ps let us know how you get on! they dont half scrap some!
  19. probably be quite hard to present properly, when used for cats you have to use a dumbbel rig to stop them tangling everything and burying themselves. good idea tho! maybe a legered one on a small ish hook with a small drilled cork ball above it? the chub could be feeding on nymphs and shrimps tho!(can you hair rig em??!)
  20. hi dav i too am new to lures not to pike tho! i have had it before with baits mate, nornally letting them sink and giving them a twitch works, try it with a lure-a soft plastic for example,a good mate of mine i lure fish with is a lot better than me he was telling me he had a pit fish follow a large jerkbait in,didnt take so next cast it followe again, this time about 3ft from the bank he let the lure drop to the bottom and left it there, this fish circled teh lure for a good 5 minutes constantly try to lift or blow it off bottom it flicked it up and manged to take it in,mate hooked up and landed it about 8lb or so but just goes to show! your right about the reason for them being in the shade, too hot they were probably kooling off, phrahaps there is a nearby food source so they ave already fed? and are possibly digesting or just laying up.
  21. to confuse things further i have a prefrence for both! tho when i use teh sliding treble its mainly with livebaits of differing sizes, and i have teh bottom treble sliding not the top,the top acts as a block, teh trebel can only slide up freeley up to 5 -6 inches.
