  1. Maybe, with on exception, most of the regular AN contributors are very anti Angling Trust and anything loosely related to the organisation??
  2. I entirely agree. I have been trying to get rid of this attitude for over 30 years within my club and the North East in general. As a member of NAFAC I was invited to a meeting of several clubs last year to give a talk and information about joining. Everything was great and all seemed eager to join... until I produced the membership application forms. Anyone would have thought I'd thrust a crucifix in front of Dracula! The reason...the front cover carried a photograph of a large barbel. I'm almost there with my own club, sadly the North East (Northumbria) will take a little more time. Two - three generations perhaps. Another example was when as Secretary of the River Wear Fisheries Improvement, together with the Chairman, we were given the task of re writing the constitution. The main stumbling block was voting rights. Under a 1 vote per club system the game clubs argued that coarse angling would have as much if not more influence as game. Sadly democracy does not enter into equation with game anglers in this region Even today some game clubs do not allow their members to fish for coarse fish although many rivers now have some excellent coarse fish. Even grayling fishing is frowned upon within some clubs. There was an excellent article on the divisions that still exist up here in Northumbria the Oct/November issue of Waterlog. As far as I'm concerned an angler is an angler, there should be no distinctions. We are all being asked by the EA to share our waters with canoeists, it's just a shame we cant share with fellow anglers. Rant over!

  4. Tags : None I'm looking for any information on the coarse clubs/founding mmembers/coarse fishing from the early 60's in Co Durham and Northumberland. A friend who has recently retired is trying to write up the history of coarse fishing/clubs in Co Durham and Northumberland. He was at Newcastle University in the early 60's just when coarse fishing was getting a foothold in the region. Later he fished in the very early North York's - South Durham Winter League matches with the Carlisle lads if anyone was involved with those. (must have been keen to travel from the NW to fish the Swale/Tees) Probably a long-shot, but any information would be very much appreciated Thanks
  5. A couple of the NE PAC regions have leased a new water, but anyone wanting to fish will probably have to become a member of the PAC NE PAC Blog Select Region 21/89 Blog from the side menu. Wednesday, 19 September 2007 Fairburn Fishery opens to Select group of PAC members
  6. With the shortening days I find it better for short late afternoon/evening chubbing sessions. An hour or so before dusk and fishing two hours into dark on the local river is the ideal compromise, and your back home in time for the soaps
  7. I wonder whether they obtained a Section 30 before the water was stocked? They obviously didn't seek the advice of the EA The sad thing is that it's not a wind-up and worse, it's in Co Durham. We already have problems up here with some game anglers playing the high and mighty, what image does this give of coarse/carp fishing to the 'uneducated'
  8. Hi Karen, Another option would be the Waveney for chub (you might well guess) especially at Bungay Common. Loads of water to take the 11 of your party, plus more water close by. Have not found the info I promised on the Wensum yet, its in one of the GSG mags I loaned to a friend
  9. I used to do almost all of my summer-time fishing wading. I get quite frustrated these days not being able to get in the water. There are several different types of waders, and widely varying prices. A lot of my game fishing friends use the type with the seperate boots. I would go for the best you can afford, preferably chest. Nothing worse than finding you have a boot full of water, or the dangly bits getting wet when you go that little bit too far, or having to stand on your toe tips to avoid it. Cant do that either these days.
  10. Slept in my Mini Metro a couple of times (not recommended when 6'-2" and 19st+) Have more sense these days and get B&B. Also slept in the back of a Transit van for 3 nights with a few other bodies in the car park by the river at Bewdley, that was quite luxurious compared to the Metro. Problem was we were rudely awakened by the police at 3-00am I have a friend who retired last year and spends a good 75% of his time sleeping in his car now he's not working, even in the depths of winter. Strangely people no longer accept a lift from him now.

I'm about 23 stone and have used the JRC Classic for the last 4-5 years without any problems. I do believe they do a longer leg version which might be better. I have only ever used it on short (5-8 hours) river sessions though, not really a long stay angler.
  12. Not exactly angling but... A quote from the Chairman of the North East RFERAC "the committee (RFERAC) is neither set up to be democratic nor to be representative"
  13. Try HERE Chub anb barbel fishing on the Exe and Culm, or so a couple of friends tell me
  14. The guy got off by the way Phil A 'friend' who I have known for over 30 years (and taken all over the UK fishing) stood up in court and lied through his teeth. Just a pity the sensible thinking of your club doesn't apply to all. I recently asked Haughall College (who control the fishing on the Wear at Haughall) if we (the Chub Study Group) could use their water when the Group comes up to Durham in November; sorry, but we do not approve of coarse fishing was the reply. Fortunately other clubs were more helpful. Sad really when Haughall is trying to promote itself as a 'community college'
  15. They obviously did not visit the popular spots on the Wear, if they had they would have come accros just as many 'barbel fishing' Would have saved a fortune on fuel costs alone.
  16. I can visualise contracts being taken out as I type, Phil
  17. I would put that fish at not much more than 3lb "Andy had a terrific day with Carp to 3lb plus, skimmers to 2lb (just going bronze so will be mature next season), plus silvers, The icing on the cake for Andy was a beautiful 6lb 5oz male Tench. (so technically the lake is capable of holding a female of double this weight)" No wonder she is known as *ad Ann Add locally They were claiming 10lb tench last week ...and that over 1000lb of fish were removed from a water that was stocked with only 76lb less than two years ago Some pellets they're selling upt north, they must contain Newcastle Broon.
  18. Paul, If that is the case (removing coarse fish, and in particular grayling) give the EA a call at the Newcastle office.(Phil Rippon 0191 2034149) Under it's own guidelines the EA will not sanction the removal of coarse fish from any river or steam unless it can be proven that in doing so it will benefit the river SYSTEM as a whole, and not just one section; i.e. Lord Snitchy's bit on the north Tyne. If they are doing it during the coarse close season they should be prosecuted. As for grayling, the EA advises that all grayling are returned as per it's Trout and Grayling Strategy document. As for the two working together (game/coarse) I was at a meeting recently and gave out National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives (NAFAC) application forms. I was horrified at the reaction of some club officials when they saw the photograph of a BARBEL on the front cover. Anyone would have thought I was holding a crucifix and a necklace of garlic out to a vampire. I have lived in the North East for over 35 years, been Sec of the river Wear Fisheries Improvement Ass for a number of years, and I don't think I have seen any real change in attitude from the game anglers/clubs towards coarse fish, and coarse anglers, in that time. The strange thing about the Wear is that its not money orientated, most game anglers on the river are just normal working lads, it's more a mind-set thing which could take a centaury (or more) to correct. I suspect that money does come into the equation on the Tyne though. A centaury sounds daft, but I have been trying for almost four decades and I'm no further forward today than in 1972. (except the coarse stocks of the Wear are a lot healthier because they are no longer removed every year) Just to show how daft and stupid some clubs rules are, on most of the river Derwent (a Tyne tributary) anglers can't use a fixed spool 'spinning reel' That's why we see so many daft looking anglers fishing a float with nylon line on their fly reel/rod.
  19. Sorry my Lord, forgetting my place...again.
  20. Now why would anyone want to do that; offend the salmon anglers On second thoughts, they don't give a toss when they come wading through my swim when I'm after chub on the Wear. I had one guy tell me that they (the superior game anglers) try to discourage coarse anglers from fishing MY club waters. I did hear that the guy who has taken the BW stretch paid £200,000. He could have joined BWAC for about £40ish
  21. A friend had a 4lb-13oz fish @ 21.75" from the BWAC section of the Tyne a few years ago 55cm is approx 21.75" being generous.
  22. " tape some aquarium air line to the rod tip and push the little blighters in" I scrounged yards of the tubing from the hospital last year after I had my chemo sessions. They only bin it afterwards. I also managed to accumulate a life's supply of scissors, ideal for braid. Trouble is I always miss the liddl offers, I'll be away again this time.
  23. Cheap bread, I wait untill my local newsagent ( McAlls) sell the old bread of at 10p. Well I was born in Yorkshire When liquidised put in a freezer bag smeared inside with about 2-3ml of flavouring and freeze untill its needed.
